Install Google Keep in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty

Google Keep is a free note taking service from Google. It’s available on Google Play for the Android mobile operating system and on Google Drive as a web application.

This tutorial will show you how to install Google Keep, based on Chrome browser, in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr.

1. Download the Google Chrome web browser at: chrome.google.com

You may check out your OS type (32 or 64 bit) via System Settings -> Details -> Overveiw.

2. Install the package via Ubuntu Software Center, or by running the below command in terminal (press Ctrl+Alt+T to open terminal):

3. Open Chrome browser and go to Google Keep for Chrome page.

Click on the blue button which says “Free” and then select add to Chrome.

4. Once you installed this app, type in chrome://apps/ in address bar to go to the Chrome Apps page.

There you’ll see a list of app shortcuts including Google Keep. Right-click on the icon and select “Create Shortcuts…”

5. Select creating shortcut icon on Desktop or Application Menu in next window:

Now open Google Keep from menu or desktop and enjoy!

How To Install Google Keep In Ubuntu 13.10 [Quick Tip]

Lately, Google Keep has been my favorite quick note taking app in Android. While working on Ubuntu, I often tend to take some quick note as well. Since Google Keep syncs between devices, it makes sense to install Google Keep in Ubuntu as well. In this quick tip, I am going to show you how to install Google Keep in Ubuntu 13.10 or other Linux distributions.

If you are a Google Chrome user, you might be aware of Google ‘desktop apps’. There are a bunch of apps in Chrome Web Store that can be found in “For your desktop” collection. Unlike regular Chrome apps that run inside the browser, these ‘desktop apps’ run standalone, like a desktop app. We’ll see how can we leverage this new feature to install chrome apps as native Ubuntu apps.

Install Google Keep in Ubuntu 13.10:

Though I am taking an example of Google Keep here, you can use the same procedure to install other apps such as Any.Do or Pocket (from For your desktop collection). Quite obviously you must have Google Chrome web browser installed in your system. It may or may not work with Chromium browser.

Step 1:

Open a new tab in Google Chrome. Go to Chrome Web Store and install Google Keep.

Step 2:

Now from the new tab, right click on the Google Keep icon and select Create shortcuts.

Step 3:

Check both Desktop and Application menu.

That actually is it. Quite easy in fact. You can now find Google Keep in Unity Dash and lock it to launcher. Even if you are not running Chrome, you can simply run Google Keep as a normal Ubuntu app.

Cool, isn’t it? Google is planning to port Google App Launcher to Linux as well. And soon we will also have Google Now desktop app for Linux which is currently available only in dev channel.

Thinking about all these, I wonder why Google has not worked on a native Google Drive client for Linux. Of course there are third party apps such as Insync to sync Google Drive like Dropbox in Ubuntu but an official Google Drive would be much appreciated.

Desktop приложение для ведения заметок (Google keep)

Для Android в Play Market есть приложение, а вот для ПК полноценных приложений нет, но есть Chrome-app, которое нам вполне подойдет. Стоит отметить, что такой метод запуска Chrome-приложений с интеграцией в окружение рабочего стола я впервые увидел и был несколько удивлен таким подходом.

Собственно рассмотрим установку Google chrome приложений:

1. Скачиваем и устанавливаем Google chrome с официального сайта https://www.google.com/intl/en-US/chrome/browser/

2. Устанавливаем пакет при помощи центра приложений Ubuntu (или из консоли как вам удобнее).

4. Нажмите кнопку установить

5. После установки приложения откроется страница приложений Google chrome или на эту страницу можно перейти введя в адресной строке путь chrome://apps/

6. Нажмите на приложении правой кнопкой мыши и выберите пункт «создать ярлык»

7. На рабочем столе появится значок приложения, которое можно запустить. После запуска необходимо авторизоваться в Google-аккаунте и можно начать пользоваться.

Установка Chrome-приложений в Windows особо не отличается и я подготовил небольшое видео по установке.
