We know a lot of you were waiting for this one. We know we took our sweet time with it but the wait is finally over: Frostpunk is out now for macOS and is available on both the Mac App Store and Steam! This much-anticipated macOS version of the game is also available as Frostpunk: Complete Edition, which includes all three expansions.

Alongside its release on macOS, three expansions are available now as well. Two of the expansions broaden the lore and story of the Frostpunk universe and one adds new features to the game:

• The Last Autumn serves as a prequel story, set before New London’s rise told in the base game.
• On The Edge continues the story where the original Frostpunk ended.
• The Rifts adds a new endless mode map and a new constructible structure — The Bridge.

Ok, Citizens, this is serious. 👀

We didn’t believe that the rumors about some kind of curse related to the macOS release were true — but now we have to admit that something is definitely fishy here. Long story short: just after the release, we became aware that the game has a critical technical/balance issue that makes it impossible to play comfortably. We had to remove Frostpunk from Mac App Store and GOG due to that issue. But we’re already working on a fix (it’s quite late in Poland already) and the game should be back in the stores tomorrow (fingers crossed!).

A quick update: good news, the issue is resolved on Steam! We’ve managed to track it down and fix it over the night. We’re working closely with GOG and Apple teams to make the macOS version available on their storefronts as soon as possible, too. We’ll keep you posted — but we’re getting there!

Frostpunk on M1 Mac: Can it run on Apple Silicon?

Yes, Frostpunk runs on M1 Macs via Rosetta 2.

Frostpunk on Mac

Frostpunk sure took its time to launch on macOS. In fact, the game was in closed beta for months, but a few critical bugs prevented developer 11 bit studios from officially releasing.

We are glad, though, that all issues have been ironed out. Frostpunk now features absolutely everything the Windows version of the game does. System requirements are somewhat hefty but make no mistake, you will be playing Frostpunk on Mac in all its glory.

Is Frostpunk worth it? The reviews

All of 11 bit studios games have been well-received. Their previous game, This War of Mine was particularly liked by fans and critics. Frostpunk is a clear evolution from that, taking that same tense and gripping survival gameplay and bringing it to a full-blown survival game.

Note that according to these system requirements, a Mac with integrated graphics should not be able to run it. But we can confirm it’s possible if you have an M1. More on that below.

What is Rosetta 2? Rosetta 2 is a translation process that enables an M1 Mac with Apple silicon to use apps built for Intel-based Macs.

The game was tested on the following M1 Mac:

• 13-inch MacBook Air (2020): Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU, 8 GB RAM

As you can see below, the game is still exclusively written for Intel-based Macs, but thanks to Rosetta 2, Frostpunk can nonetheless run great on M1 Macs:

Frostpunk M1 Mac benchmarks

These are the Frostpunk M1 benchmarks we have gathered so far:

• 30-45 FPS : Playable : Acceptable for most (most gaming consoles do this).
• 45-60 FPS : Smooth : Fluid gameplay, with no perceivable stutters.
• 60+ FPS : Very Smooth: For hardcore and professional players, a luxury for most.

We usually aim for 30 FPS, because 30 FPS is enough to guarantee a smooth and fluid experience for most casual gamers.
