How To Find IP Address Of a Domain Using Com­mand Line In Windows

In Windows, you can do plenty of things using command line. Converting a domain name to its IP address using the nslookup command is one of them. You can also find IP address of any website’s host machine.

Here’s is the step by step procedure:

1. Click on Start button and type cmd in the search box. Press “Enter”.

2. Windows command prompt will open. Now type nslookup ftp.yahoo.com and press enter.

3. It will show you Yahoo FTP IP address. This is IP address of the server where yahoo.com is hosted. Similarly you can find host machines for any other website.

4. If you want to look up IP address of a website then type nslookup in the command prompt and press enter.

5. Now enter the domain name of any website and press enter. It will show you the IP address of that particular site. For example I typed google.com and pressed enter. It returned Google’s IP address: 209.85.231.104.

It means if I type http://209.85.231.104 in a browser’s address bar, google.com will open.

Similarly you can convert any other domain name into its IP address. You can also check the result by typing the IP address in the browser address bar.

Now, for the more tech savvy folks among you, the nslookup command is used for testing out DNS servers. The above tutorial just outlines the basic usage of this command. There’s a lot more you could do with it. We will take it up in detail in a future post.

Remember, for websites that don’t have a dedicated IP address, you could get different results each time you use this command.

You can use nslookup on the IP. Reverse DNS is defined with the .in-addr.arpa domain.

yields 123.21.2.3 , and then you do:

this will ask 3.2.21.123.in-addr.arpa and yield the domain name (if there is one defined for reverse DNS).

You can use ping -a or nbtstat -A

They’re just trawling lists of web sites, and recording the resulting IP addresses in a database.

All you’re seeing is the reverse mapping of that list. It’s not guaranteed to be a full list (indeed more often than not it won’t be) because it’s impossible to learn every possible web site address.

How to Use CMD to Find an IP

Internet Protocol, or IP, addresses allow networked computers, servers and other hardware to find each other and communicate. In your business network, your network router’s IP address is called the «default gateway,» because it acts as a central hub through which all other hardware connects and assigns IP addresses for connected hardware. Using Command Prompt commands, you can locate the router’s default gateway and the IP address assigned to your computer. If you are not using a router, the resulting IP address will be the IP assigned by your Internet service provider. The Command Prompt tool also offers other means of finding IP addresses, including looking up the server IP address that hosts your business website or listing the IP addresses of every server between your current location and a website.

Click «Start,» type «cmd» and press «Enter» to open the Command Prompt window. Alternatively, click «Start | All Programs | Accessories | Command Prompt.»

Type «ipconfig» and press «Enter.» Look for «Default Gateway» under your network adapter for your router’s IP address. Look for «IPv4 Address» under the same adapter section to find your computer’s IP address. If you use a virtual private network for your business, its connection will have its own section and list your proxy IP address under «IPv4 Address.»

Note: Reverse DNS or looking up for a DomainName given an IPAddress may not always fetch the results you expect. The process of reverse resolving an IP address uses the Pointer DNS record type (PTR record). However in cases of a web farm, the hostnames are very generic. Sometimes the PTR record does not even exist. It is also possible that a stale DNS record for an IPv4 address belonging to a different host can be returned. Read more here

How to Get the IP Address of Your Domain

There are a few ways to find the IP address that has been assigned to your domain. This article will cover 4 methods that you can use to find this information quickly.

To utilize the steps outlined in this article you’ll need to ensure that your computer has access to the internet, and that you know the name of the domain that you’d like to lookup.

View the Server Information from within cPanel

If you have a cPanel account, just login and click on the server information link on the right side of the page as shown below:

The next page will show you your account’s Dedicated or Shared IP Address as well as some other useful informtion about your server such as the your Hosting Package, Server Name, cPanel Version, Apache Version, PHP Version, MySQL Version, Architecture, Operating System, Path to Sendmail, Path to Perl, Perl Version and Kernel Version

Ping the Domain

Typically you can find the IP address for a domain by pinging the domain. This can be done from your local PC, however the steps may vary depending on the OS that you’re using. To simplify this process we can use an online Ping tool, such as http://ping.eu/ping/ . Once you have opened the previous link please enter in the domain name that you’d like to check into the textbox and click Go. You should begin to see the output of the ping tool, which should include the IP address for the domain.

IntoDNS

Another great way to obtain a domains IP address is by using https://intodns.com/ . IntoDNS is a great site that will show you DNS related information for most domains. To find the IP address, simply enter the domain name in question into the textbox and click Report. Once the report has been generated, you can scroll to the bottom and find the WWW A Record column. The column to the right of the WWW A Record column should contain the IP address for the domain.

DNSWatch

Similar to IntoDNS, DNSWatch will allow you to obtain a domains IP by resolving its A record. You just need to enter in the domain into the Hostname or IP textbox and click Resolve. You should then be greeted with A record found: followed by the IP address of the domain.
