Fritzing

Fritzing is devoted to making creative use of electronics accessible to everyone.

The source code of Fritzing is available on our GitHub repository. Everyone is welcome to participate in the development.

We are asking you to pay 8€ (around US$10) for downloading the application. This way we can ensure future releases, bugfixes and features.

Version 0.9.9 was released on September 24, 2021.

Read the installation instructions below. If you have any problems with the installation, do not hesitate to contact us via the contact form.

Installing Fritzing

Windows

We tested Fritzing 0.9.7 on Windows 10 and the preview of Windows 11. To install Fritzing, run the downloaded installer file and follow the instructions. It may ask for admin rights («UAC») during the installation. Please confirm this request by clicking «yes». This will allow the installer to download additional libraries from Microsoft.

Fritzing is reported to work on Windows 8.1 and earlier. However, support for those versions has ended. If you already have Fritzing 0.9.6 running, the chances are good that 0.9.7 will run without additional steps.

We tested Fritzing 0.9.7 on Mac OS X High Sierra, Catalina and Big Sur (Intel and M1 with Rosetta). To install Fritzing on your Mac, open the downloaded *.dmg file and move Fritzing to your applications folder. You can then launch Fritzing from the applications folder. For macOS Sierra and El Capitan, Fritzing 0.9.3 is the latest version.

Linux

We created an AppImage that can be run on most Linux systems. We tested it on Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04, 21.04, and Fedora 34. It should run on any system with glibc >= 2.27 (about 2018 and later).

We recommend storing the AppImage in a Folder like $HOME/bin or $HOME/appimages. To run the AppImage, add the executable permission to the file and start it.

We created an AppImage based on Ubuntu 18.04. Fritzing is now able to run on any system with glibc 2.27 or later.

Read single FZP files

For parts developers, we added the ability to open an FZP file directly. Fritzing can then bundle the file into an FZPZ. This can ease the workflow for developers who use external editors to create parts.

Since the 0.9.6 release, we were able to close 249 issues in our fritzing-app repo. Specifically, the following fixes have been implemented:

  • Selection dropdowns are transparent #3848

The Fritzing parts library is now stored online at github and is automatically checked for updates. This means you will now get new parts (or fixes) in the moment when they are created. No need to wait for the next Fritzing release anymore!

Critical bug fix for messed up PCB traces

We have been plagued by an annoying bug that occasionally caused PCB traces to get loose and flip around. It has been tricky to track down but it’s finally fixed, sigh.. Plus, the fix will recover any files that have been mangled by this bug!

High-DPI display support

Fritzing now looks properly on High-DPI (aka Retina) displays on all platforms. It’s not really high-res but scaling well according to the higher screen resolution.

Easier handling of self-created parts

Custom / self-made parts and bins used to be stored in a hidden location on your hard drive, which made it really annoying to edit them with an external tool such as Illustrator or a text editor.
They are now conveniently located in your

/Documents/Fritzing folder for easy access!

Load/Save uncompressed fritzing files (.fz)

You can now alternatively save your fritzing sketches as an uncompressed set of files (.fz plus additional custom parts etc). This allows for proper versioning with systems like git or svn. Thanks to Sergio Oller (zeehio) for this contribution.

File icons

fzz, fzb, fzp, etc. now also have shiny file icons on Mac (thanks to scribblemaniac) and Ubuntu Linux (thanks to el-j — for the latter you have to run the install-fritzing.sh script)

Development version CD-548

Thanks a lot for your interest in helping the development of Fritzing!

This is a development version of Fritzing. Please create backups, use on a virtual machine, whatever you think secures your data. Do not use for production. That said, we trust our code enough to run it on our development machines.

To report problems

Please look if there is already an issue on github. Adding information to existing issues makes
them much more likely to be fixed.

Don’t expect individual support, the idea of the development version is to enable collaboration by using a common known build. We have >800 issues on the backlog. If you can provide useful information, this might help in raising the issue to the top of the backlog.

  • Why do we publish this?
    Detecting errors as early as possible usually makes them much easier to fix. Therefore we want to allow more people to try and work with the development version. We publish this development version because we hope to get error reports.

Development version CD-506

This is a development version of Fritzing. It is not even a beta. It was not tested for any platform. It may just crash.
It may turn your computer into a useless piece of metal. Create backups, use on a virtual machine, put it in quarantine, whatever you think secures your data. Do not use for production. That said, we trust our code enough to run it on our development machines.
