FreeCAD for Mac is a basic 3D CAD with advanced motion simulation capabilities. It is suitable for anyone interested in learning 3D CAD and motion simulation for free before using more sophisticated packages. Educators, students, and new engineers will find it ideal for the teaching and learning of geometry, kinematics, dynamics, vibrations, mechanisms, linkages, cams, machine design, and physics.

FreeCAD for macOS allows users to create and manipulate assemblies, which are collections of parts. The parts are simple 3D solids, which can be connected by joints, constraints, contacts, motors, actuators, springs, dampers, forces, torques, or gravity. Both open and closed 3D loops are permitted. FreeCAD for Mac performs full multibody dynamics analysis on the assembly to predict the motion according to Newton’s Laws. Animation using the simulated data produces realistic dynamic behavior of the system.

Freeware

Free to Play

This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game. In some cases, ads may be show to the users.

Demo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisements from the program’s interfaces. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited.

Trial

Trial software allows the user to evaluate the software for a limited amount of time. After that trial period (usually 15 to 90 days) the user can decide whether to buy the software or not. Even though, most trial software products are only time-limited some also have feature limitations.

Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose.

Notes for GNU/Linux users

Most distributions carry FreeCAD in their official repositories, however, if the distribution doesn’t follow a rolling release model the version they provide might be outdated. Instead you can download the AppImage above, mark it as executable and launch it without installation.

A portable version that doesn’t need installation can be achieved by starting FreeCAD with these commands: introduced in version 0.19

Simple installation

The FreeCAD installer is provided as a app package (.app) enclosed in a disk image file.

You can download the latest installer from the Download page. After downloading the file, just mount the disk image, then drag it to the Application folder or a folder of your choice.

That’s it.Just click on the app to launch FreeCAD. If you have this message «FreeCAD can’t be open as it is from unidentified developer. » Open the folder (Application) and right click on the app then click open and accept to open the application.

Uninstallation

There currently isn’t an uninstaller for FreeCAD installed with dmg package. To completely remove FreeCAD and all installed components, drag the following files and folders to the Trash:

If you installed FreeCAD with homebrew simply use the brew uninstall freecad command. That’s it.
