What type of game is Heroes & Generals?
Heroes & Generals is a free-to-play MMOFPS where Germany, United States and Soviet Union fight for victory in one grand online war. You fight and make friends as a team, and no matter if you play as Infantry, Tank crew, Fighter pilot, Paratrooper, Recon or General, you make a difference in the war.
Can you tell more about the FPS (First Person Shooter) part of the game?
Players play as ‘Heroes’ fighting on the frontline, flying planes, parachuting-, and commanding vehicles ranging from ordinary bicycles to heavily armored tanks. The Action Game is in all its aspects a full blown First Person Shooter, complete with intense infantry, vehicle and airplane combat in a wide variety of modes and missions. As your customizable soldier advances in rank, you might join a small squad of elite soldiers operating behind enemy lines, or fall-in with a larger section fighting an epic battle for a strategic bridgehead. We try to create an Arcade Shooter with realistic elements, such as weapons ballistics, advanced vehicle armor models, etc. What makes our game different to most other Shooters is that every single mission fought in the Action Game, is part of one grand, persistent online war. In the end, the ‘Heroes’ will be the deciding factor on who will win the war. The ‘Heroes’ will look to their ‘Generals’, to send them the needed reinforcement and supplies that they need, to win those strategic important battles!
Can you tell more about the Strategic Multiplayer Campaign?
The ‘War’, as we call it, is the strategic part of Heroes & Generals. In the Campaign ‘Generals’ control a number of Assault Teams (army units), fighting for either the US, Soviet or the German faction, and move them around the campaign map in order to conquer cities, airfields, factories and other important strategic points. When two or more hostile Assault Teams attack each other, a mission is created, and players from each side can join and play out that mission. The Assault Teams carries an amount of resources, which will be the ones available in the Action game, and all kills in the Action-game will be reflected in the Campaign. The ‘Generals’ can also add reinforcements to an ongoing battle, so your troops on the battlefield will get more resources.
What kind of resources are carried by an Assault Team?
The resources are by definition the number of ‘lives’ you have in an Action game.
For instance, if a German Infantry Assault Team (90men) engages a fight with an American Infantry Assault Team (90men) there will be 2 ways to conclude the Action Game.
1: Win by completing the maps objective i.e. defending if you is the one being attacked and vice versa.
2: Eliminate the enemy by killing all their troops. This means, that if e.g. the Americans kills 90 German soldiers, the German won’t have any soldiers to reinforce the Action Map with and the remaining Americans will be able to complete the Action Game’s objective without any enemies to fight. Also if you try to picture the above scenario, there could be instances of the Germans realizing they are being outgunned by the Americans, and would contact a General and ask for reinforcements. Here it will depend on the speed of the Generals to send the reinforcement, and how long the supply line is, if the reinforcement will make it in time before the Germans were eliminated. If the German reinforcements do arrive in time, the picture could be completely turned as now the Germans could have 30 tanks and 60 more infantry, if the General had sent 2x Amour Assault Teams as reinforcements. In theory, one Action Game could last for hours, if the flow of reinforcements is steady on both sides and there is a stand-off on completing the Action Game’s objectives. This also makes the overall war a battle of attrition and this is also why there is no auto-balancing in the Action Game, since e.g. 5 vs. 10 actual players sitting by their computers could still win if they work well together.
What faction can I play?
At the moment you can choose to join the US, Soviet or the German faction.
Once I have chosen to play either Germans, Soviet or US, will I then be able to switch sides?
You only need to choose side if you want to play the advanced war battles or when you start deploying assault teams. When you do so you will only be able to access your assault teams on the chosen faction for the remainder of this war and you will only be able to play war battles on the chosen faction with your soldiers.
How long will a “war” take?
It is difficult to say, since there will be so many factors to take into consideration. Usually a war takes around 1-4 weeks (in real life), but it is primarily decided by the generals’ tactics, and the soldiers who fight the actual battles, how long the campaign will take. One war day as shown on the General tab goes 4.7x faster as a normal day.
Will there be more factions?
We will add more factions in time, and now you may join the US, Soviet and the German faction.
Will there be other theaters of war, e.g. Africa, Pacific?
We aim to add theaters of war over time. Heroes & Generals is updated regularly with new features, technology and content.
Is Heroes & Generals only for “Hardcore” gamers?
Absolutely not! Heroes & Generals provides you with several options on how to play the game. You can for instance just log-in and play an action mission or two, or spend your whole Sunday in front of your computer commanding your troops, and be the ‘General’ to decide the outcome of the war. The choice is yours!
Are there both Singleplayer and Multiplayer versions of Heroes & Generals?
Heroes & Generals is a multiplayer only game.
Can I play this game offline?
No, Heroes & Generals is solely developed as an online game.
Will it be possible to make Clans/Guilds?
In due time, it will. The Campaign with it’s Assault Teams will have added Clan-features at some point. We have an IRC based chat system, so you can make private chat channels, that you can password protect if you so desire, to gather all of your friends. It’s also possible to open a large message group with your friends. We also have a friends system in place and mutual friends can queue for each others missions.
Will I be able to see stats?
Yes! In the game itself you can find some statistics for your soldiers in your player profile. We also have leaderboards, which shows how you are ranked for various actions. You can find the leaderboard here
Can I see any in-game footage, and if so, where?
What are the minimum system requirements?
Take look here for the current required specifications – http://heroesandgenerals.com/game/user-guide/
What Operating Systems will Heroes & Generals work with?
All released and fully supported versions of Microsoft Windows are supported, this is currently Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.
Will there be Mac/Linux/Console versions?
Not in the near future, but we won’t rule it out when the stars are right.
What engine is used for Heroes & Generals?
We have developed our own engine. We call it…(drum-roll)…. Retox!
Will there be a built-in voice chat and/or chat-commands?
We are not working on internal voice chat for the time being. There are a number of player-run voice chat servers that can be used. Regarding chat-commands, it is not something we have planned for now.
Where are the physical servers placed?
Currently we have action game servers placed in Asia (Japan + Singapore), Australia, Europe (Germany), Russia, South america (Brasil), US East and US West. The strategy servers are not depending on low ping and are placed in the Netherlands (Rotterdam).
So how do I pick the server closest to where I live?
As explained in the question regarding the Campaign, the Generals will decide where there will be action games on the campaign map. When a battle is about to commence, the matchmaker will determine the most suitable server to provide the best ping for the majority of the players.
Will there be more servers in other regions?
We continually monitor where players are located and add new server locations as necessary.
Do you have measures in place to avoid people with high ping ruining the game for others?
A bad Internet connection will only affect the client with the high latency. The server never waits for a client, so if you have fluctuating ping times you might be in a situation where your inputs arrive at the server too late for it to take them into account. The client attempts to set the push latency based on the ping times from the last few seconds. This push latency controls how far ahead of the server’s time the client is.
So if you have 200ms latency your client will advance the game-states it receives from the server by 200ms and integrate the result into your local game-world. This way your local input will have 200 ms to get to the server, and if the push latency is estimated correctly it will arrive at the server just before the server needs it to update the game state.
What ports do I need to open in my NAT/firewall?
The list of ports and server addresses can be found in this Knowledge Base article.
What type of community are you aiming for?
The Internet is very unpredictable. It is our wish, to have a friendly, respectful and constructive community, where harassment and personal attacks are limited to a bare minimum. Being a small independent developer, it will not be easy for us to constantly keep an eye on everyone; neither do we wish to do so. It is up to the community itself, to build the atmosphere they want. We will have easy to use processes in place, so that our community can report a player who breaks the EULA.
How will you react to cheaters/hackers/exploiters/trolls?
By creating an account for Heroes & Generals, you will accept our terms and condition that limits this kind of behavior. If you break it, we will take the necessary disciplinary actions that we deem fit, on a case by case basis. We strongly encourage all of our community, to swiftly report players who do any of the above actions. You can do this using the ingame reporting tool, where you report players from the scoreboard (default key: TAB).
It is one of our absolute highest priorities, to keep a “clean” gaming environment, where everyone can have fun, on equal terms.

How do the leaderboards work?
The leaderboards section shows how players rank in a wide variety of in-game activities. Leaderboards are divided into a handful of main categories, each with a number of subcategories.
All leaderboards show player performances from the last 30 days. To stay on top, you need to play!
Leaderboards are updated every 60 minutes with the latest timestamp appearing at the bottom of the screen. Times are shown in UTC.
Q: How do I climb the leaderboards?
A: Each leaderboard has a short description at the top telling you what it ranks, e.g. Melee Kills. Keep practicing a specific skill and you will surely climb the boards.Q: How do I see my own rank?
A: Simply click a category and input your player name in the “Player Name” field to the right. Your position will now be highlighted on any leaderboard. All leaderboards are soldier-based, meaning they show your highest ranked soldiers on each board.Q: Why am I not on the leaderboard?
A: If none of your soldiers have engaged in the activities being tracked on specific leaderboards in the last 30 days, they will of course not show up on those leaderboards. E.g. if you’ve not made any kills with melee weapons for 30 days, you will not appear on the Melee Kills leaderboard.Q: How do I get back to the main leaderboard page?
A: Simply click the LEADERBOARDS menu item at the top of the page. How does the new AI introduced in Update 1.16.2 Work?
AI controlled soldiers will now join each team in Staged Battles to assist with capturing.
Q: Are the AI soldiers’ names supposed to be displayed on the scoreboard?
A: No.Q: When I kill an AI opponent, or get killed by an AI, is this counted as kills/deaths on the scoreboard?
A: Yes.Q: Do I gain the same amount of experience point for killing an AI opponent as for killing an enemy player?
A: No. The rewards are the same as for killing the AI in the Encounter game mode.Q: How many AI soldiers are there per faction/attack line?
A: The total number of AI per faction depends on the number of active attack lines at the start of the mission. Each faction can have a maximum of 4 AI per line (4 for the attackers, 4 for the defenders).Q: Will there still be AI if the mission already contains the maximum number of human players?
A: Yes. AI soldiers are not counted towards the player maximum.Q: Are the AI intended to interact with vehicles/planes?
A: Currently, AI can only deploy on player-owned vehicles. They are not able to spawn or drive their own vehicles.Q: Can they spawn from infantry transport vehicles (and/or other vehicles like terrain vehicles, right after spawning)?
A: AI can only deploy on infantry transport vehicles (so-called “APCs”: transport trucks and halftracks).Q: Is killing an AI from my own faction counted as a teamkill?
A: Yes.Q: In Skirmishes, will the AI only defend the points owned by my faction, or will they start capturing neutral points (all points in the beginning)?
A: In the Skirmish mode, they should try to capture all points and spread out evenly.Q: Can I use the anti-grief system to report an AI for damaging/destroying friendly vehicles and players, as I would for a human teamkiller?
A: The AI soldiers should in theory never fire at friendlies, so there is no option to report them. Please let us know if you see this happening (makesure to provide the Mission ID).
