Geany is a user-friendly Integrated Development Environment solution that aims to be fast and has been built to use only the GTK2 runtime libraries.
What’s more, Geany can work with numerous programming languages, such as C, HTML, JAVA, Python and more. A complete list of supported languages is available on the project’s page.
Well-organized IDE that comes with a tabbed user interface
Within the Geany main window, you get to see a list with all opened documents, but also the symbols included in the currently selected file. Note that Geany can open multiple files at the same time, and keeps them organized by using tabs.
At the same time, in the bottom area of the Geany main window you get to see the app’s status log, the compiler results, the messages tab, and the command line. Geany also integrates a Scribble area where you can type anything you like, such as short reminders or pieces of code.
Most project management tools are integrated in the Geany’s top toolbar: here you get to quickly create new files using various formats, to save or reload the current file, to close it altogether and so on. The same area enables you to both compile and build the current file.
Develop code in a clean and lightweight environment
Despite its minimalist design, Geany packs everything you need to write code, regardless of the programming language you are working in. Geany comes with syntax highlighting, can fold your code, integrates auto-completion features, can automatically close HTML and XML tags, and so on.
In addition, Geany includes a search tool that can help you find specific expressions within the code, but also allows you to quickly jump to a certain line of code.
Worth mentioning is that Geany comes with additional plug-ins that help you extend its capabilities. Make sure to navigate to the plug-in manager window to select the ones that you want to have active by default.

Geany for macOS
Geany for macOS is a project that contains all the necessary configuration files, themes, scripts and instructions to create the Geany app bundle and a dmg installer image for macOS.
The macOS binaries can be downloaded from the Geany Releases page:
In addition to standard Geany configuration, the macOS bundle creates its own configuration file under
/.config/geany/geany_mac.conf upon first start. In this configuration file it is for instance possible to override the used theme (light/dark) when autodetection based on system macOS theme is not desired.
Files and Directories
A brief description of the contents of the project directory:
- Launcher: A binary launcher which is used to set up environment variables to run Geany.
- WhiteSur-light-solid: WhiteSur GTK 3 Theme
- Papirus, Papirus-Dark: Papirus GTK 3 icon theme with lots of unneeded icons removed to save space.
- iconbuilder.iconset: source Geany icons for the bundle.
- modulesets-stable: copy of the modulesets-stable directory from the gtk-osx project containing dependency specifications. Since the upstram project is in a constant state of flux and fails to build frequently, this allows us to make a snapshot of a working configuration for our build.
- patches: various patches fixing dependencies to enable bundling.
- utils: various utility scripts.
- Info.plist: macOS application configuration file containing some basic information such as application name, version, etc. but also additional configuration including file types the application can open.
- geany.bundle: configuration file describing the contents of the app bundle.
- geany.entitlements: runtime hardening entitlements file.
- geany.modules: JHBuild modules file with Geany dependencies.
- settings.ini: default theme configuration file for GTK 3.
- bundle.sh: script creating the app bundle.
- create_dmg.sh: script calling create-dmg to create the dmg installer image.
- notarize.sh: script for notarizing the dmg using Apple notary service.
- sign.sh: script signing the app bundle.

The HOWTO below contains just the portions necessary/relevant for building and bundling Geany.

To create the bundle, you need to first install JHBuild and GTK as described below.
Create a new account for jhbuild (not necessary but this makes sure jhbuild does not interfere with some other command-line tools installed on your system).

With this settings, the build creates a 64-bit binary that works on macOS 10.13 and later. By default, jhbuild compiles without optimization flags. The setup_release() call enables optimizations.
Install GTK and all of its dependencies by running the following command inside the geany-osx directory:
The upstream project is sometimes in an unstable state and fails to build; if this happens, you can use our snapshot of modulesets which was used to build the last release of Geany:
(docutils fails when you do not set these variables).
To build Geany, plugins and all of their dependencies, run one of the following commands inside the geany-osx directory depending on whether to use Geany sources from the latest release tarball or current git master:

This section describes some maintenance-related activities which do not have to be performed during normal bundle/installer creation:
To get the Info.plist file associations in sync with filetype_extensions.conf , copy the filetype extension portion from filetype_extensions.conf to the marked place in utils/plist_filetypes.py and run the script. Copy the output of the script to the marked place in Info.plist .
Before the release, update the Geany version and copyright years inside Info.plist and create_dmg.sh . Also update the -release targets in geany.modules file to point to the new release. Dependencies inside geany.modules can also be updated to newer versions.
Copy modulesets-stable from gtk-osx into this project to get the latest dependencies (if it builds) and possibly modify it (if something isn’t working).

Geany — A fast and lightweight IDE
Geany is a small and lightweight integrated development environment. It was developed to provide a small and fast IDE, which has only a few dependencies from other packages. Another goal was to be as independent as possible from a special Desktop Environment like KDE or GNOME. So it is using only the GTK+ toolkit and therefore you need only the GTK+ runtime libraries to run Geany.

Installation from distribution packages
Using distribution packages on Linux, BSD and similar distributions is the easiest and recommended way. This way you will also benefit from automatic Geany updates by the package manager of the distribution.
Packages are available for most distributions including Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu and many more.
Installation on Mac OS and Windows
Prebuilt binary packages for Mac OS and Windows can be found on https://www.geany.org.
Installation from sources
For compiling Geany yourself, you will need the GTK3 libraries and header files. You will also need its dependency libraries and header files, such as Pango, Glib and ATK. All these files are available at https://www.gtk.org.
Furthermore you need, of course, a C compiler and the Make tool; a C++ compiler is also needed for the required Scintilla library included. The GNU versions of these tools are recommended.
To build the user manual you need rst2html from Docutils. A pre-built version of the manual is available in distribution tarballs and will be used as fallback if rst2html is missing. When building from Git however, that pre-built version is not included and rst2html is required by default. You can explicitly disable building the user manual using the —disable-html-docs configure flag, but this will result in not installing a local version of the user manual, and Geany will then try and open the online version instead when requested.
Building Geany from source on Mac OS and Windows is more complicated and is out of scope of this document. For more information on building instructions for these platforms, please check the wiki at https://wiki.geany.org/howtos/.
Installing from a Git clone
Install Autotools (automake, autoconf and libtool), intltool, and the GLib development files before running any of the following commands, as well as rst2html from Docutils (see above for details). Then, run ./autogen.sh and then follow the instructions for installing from a release tarball.
