Okay I found GLmatrix how do I install it?

Re: Matrix Screensaver for Ubuntu and how to install

And then just select it in your screensaver preferences.

If you are using Unity/Gnome3 you will have to jump through a few hoops to get it working though, see http://askubuntu.com/questions/64086. l-screensavers

Matrix Screensaver on Ubuntu Linux

Hello everyone is there anyway to install Matrix Screensaver on Ubuntu Linux?

Thanks so much for any help on this

Re: Matrix Screensaver on Ubuntu Linux

Do you mean a screensaver that simulates the ‘Digital Rain’ from the intro / credits sequences from the Matrix movie trilogy ? There’s two of those in xscreensaver, named xmatrix and glmatrix. The latter uses 3D graphics to give the effect depth and tilt it. They can be found in xscreensaver-data-extra and xscreensaver-gl. Obviously they need xscreensaver. How well xscreensaver integrates with your DE of choice I don’t know, but it was painless enough on XFCE that I don’t remember having to do anything special.

Screensaver Matrix won’t run.

Screensaver Matrix won’t run.

Post by eiger3970 » Mon Dec 30, 2013 2:37 am

Hi,
I can’t get my ‘Matrix’ screensaver to work.

Here are the steps I used to follow which made the screensaver ‘Matrix’ work.

Screensaver Matrix: Linux Mint > Menu > System > Package Manager > Password: p. > OK > Rebuilding search index: xscreensaver > (tick) xscreensaver, xscreensaver-data, xscreensaver-gl, xscreensaver-gl-extra > Apply > Apply > Close > Linux Mint > Menu > Applications > Preferences > Screensaver Properties > Mode: Only One Screen Saver: GLMatrix.

Now when I select Matrix and Preview to check, I see errors:
Xlib: extension «GLX» missing on display «:0.0».
glmatrix: root window’s visual 0x9c does not support the GLX extension.
xscreensaver: 16:37:00 0: child pid 21517 ( ) exited abnormally (code 0).

Not sure what the problem is, but didn’t see xscreensaver-data-extra listed as one of the packages you installed. Try adding that to your system and see if it solves the problem.

Also, assuming you are using Mate (as indicated in your signature), did you deactivate mate-screensaver and enable xscreensaver? If not, go to Menu -> Control Center -> Startup Applications -> Screensaver -> Edit and substitute xscreensaver in place of mate-screensaver in the «Command» box. Then close out, reboot and see if settings for xscreensaver now work with GLMatrix.

Matrix Screensaver Linux — The Matrix Falling Code Screensaver

Eye-candy in Linux

New users jumping into Linux these days see a lot of eye-candy in their favorite distributions. And with the large number of desktop environments, window managers, and themes available for them, no two customized Linux desktops will be exactly the same. All those who’ve watched the movie “The Matrix” or its sequels will have seen monitors showing the code of the matrix scrolling down. And while it doesn’t really make any sense, it looks incredibly cool as a screensaver.

Fortunately for us people, Jamie Zawinsky has created 2 incredibly beautiful screensavers which look exactly like the falling code in the movie. And depending on your computer’s graphics horsepower, you can use 2D version which is lighter on your computer, or the 3D version which incorporates all sorts of fancy effects. These screensavers have been created for the xscreensaver application which can be separately installed using your distribution’s package manager. These 2 screensavers are included with the xscreensaver application and can be chosen using xscreensaver’s options tool.

GLMatrix

This is the 3D version of the Matrix screensaver. It requires you to have an OpenGL accelerated desktop (Refer to one of my previous articles here.) Once you have an OpenGL supported desktop, just install xscreensaver using your distribution’s package manager and select GLMatrix from the huge list of screensavers available. You can watch a video of the GLMatrix screensaver in action here

XMatrix

If you’re using a low-performance computer/laptop or a netbook with an onboard graphics card and cannot run heavy 3D stuff without slowing down your system to a crawl, this 2D version of the Matrix screensaver is for you. This version has a 2D interface with the falling code, minus any special effects. Here is a video of the screensaver in action.

Conclusion

While these are the only two Matrix screensaver Linux OS tweaks, as opposed to the many more for Windows, they’re very realistic and can make your computer look uber-cool when bundled with a similarly themed desktop environment and other applications like media players and web browsers like Firefox. And knowing the nature of open-source programmers, you can be sure that more screensavers inspired by the Matrix falling code will be released.
