This is less invasive than gnome-terminal-fedora, because it doesn’t include the notification-feature. Therefore you can stay with the regular vte3 and vte-common! To fullfill the makedepends you probably need to install the packages itstool, docbook-xsl, appstream-glib and yelp-tools, they can be removed when makepkg was executed successfully. Please ensure that you have installed the package group base-devel, which is a requirement to use AUR.

Top Workaround with devilspie, fore- and background are transparent.

Bottom Background transparency with gnome-terminal, better readability.

@Users of Manjaro

Manjaro usually needs some time to follow Archlinux after major upgrades of GNOME. Please check if Manjaro is providing the same version of GNOME, especially the dependencies vte3 and vte-common. If you want the package for an older release, you can pick the required files from the Git log.

@lordcriswat: The package includes the patches and the PKGBUILD uses the officiall sources from «download.gnome.org». No mirror servers are used by the PKGBUILD itself! Probably your PACMAN has already trouble with fullfilling the dependencies from officiall mirrors of Archlinux, if so ‘/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist» is your place to go. Sometimes downloaded tarballs are damaged, in this case you can try to remove it from ‘/var/cache/pacman/pkg’.

Hi! I’m trying to build this package but http://mirror.nbtelecom.com.br is down, or at least i get a time out error.

How can i make it so if a mirror is down makepkg tries again in a different one instead o cancelling the whole thing?

EDIT: I manually downloaded the tar, checked sha256sum, extracted it to ./src and deleted the source link and sha256sum from PKGBUILD. However, for future reference, isn’t it there a way to go to the next mirror automatically?

I can just guess, but it clearly states that the downloaded sources for gnome-terminal are not valid. Probably they are really ditched? So I would delete ‘gnome-terminal-3.26.2.tar.xz’ (our just delete everything there) and start over again.

Please install the package group ‘base-devel’. It is an implicit requirement for using AUR and includes GCC, PATCH and so on.

I’m running Manjaro, not arch, but I received the same error message. I got around the outdated vte3 problem by installing the vte3-git package instead.

After installing vte3-git, the gnome-terminal-transparency update installed without problem.

I’m looking forward, that this will solve your problem. Probably the internals from gnome-terminal need 3.24 and use some internal number like ‘vte-2.91’ for the API-Version.

@Cryen The new update to 3.40.2 fixes the error and I updated the PKGBUILD to make sure it grabs the correct version of the file from now on.

Hi everybody, I’m trying to install it in a fresh Manjaro 20 installation. However, while building, I’m getting the following error:

warning: libicuuc.so.67, needed by. libvte-2.91.so

If I try to install icu it gives me an error too:

I just uninstalled manjaro-settings-manager and other packages, and finally I could upgrade icu to 67. However, now I’m getting this:

xmllint error while loading shared libraries: cannot find libicuuc.65.so

Finally, I installed libxml2 and it’s done right now 😀

Терминал Arch Linux не запускается

У меня была такая же проблема после новой установки арки. Я проверил, дважды проверил и трижды проверил locale.gen и даже удалил все локали, кроме en_US.UTF-8. Я как раз собирался сдаться, когда я проверил в настройках «Регионы и язык» и обнаружил, что язык не установлен, хотя я выполнил команду для его установки. После выбора английского и перезагрузки все работает нормально.

Похоже, вы испортили /etc/locale.gen файл.

Если вы англичанин / американец, закомментируйте любые другие записи в этом файле, ЕСЛИ ВАМ НЕ НУЖНО. Они для других языков. Если вы американец, то вам больше всего нужно en_US.UTF8 .

Отредактируйте /etc/locale.gen файл и раскомментируйте en_US.UTF8 .

Закомментируйте любые другие, если, конечно, вам не нужно, чтобы они могли читать.

Затем запустите: sudo locale-gen

гном-терминал должен запуститься потом. Если нет, установите xterm и запустите с него gnome-терминал, чтобы увидеть, что происходит:

Попробуйте Ctrl alt F2 или выйдите из X.

Затем нажмите, Ctrl alt F1 чтобы вернуться к X.

Делаем так, чтобы терминал летал (часть 1)

Одним утром, работая в терминале, я задумался о том, что мой эмулятор терминала недостаточно быстрый и удобный, поэтому решил искать альтернативу старику gnome-terminal. Облазив половину интернета, а также репозитории с dotfile’ами, я нашёл достойную замену, и готов рассказать и показать как перейти с надоедливого gnome-terminal (который к тому же и медленный) на более новые эмуляторы терминала.

C чего стоит начать?

Первое, что я усвоил за 3 года работы на Linux — не пытайтесь написать все конфиги сами. Рук не хватит. В наше время каждая программа имеет свой собственный формат конфигурации будь-то .json, .cson, .vimrc, и так далее. Написать всё под себя, не пытаясь ничего перенять у других — пытка для вашего ума. Инструменты созданы (в основном) для того чтобы на них работать, а не всю жизнь их настраивать.

А что не так с Gnome-terminal?

Лично мне не нравится в нём многое: внешний вид, скорость, функциональность, время подгрузки оболочки. Мне терминал нужен для того, чтобы редактировать мелкие скрипты, иногда с мультиплексором. Я часто открываю и закрываю терминал, поэтому он должен прогружаться быстро. Также я использую Vim, как основной редактор, так что он должен быть полностью совместим с новым эмулятором терминала.

Скорость

Давайте посмотрим сколько времени требуется каждой консоли для выведения всех символов от 1 до 1,000,000 (шрифты везде одинаковые, так что погрешность времени прогрузки шрифта ± одинакова.

Функциональность и использование памяти

В Gnome-terminal банально нет копирования при выделении мышью, при создании нового экземпляра этот монстр жрёт плюс 20 мегабайт памяти только на создание нового окна.
При включении zsh при старте, эмулятор gnome’a долго его грузил, что для меня уже недопустимо.

Решение проблемы

Облазив некоторые ресурсы (ссылки на которые будут приведены в конце), я понял что gnome-terminal никуда не годится. Мне нужен продуктивный эмулятор терминала, который можно настроить так, чтобы он буквально понимал меня с полуслова. Также терминал должен быстро прогружать связку tmux+zsh.

Hyper

Hyper — эмулятор терминала, который построен на веб-технологиях. Его можно видоизменять с помощью стилей CSS. Он расширяемый и быстрый.

Alacritty

Alacritty — эмулятор терминала, который считается самым быстрым (по заявлению разработчика). Его работа ускоряется за счёт видео карты, он умеет выдерживать большие нагрузки (как видно, он даже с включенным tmux + zsh справился быстрее, нежели gnome + zsh)

Конфигурация

Конфигурацию я выложил на Github по ходу того, как писал (и пишу) её, а также переводил, если брал у кого-то кусочки или брал примеры из документации. По своему усмотрению вы сами можете твикать всё как захотите. Не стесняйтесь делать pull-запросы, если у вас есть предложения. Моя цель — собрать удобную конфигурацию, которая бы смогла удовлетворить почти всех, а также с помощью одного скрипта, программист мог спокойно взять и начать работать, а не находится в поисках «где там я свою конфигурацию потерял».

Также в репозитории приложены два файла fastconfig.sh и fastconfig_arch.sh. 1-й для Debian/Ubuntu, второй для Arch/Manjaro.

Пишем свою конфигурацию

Я начну с Alacritty.

В следующей части проделаем то же самое с XTerm и Hyper. А также настроим Tmux и Vim.
