How to Hide or Show the Mac’s Dock

Control your Mac’s Dock visibility with a few easy tips

What to Know

• Open System Preferences, select Dock, and check or uncheck Automatically hide and show the Dock.
• Or, use the keyboard shortcut Command(⌘)+Option+D to toggle the Dock to show or hide.
• Or, move the cursor to the Dock separator, right-click, then select Turn Hiding On or Turn Hiding Off to hide or show the Dock.

This article explains how to show or hide the Dock using System Preferences, a keyboard shortcut, or a mouse or trackpad, and how to make the Dock smaller on your screen while keeping it visible. Information in this article applies to macOS Big Sur through High Sierra.

How to Hide or Show the Dock on a Mac

Here’s how to control your Mac Dock’s visibility and performance.

From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.

Select the Dock icon. On Big Sur, click Dock & Menu Bar.

Select the Automatically hide and show the Dock box to make the Dock go away when you’re not using it. Remove the check mark if you want the Dock to remain visible all the time.

Close the Dock’s preferences pane.

When Automatically Hide and Show the Dock is selected, the Dock disappears when it’s not in use. You make it reappear as needed by moving the mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen where the Dock typically resides. If you moved the Dock to the left or right edge of the screen, move the mouse to that side of the screen.

Use the Keyboard to Show or Hide the Dock

In addition to using the Dock preferences to configure whether the Dock is shown or hidden, you can also control its visibility directly from the keyboard.

Use the Command(⌘)+Option+D keyboard shortcut to toggle the Dock to show or hide. The advantage of this method is that you can change the visibility setting instantaneously without bringing up the System Preferences.

Use the Mouse or Trackpad to Show or Hide the Dock

One last method for changing the visibility setting of the Dock is to use your mouse or trackpad to access a secret menu in the Dock. Move the cursor to the Dock separator, the small vertical line that sits between the Dock apps and any folders or documents you installed in the Dock.

With the cursor on the Dock separator, right-click and select Turn Hiding On to hide the Dock. If the Dock is usually hidden, move the cursor to the Dock area to make the Dock appear, then right-click the Dock separator and select Turn Hiding Off.

You can also use the Dock separator to access any of the Dock settings quickly. Right-click the Dock separator and select Dock Preferences.

Reducing Dock Real Estate

If you want to keep the Dock on-screen but want it to take up as little space as possible, use the Dock preference pane to control the size and magnification. Use the Size slider to change the overall size of the Dock. Be aware, however, that you can set it so small that it’s hard to see what each Dock icon represents.

Magnification is the secret to using the smallest Dock possible. Enable magnification by placing a check mark in the Magnification box in the Dock preferences.

Then, use the magnification slider to set the expanded-view size of the Dock. As the cursor passes over any section of the tiny Dock, the position under the cursor is magnified, making that portion of the Dock easy to read while keeping the overall Dock small.

Subtle Dock Changes

There is more to the Dock than hiding and showing. In addition to being able to move the Dock to the left or right side of the screen, you can make subtle changes that affect the Dock both in controlling how fast the Dock appears or disappears, as well as eliminating some of the Dock’s animation to speed things up a bit more. Use your Mac with the Dock visible and then invisible, and see which way you like it best.

Добавление объектов в Dock: Перетяните приложения налево от линии (или выше линии), отделяющей недавно использованные приложения. Перетяните приложения направо от другой линии (или ниже этой линии), отделяющей недавно использованные приложения. В Dock помещается псевдоним объекта.

Удаление объектов из Dock: Перетяните объект за пределы Dock, пока не увидите надпись «Удалить». Удаляется только псевдоним; сам объект остается на Mac.

Если Вы случайно удалили значок приложения из Dock, его можно легко вернуть (приложение остается на Mac). Откройте приложение, чтобы его значок снова появился в Dock. Нажмите значок приложения, удерживая клавишу Control, затем выберите «Параметры» > «Оставить в Dock».

Например, можно изменить внешний вид объектов в панели Dock, настроить ее размер, расположить ее вдоль левого или правого края и даже скрыть панель Dock.

Hide and Show the Dock in Mac OS X

The Dock is one of those staple features of Mac OS X, containing all running apps and also serving as a quick launch bar for opening applications and managing multitasking. The Dock is popular and intuitive enough for it to be a core user interface element beyond the Mac, included as a major component in iOS and other OS’s too.

A simple trick to improve Dock functionality is hide it when the Dock is not actively in use. When the automatically hide feature is on, the Dock only shows itself when a cursor is placed over the region of the Mac screen where the Dock is displayed. This is easy to configure, either with a keyboard shortcut or by visiting the Mac OS X system preference settings, let’s get to it cover both.

How to Hide and Show the Dock with a Keyboard Shortcut

If you hit Command+Option+D it will automatically hide or show the Dock in Mac OS X. If you choose to hide it this way, it will reappear back if you hover over the region that you have your Dock placed with the mouse cursor.

The keyboard shortcut effectively toggles the auto-hide feature on or off without going into the System Preferences, which we’ll cover next:

How to Automatically Hide the Dock When Not in Use on Mac

You can set the Dock to automatically hide itself when it’s not being used by either hitting the key shortcut as mentioned above, or by enabling the option in the Dock Preference panel. For most Mac users, the System Preferences method is preferred:

• Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu and choose “Dock”
• Check the box for “Automatically hide and show the Dock” by clicking the checkbox next to it

If the setting is checked, the Dock will hide and show itself automatically when the cursor is near the bottom of the screen.

If the setting is unchecked, the Dock will always be visible at the bottom of the Mac screen.

The setting exists in all versions of Mac OS X whether they are new or old, but you may find the toggle in System Preferences looks very slightly different in past versions of Mac OS X, mostly because there are less options available to customize the Dock experience in general:

Showing the Dock When It’s Hidden, and Hiding The Dock When It’s Visible

When this box is checked, the dock will automatically hide itself when it’s not in use.

To make the Dock appear, simply hover the mouse cursor over the bottom of the screen.

To make the Dock disappear again, simply move the cursor away from the bottom of the Mac screen. Easy!

This is an underused but great feature that preserves screen real estate, making it particularly valuable for Mac users with smaller displays, like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Why Auto-Hide the Dock?

Whether you auto-hide the Dock or not is a matter of personal preference, but if you like to maximize your screen space you may like the feature.

I use the Dock constantly, combined with Spotlight it’s how I launch applications on my Mac. However, I find that having the Dock automatically hide itself when not in use saves me a fair amount of screen real estate on my MacBook Pro 13″ and this is particularly valuable with maximized applications and web browsing.

Modern versions of Mac OS X will see the Dock automatically hide itself by default when entering into the full screen app mode.

New to the Mac and not sure about the Dock yet? Think of it similar to the task bar for Windows, though modern versions have used variations of the Dock theme and incorporated into Vista, Win 7, and Windows 8. Similarly, Dock-like functionality is included Android and Ubuntu too for that matter, it’s just one of the most convenient ways to quickly launch apps, whatever you’re using.
