Github for Windows installing got error “Unable to retrieve application files, Files corrupt in deployment”
I am trying to install Github for Windows. At the point of downloading 30.6MB of data, I received the following error:

I’ve tried doing this several times, but the download is always 30.6MB data and it always shows this error. I am confused.

Unable to install GitHub for Windows
I’m trying to install github for windows when I received this error:
The error log produced this:
According to https://status.github.com/messages , there are no issues currently with the servers. I am on a personal computer so there shouldn’t be any issues with the connection. I tried downloading the application directly from http://github-windows.s3.amazonaws.com/GitHub.application , but the result was the same.
I am running Windows 8.1 Pro x64.
Edit 1: Currently I’m working around being unable to install GitHub for Windows by first installing it on another system, then taking the newly installed files from %appdata%\Local\Apps\2.0, and moving them to the system that is having trouble installing. (The full directory is %appdata%\Local\Apps\2.0\EWG9HYRR.BKG\2XKOJCRD.XRD\gith..tion_317444273a93ac29_0002.0002_f44dcb2e9d4cde94).
One of the major caveats of this workaround is that on the problem system, GitHub for Windows will report «This isn’t a networked deployed app.» and therefor not automatically update.

After contacting support, they emailed me and helped me work through the problem preventing GitHub for windows from installing.
This is a problem with the ClickOnce Application Cache.
- Before proceeding make sure that you have connectivity.
- Sometimes Firewall may be blocking this *.application
- So turn off you firewall for private and public profile and then retry.
- If the issue persists, you can use the process specified below.
- Hold down the Windows key and type R .
- Type in rundll32 %SystemRoot%\system32\dfshim.dll CleanOnlineAppCache in the run dialog and hit Enter .
Then try installing the application.
If that doesn’t work, there’s a more manual approach to ensuring the cache is cleared — you can delete the ClickOnce Application folder directly. On Windows Vista or higher, this will be the %LocalAppData%\Apps\2.0 directory. Simply delete the %LocalAppData%\Apps\2.0 directory and restart github for windows.

Bug Description
I was trying to install GitHub desktop(64 bit installer) on Windows 10 from the main website, but after download, I’m receiving «Installation failed» error every time I try to install it on system, even after running it as administrator.
I went though it’s setup log to try to resolve the issue on my end, and also went through the similar issues on this repo, but they all seem to be different, steps mentioned over those issues couldn’t help and I’m still getting the same error.
Version & OS
GitHub Desktop: GitHubDesktopSetup
Windows 10 (64bit)
Steps to reproduce the behavior
Dowload the Setup.exe file from main website and run it as administrator
Expected behavior
Installation should have started
Actual behavior

👋 @parulagg27 this error looks like an issue with the .NET Framework installation on your machine. Microsoft has a .NET Framework Repair Tool that has successfully resolved issues like this in the past. I would recommend running that and also opening an elevated command prompt to run sfc /scannow , which will check your system for any errors that need to be corrected.
Let me know how that goes.
parulagg27 commented Oct 11, 2019
Thank you for your suggestion, @steveward. I’ll try it out and will get back here shortly.

@parulagg27 As we have not heard back from you on this issue, we are closing it for now. Should you have any more details or questions, please reach out and we will be happy to help. Thank you.
GitHub for Windows installation
While installing GitHub for Windows, how do I resolve this error:
10 Answers 10
This is likely an Internet connection issue, either temporary (retry and see if the issue persists).
After trying again, The error was resolved automatically!
If the issue persists, this comments suggests:
then you can try opening github-windows.s3.amazonaws.com/GitHub.application directly in internet explorer and then it should work fine.
However, Internet Explorer is not recommended for that (depending on the version, as it might not support the deployment strategy ClickOnce (as opposed to the usual Windows Installer).
A recent Firefox or Chrome should allow a silent installation of GitHub for Windows.
You may use https instead of http and Internet Explorer. That is, open the URL below in Internet Explorer. It works for me.
I had a similar problem. I used Internet Explorer for downloading and it worked. Apparently this is the second time I have used Internet Explorer apart from downloading Chrome. Thanks Internet Explorer 😛
I was getting the same issue. It was due to proxy settings for me.
Running the above command did resolve this issue. I got the answer from Stack Overflow question How to fix this error while installing GitHub on Windows 7 64-bit.
Using a local proxy, my solution was to change the address from localhost to 127.0.0.1 .
For some reason, Internet Explorer (and this downloader) failed to resolve localhost , while Chrome worked fine.
This might help you. These are the steps I used to resolve it.
.Window + R or Start -> run. Then write (userprofile%\Local Settings\Apps) or (%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Apps).
If the OS is Windows XP use the first one or use the second if the OS is Windows Vista or Windows 7.
And finally delete the (2.0) folder.
Then run again. It works for me.
It happens most probably due to slow Internet or interruption in the connection. This download is done with basic down-loader i.e. it doesn’t have feature of pausing and fixing server disconnection like most of torrents have. This software is located on amazon servers and they do have limited no. of tries/attempts to download that software from one computer on particular day. When you try to run the program, it generates request from amazon servers for download. And if amazon servers doesn’t allow you to download if number of attempts are failed on particular machine. Solution for this problem is wait some period of time say few days and try same procedure with stable Internet connection and it will download without any error. Thanks for reading the answer, i had tried all those other options but none of them worked so i figured out this might be the best solution.
Main reason for the error is amazon server allocates only one download per system.so try after one day.and another thing is use the same internet provider for downloading.before downloading the app keep open the github account. This thing worked for me.
My installation problem to windows 10 was resolved after killing the Network firewall of my antivirus. This often gives troubles, restricting internet connection.

GitHub Desktop won’t open on Windows 10 #3757
Comments
CecileL commented Jan 10, 2018 •
Description
GitHub Desktop won’t open on Windows 10.
When double clicking on the shortcut nothing happens. GitHub Desktop don’t show in the Task Manager > Processes but shows in the Task Manager > Details
I tried opening as an administrator and with Windows 8 compatibility, same problem.
Version
GitHub Desktop version: As I cannot open it, I cannot see the version. I downloaded on the 4th of december 2017.
OS version: Microsoft Windows version 10.0.13299.192
Steps to Reproduce
- Install GitHub Desktop on Windows 10
- Open GitHub Desktop
- Close GitHub Desktop
- Reopen GitHub Desktop
Reproduces how often: Always at the moment, but just after installing I could open it and work. Then I closed it and could not open again. I tried rebooting several times but with no luck. I remember at some point it opened again but this week no way, nothing works.
- If you are on Windows, attach the most recent log file from:
%APPDATA%\GitHub Desktop\logs\*.desktop.production.log
I don’t have any logs folder in this path.
Additional Information
Thanks in advance for your help
Possible solutions to try
Workaround 1 via @kevlut
This may be helpful if you see it open in the toolbar like I was, it worked for me: vercel/hyper#1682
TL;DR with the github for desktop window «focused» hit Alt + spacebar to open the window context menu on screen and maximize the window. Not sure if this is related, but may be something with electron.
Workaround 2 via @cbw1243
This is my solution after trying many suggested above. Go to ‘C:\Users\YOUR USER NAMEn\AppData\Local\GitHubDesktop’, and then delete the most recent «app-«. I am not an engineer, but my logic is that the reason that you suddenly cannot open it is because you did something bad at the last time. If it does not work, you might try to delete others that you created most recently. Once I delete the «app-» folder, the GitHub Desktop can be opened.

If you go to Settings | Apps from the Start Menu and expand the entry for GitHub Desktop, you should see the version number:

I am running Windows 10 on multiple machines and have not come into this issue. Maybe there is a task that is preventing it from opening?
shiftkey commented Jan 11, 2018
@CecileL I’m not quite sure why Desktop would be silently failing, but a good place to start would be the Event Viewer. Could you open up a PowerShell prompt, run this command and attach the output? There might be a clue in here to assist with troublemaking:

@CecileL there’s no smoking gun in those logs. I’d suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version from desktop.github.com to see if that addresses the issue.
CecileL commented Jan 11, 2018
@shiftkey I already tried this several times in december and got no chance. Is the latest version newer from the one I use?
shiftkey commented Jan 11, 2018
@CecileL yes, 1.0.12 landed earlier this week and you can see the changes in the release notes.
CecileL commented Jan 11, 2018
@shiftkey Thanks for the info. I uninstalled my version, deleted all the files in Appdata/local/github then installed the latest version. It opened at the end of installation. Then I closed it and it won’t open again. I can’t reboot right now and it’s late here so I’ll see if it opens tomorrow after rebooting.
Thanks again for your help
PeterBetlem commented Jan 12, 2018
Same issue. It only opens once, and stays hidden after trying to restart it. :/
CecileL commented Jan 15, 2018
After installing 1.0.12 GitHub Desktop opened fine. Then I closed it and it would no reopen. After rebooting it opened again but once again, if I close GitHub Desktop it won’t open again
pliniociccio commented Jan 16, 2018
Same issue here.
mrhitnik commented Jan 19, 2018
My problem is exactly identical except I’m running Windows 7.
shiftkey commented Jan 19, 2018
Because of the lack of insights into this, I’m kind of stumped as to how to proceed. One theory that requires some additional tracing is that our use of Electron’s single-instance API is preventing the app from relaunching. This theory would also explain why a restart makes the problem go away.
- app launches, marks itself as the single instance
- because of some external factor, closing the app doesn’t clean up the process
- subsequent launches of the app are routed to the original process, but it doesn’t have any UI so it doesn’t launch properly
@CecileL @pliniociccio @mrhitnik are you able to see any leftover GitHubDesktop processes after you get into the «unable to launch» steps? This PowerShell command should help find these:
It will error if there are no processes found, but if a process is still around that would fit with this theory.
