Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 — A Century of Flight
По счету девятая версия симуляции полетов Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 — A Century of Flight,
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 — A Century of Flight,
Running MS Flight Simulator 2004 on Windows 10 PC.
It seems well known that MS Flight Sim 2004 (FS2004) is incompatible with Windows 10 and after a Security Update it will not work with Windows 7 either.
I would still like to use FS2004 and it seems that the best way to achieve this is to use the original OS specified for it, ie, Vista or XP. I have a XP disk and Product Key and I wonder if it’s possible to install XP to a portable Hard Disk and run FS2004 from there on my Windows 10 PC. Alternatively may I consider a dual boot of Windows 10 with XP. Can anybody give me advice on the best/ simplest way of running FS2004 please ?.
Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. I understand the issue that you are facing currently, and we in Community will try to resolve your issue the best way we can.
I would suggest you to install the MS Flight Simulator in a compatibility mode and check if it helps. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.
Follow these steps to install the game in compatibility mode and check if that helps.
a. Download the game from the website.
b. Right-click on the setup file and click on ‘properties’.
c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 8/8.1 operating system from the drop down menu and proceed with the installation.
d. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.
Kindly let us know if you need any further assistance with Windows. We are glad to assist you.
Flight Simulator 2004 in Windows 10 Users Guide
A User’s Guide
Windows 10 And Older Software
Windows 10 was released by Microsoft in 2015, and was rapidly taken up by many computer users around the world, as it offered a free upgrade from Windows 7 through 8.1, and improved performance in all aspects of use.
Windows 10 is able to run on equipment able to run Windows XP at a minimum, and offers dramatic performance advantage, as it encompasses all the improvements and advances in Windows 7 since 2007, but without the metalogical ‘baggage’ which inhibited the previous developing operating systems in the past.
One of the important additions to Windows 10 is a much improved Compatibility Layer (also known as the Compatibility Mode in Microsoft parlance). This incorporates all versions of Windows since Windows 95, and individual Service Packs of Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Windows 8.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004
MS Flight Simulator 2004 remains a popular simulator among enthusiasts, as it permits older equipment to deliver an excellent flight experience, as well as an incredible library of add-on aircraft and scenery from web sites such as FlightSim.Com, Avsim, and many others. Developers of commercial (payware) add-ons are beginning to offer their FS2004 add-ons as free downloads, for instance the Virtavia software library of AlphaSim aircraft.
FS2004 represents an optimum for many users — it features a near-complete experience of stunningly good graphics, an ability to download and implement real world weather NOTAM’s provided by Jeppesen to this day, as well as simulated vocal Air Traffic Control, and Instrument Flight Rules and Flight Plan integration.
It runs extremely well on Windows XP, Vista and 7. But — can it run on Windows 10?
Installation
Windows 10 has the brains to notice that FS2004 is being installed, and automatically switches to Windows XP SP2 mode during the installation process.
If you choose to download and install the FS9.1 (the equivalent of an FS2004 SP1), Windows 10 picks up this too as a Win XP SP2 compatibility.
In all, this is a good thing, as the installation of the program is therefore easy to do.
The Perils Of Running FS2004 In Windows 10
Windows 10, like Windows Vista, 7 and 8 before it, is very careful about security on your PC. Flight Simulator, as it is going to be reading and writing files to the main disk drive, triggers a warning before use. Please click ‘Yes’ in the dialog box, and press on.
First start of FS2004 in Windows 10 looks good — in fact it looks like this:
The next view is a not very educational black screen!
Thanks! FSX Gold Edition/Deluxe is also a bitch to run in Windows 10. Spend quite some time getting to run but still crashes from time to time.
Many thanks for sharing with the community!
Hello Martin, very useful article ,also thanks !
I should be revising for a Computing exam next week, but my inner child and nostalgia are calling me to play FS2004!
Still love Rod Machado just for that one line ‘Pull back, on the stick.’
Really, I don’t know why some people have such problems to install FS9 with Windows 10. Recently I installed it twice the same way as for Win7, and got no issue.
Actually many things are missing. it’s not about minimizing or maximizing screens. it’s mostly about how the sim is run and how it is installed. specially compatibility modes and administrator rights. also the simulator is not mostly the main concern, what it’s more important is compatibility, installing and running addons like PMDG which is not providing support anymore for FS2004 users which is an insult after how expensive even their FS2004 addons still are. or those dumb*ucks at Wilco. FS2004 is still a major platform for training even for real pilots like me and it’s pathetic how developers throwed away the good old 2004 to the can.
THANK YOU. I recently bought a newer, key word being ‘newer’, reconditioned dell Optiplex 755 operating windows 7. I did this solely because it was time to say good-bye to Windows XP and I read many fare review about FS2004 operated well on this machine with windows 7. The computer came with a free upgrade to Windows 10 but I did not upgrade because of all the bad reviews. Now I have changed my mind, thanks!
I had no problems at all running FS2004 under Windows 10. I have 2 installations of FS2004 installed on my computer.
One is on the main computer and the other one is on an external hard drive. The main frame FS2004 takes a while to load and does not get the same fps as the one on the external drive. I use the external drive all the time and it runs beautifully.
Excuse the length of this comment in advance but clarity if forthcoming from any quarter, would be most welcome.
Being a simmer since FS98 and through 3 hardware iterations, my favorite by far remained FS2004. Some 5 months ago I took the plunge to ramp-up my hardware to an i6700 CPU with 16GB DDR4 RAM, a NVidia 980 GPU with 4GB DDR5 RAM all running on a 500GB SSD. All with the hope that Win10 with its inherent capacity to run old software in a compatibility mode, would give me a far better experience than through my previous WinXP SP3 OS.
I may say in passing, that I noted within this write-up the mention of Win10 in its compatibility mode running WinXP SP2.
Alas, in all these months I have not managed a single hour of flying.
I installed FS2004 with SP1 and the appropriate FSUIPC and it loaded without a hitch, except not displaying any aircraft in the preview pane while loading a flight. Any solution for the latter, welcome.
Loaded FSX- Steam Edition on a separate partition, runs well with unimaginable average FPS of 150. However, even after searching high and low for a solution, gives an error of SimConnect.dll not being found while installing the latest FSUPC 4. Again, any solution — welcome.
Next, on a fresh SSD and a fresh install of the same Win10, I installed FSX Delux with Acceleration and it runs well but with an average FPS of only 30 and the install of FSUIPC 4 was a breeze.
Now comes the bit that has foxed me till today. The install of FS2004 on a separate partition with SP1, displays the opening screen, still has a black screen in the preview window but after that the sim does not load for endless minutes (versus seconds on the earlier SSD drive) and when it finally does, I get the audio, no video — only a black screen and none of the keyboard commands work, even the one to exit the sim. The only recourse to exit the sim is with the restart button on the cabinet.
Just before I read this article, I was about to re-format this latter drive, install Win8.1 and see what happens.
Anyone offering any and all suggestions to get things working without any hiccups, welcome and I would be most grateful.
I just installed (a 3rd install) FS2004 in C:\, so it ended up in a C:\Flight Simulator 9 folder.
I dropped my UAC right down. (atually, it has always been down. I went to the fs9.exe, right clicked, & clicked ‘Run as Admin’. (Desktop shortcut as well)
Oh, I did the install, ran it. Installed the 9.1 update, ran it. Copied the ‘new’ (as it were!) fs9.exe, then ran it!
All works perfectly.
Press alt + enter and the preview will show. Once you’ve selected an aircraft, press alt + enter again. Otherwise the sim starts in a small window.
Thanks, I did as you suggested and sure enough on first pressing alt+enter the preview showed the aircraft. However, if I press alt+enter again, it goes to full screen but which is fully black, the Task Manager (on alt+ctrl+delete) shows nothing and one has to shut down.
The flight does get loaded if I load it after the 1st alt+enter but getting back to full screen, either from the top menu or by pressing alt+enter, results in a full black screen with no video but audio being there.
In short, I was exactly at the same stage as described in my post.
Then inspiration struck me to check and set the resolution within the sim to match the max possible on my monitor which is 1680x1050x32 and viola, everything came through hunky-dory.
Loaded SP1 and then FSUIPC and I think (fondly hope) that I am ready to start flying after a gap of almost a year.
Cannot thank you enough.
I have FS2004 up and running in Windows 10 now (thank you for the input and direction), but I wondered if anyone has solved the ATC and callsigns problem? Voicepack that works for FS2004 (the earlier versions) won’t function in Windows 10, and the version that will work in Windows 10 won’t work for FS2004. I’m stuck between two worlds! Any thoughts or advice? Flying without decent ATC callsigns makes the benefit of a more powerful machine running Windows 10 not worth the effort.
Great article!, I have installed FS2004 in windows 8 but have not tried it yet in windows 10, however I am looking forward to buy a new PC and since all new ones come with windows 10 already installed I really appreciate your information. Thanks a lot!
By the way, your screen wallpaper is nothing but gorgeous! :-), it would be nice to have the new Star Trek movies USS Enterprise available for FS2004 as it is already available for FSX
I run FS9 in windows 10 and it runs quite well. I use the 9.1 «No CD» crack.

Does it also mean that you do not go through the alt+enter steps (see my post above and the answer) while loading?
