Does this work with all HDD’s?

I replaced my Hard Drive in my iMac and I now have a loud noise like a fan, will HDD Fan Control Help

This is exactly what HDD Fan Control was created for, that noise is the HDD Fan turning at 6000rpm, it does this as it cannot determine your HDD Temperature. HDD Fan Control will read the drive’s temperature and set the fan to an appropriate speed, and the noise will stop.

I have replaced my Hard Drive and after some time the Fan gets louder, but resetting fixes it for a while, do I need HDD Fan Control?

Yes, this is typical of the temperature sensor issue.

What temperature settings should I use?

The default settings are OK for most drives, but we would suggest checking your drive temperature range and setting the temperatures so that the fan would be spinning at 6000rpm before the drives max operating temperature.

Does this work with all SSD’s even those that do not provide temperature data over S.M.A.R.T?

Yes it does, HDD Fan Control will use the iMac’s calculated internal temperature to keep your drive cool and the fan quiet.

Does this fix the hardware test failure?

Unfortunately no it does not. The iMac still cannot read temperature signals from its temperature sensor so will still report this during the test.

Does HDD Fan Control work on a MacBook/Mac Mini

Unfortunately HDD Fan Control is only designed for the iMac, and it will not control the fans correctly on a MacBook or Mac Mini. We are investigating making it compatible with all Macs but because most other Macs only have fans to cool the entire system the control algorithm would have to take into account all sensors etc, and would effectively be taking over the cooling of the entire Mac.

Is the Windows version ready yet?

We are still hard at work developing the Windows version, and will be releasing a Beta version when we are confident it is working well enough to release for Beta. We do not currently have a time frame for this.

I purchased HDD Fan Control before version 2.0 and do not have a license, can I get one?

Since version 2.0 ofВ HDD Fan Control we have required licensing. If you purchased before this, simply use the Contact Us form including as many details as possible about your order and we will create a license for you.

Can I remove HDD Fan Control from the Status Bar / Menu Bar?

HDD Fan Control is a system process that starts when Mac OS X loads and runs till shutdown. What you see in the status bar is a separate application called HDD Fan Control Monitor. It is only used to display current temperature and fan speed to the user and check for updates, this is not needed for HDD Fan Control to continue to work. To remove HDD Fan Control Monitor from the status bar and prevent it from re-launching when you next login simply click on the Temperature / Fan speed in the status bar, make sure «Launch at Login» is not checked then click Quit.В

How do I uninstall HDD Fan Control?

You can download and run theВ uninstall script, you will be required to enter your administrator password.

After deleting these files, or running the uninstall script you will want to power down your iMac completely and restart it to remove any remaining HDD Fan Control settings.

Or to manually uninstallВ follow these instructions:

Run this command in Terminal to stop HDD Fan Control, You will be prompted for the Administrator’s password.
sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.surteesstudios.hddfancontroldaemon.plist

Remove the following files and folders (both on your start disk):

  • /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.surteesstudios.hddfancontroldaemon.plist
  • /Library/Library/Application Support/HDD Fan Control/
  • /Library/PreferencePanes/HDD Fan Control.prefPane
  • /Applications/HDD Fan Control Monitor.app

You will be prompted for the Administrator’s password when deleting these items.

After deleting these files, or running the uninstall script you will want to power down your iMac completely and restart it to remove any remaining HDD Fan Control settings.

Installing HDD Fan Control

Download

You should download HDD Fan Control from this site, see the download link in the top menu bar. You will find “HDD Fan Control.dmg” in the location you downloaded to, normally your Downloads Folder.

Mounting DMG

HDD Fan Control comes in a Disk Image which you must double click to mount if it has not automatically done so.

Installing HDD Fan Control

HDD Fan Control is a complicated program which runs as a system process to properly control the Fan, hence it must be installed to work. To do this double click on the installer from the mounted disk image. Follow all instructions providing your administrator password when requested.

Once installed

Once installation has completed HDD Fan Control will be running on your system. If you are running the Demo, you have 1 hour from now to check it does what you need. As HDD Fan Control is a system process it does not have any normal User Interface as such, it has the HDD Fan Control System Preferences Pane to access its Settings, and HDD Fan Control Monitor which communicates with HDD Fan Control and displays Temperature and Fan Speed information in the Status Bar. HDD Fan Control Monitor will also have started and should be visible in the Status Bar.

HDD Fan Control Monitor

HDD Fan Control Monitor is also responsible for checking for updates and licensing. HDD Fan Control Monitor can be made to Launch at Login from its menu. HDD Fan Control

Reduce Fan Noise and Protect your Drive.

  • Fixes iMac Fan Noise problem
  • Stops the fan always running at full speed
  • Allows HDD Fan to run at a speed related to Drive’s temperature
  • Does not need the Apple Temperature Sensor or Firmware
  • No hardware modifications needed
  • Protects Drive from Overheating
  • Works with all HDD’s & SSD’s

Have you replaced your iMac’s Hard Drive with a new HDD or a SSD and the fan has started running at full speed creating a lot of noise?
HDD Fan Control controls the fan speed in relation to the drive’s temperature, slows the fan down preventing the loud noise and keeps your drive safe from overheating.

iMac HDD Fan Control does not require Apple’s temperature sensor or cable to obtain the drives temperature as it uses the S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) protocol built into all drives, this means you no longer need the temperature sensor or cable for the fan to operate correctly.

HDD Fan Control

Version: 2.5
Requirements: iMac, OS X 10.6+

1 Hour Demo or Full Version with License
End User License Agreement

Fixes iMac Fan Noise Issue

Replacement Hard Drives or SSD’s in an iMac cause the HDD Fan to run at full speed.
Unlike other Fan Control Software, HDD Fan Control completely controls the fan speed making it run correctly again.

Protects Drive from Overheating

Controls the fan speed to provide the correct cooling for your drive, preventing overheating and early failure whilst also keeping the fan quiet when cooling is not needed.

No Temperature Sensor Needed

HDD Fan Control does not use Apple’s Internal Temperature Sensor, instead it uses the S.M.A.R.T interface built into every HDD and SSD to obtain the drives internal temperature.

Features

Controls the Hard Drive Fan Speed Directly

Unlike other Fan Control Software which can only increase the fan speed. HDD Fan Control directly controls the speed of the HDD Fan slowing it down when the drive is cool, and speeding it up to protect the drive from overheating when hot.

Sets fan speed for Hard Drive Temperature

Runs the fan at a speed appropriate for the HDD or SSD’s actual temperature.
Provides the correct cooling for your drive, preventing overheating and early failure whilst also keeping the fan quiet when cooling is not needed.

Obtains Temperature using S.M.A.R.T

HDD Fan Control uses the S.M.A.R.T protocol built into every Hard Disk Drive and SSD to obtain the drives internal temperature without the need for Apple’s Temperature Sensor or HDD Firmware. This allows you to use any HDD or SSD in your iMac

Runs at Startup

Runs as a system process at startup, working even before or if a user has not logged in, and continuing to work until the iMac is shut down; totally independent of user login.

Works with any HDD or SSD

HDD Fan Control allows you to install any HDD or SSD into your iMac, or install additional drives, and not have the loud noise from the iMac caused by the HDD Fan. Have confidence in knowing that the cooling has been setup for the new drive’s specifications.

Can work without S.M.A.R.T

Some SSD manufacturers have not implemented correct temperature readings over S.M.A.R.T for their SSD’s. HDD Fan Control will still work with these SSD’s by calculating the approximate temperature of the drive from the other internal sensors.
It can also be setup to not use S.M.A.R.T for any drive if this is preferred.

Used by Apple Repair Centers and Technicians

HDD Fan Control is used by Apple repair technicians all over the world and has proved itself as a great solution to the fan problem.

Custom Temperature to Fan Speed curve

Ability to define a custom relationship between Drive Temperature and Fan Speed for your drive’s specific cooling needs and your fan noise preferences.

Free Automatic Updates

We are constantly improving and testing the temperature control algorithm with new Hard Disks and SSD’s to make sure we provide the best fan control possible, as such you get free Automatic updates of HDD Fan Control.

Status Bar Monitor

HDD Fan Control comes with a small Application called HDD Fan Control Monitor. This lives in the Status Bar and displays the drive’s current Temperature and the Fan Speed.

Allows you to adjust the fans cooling curve for your particular drive, and how quiet you wish the fan to be, or how cool you want your drive.

Also allows you to select which drive to take S.M.A.R.T temperature readings from if you have installed additional drives into your iMac or boot from a separate drive.

HDD Fan Control can calculate the iMacs internal temperature around the HDD and use this instead of S.M.A.R.T

Can run constantly at the minimum set speed if you wish to keep the fan quiet at all times.

I just wanted to drop you a quick line to say thanks for providing this excellent software at a very reasonable price…
Unfortunately, I’ve found it about 3 weeks too late — just replaced my HDD and had to buy a new sensor cable, as I accidentally removed some of the insulation on the wire…
This app would have been a much quicker, and cheaper, fix than ordering a whole new cable and dealing with 6500RPM for 2 weeks =) – Mat, Canada

We used this software to control the fan. By default, HDD Fan Control sets the speed of the fan to 1000 rpm, which is much quieter than the 6000 rpm that the fan spins at without the utility.
To get the iMac working so I could observe the fan, I used HandBrake to convert a DVD file that was ripped to the hard drive. HDD Fan Control sped up the fan to keep the temperature down. – MacWorld

Great Application!
I was using smcFanControl with apple scripts to set the fan speed.
That application worked at startup, but I had to make scripts to override after wake from sleep. I was not savvy enough to write a script to do that as well, so it was a manual task.
The main problem with that setup was my Mac would wake from sleep on its own when I was not around, and I would return to a full fan speed Mac. not that happy.
Your application solved this problem and is well worth the money! – Gavin, Massachusetts

Again I can’t tell you how much appreciate all your work. – Daniel, Missouri
