Many, much, a lot of. Английский для начинающих.

Очень часто, говоря о количестве чего-либо мы хотим подчеркнуть, что этого было много . В таком случае необходимо использовать слова much , many или a lot of , с которыми иногда возникает путаница. Разберемся, как правильно использовать их в речи.

Исчисляемые и неисчисляемые существительные

Для того, чтобы разобраться в этой теме, необходимо понять разницу исчисляемых и неисчисляемых существительных. На самом деле все очень просто: исчисляемые существительные – это предметы, которые можно посчитать (соответственно, они могут быть в единственном или во множественном числе), а неисчисляемые существительные – это вещи, которые нельзя посчитать (соответственно, они не имеют множественного числа).

a lemon – two lemons (лимон – два лимона)
lemon – исчисляемое существительное

bread – lots of bread (хлеб – много хлеба)
bread – неисчисляемое существительное

Обратите внимание: некоторые существительные могут употребляться в роли как исчисляемых, так и неисчисляемых, но тогда их значение будет разным:

We don’t have time . (У нас нет времени .)
time – неисчисляемое существительное

We were there five times last week. (Мы были там пять раз на прошлой неделе.)
time – исчисляемое существительное

Употребление a lot of

В утвердительных предложениях рекомендуется использовать a lot of или его краткую форму lots of , чтобы указать на большое количество чего-либо:

I have a lot of books on my desk.
У меня на столе много книг.

They drink lots of water.
Они пьют много воды.

Обратите внимание, для a lot of и lots of нет разницы, с какими существительными их использовать: с исчисляемыми или с неисчисляемыми. Эти выражения подходят к любому типу.

Кроме того, a lot of и lots of можно употреблять в других типах предложения (в отрицательных и вопросительных):

I don’t have lots of time.
У меня нет много времени.

We don’t bake a lot of bread.
Мы не выпекаем много хлеба.

Употребление quite a lot of

Дословно quite a lot of означает « достаточно много », и употребляется, чтобы указать на среднее количество чего-либо:

She has quite a lot of clothes.
У нее довольно много одежды.

Обратите внимание, выражение quite lots of является неверным.

Употребление many и much

В отрицательных и вопросительных предложениях рекомендуется использовать many или much:

I don’t have much coffee.
У меня немного кофе.

Have you got many books?
У тебя много книг?

Разница many и much

Главное отличие many и much заключается в том, что many употребляется с исчисляемыми существительными, а much – с неисчисляемыми :

We don’t have many bananas.
У нас немного бананов.

Sarah doesn’t drink much tea.
Сара не пьет много чая.

How much / How many

Чтобы задать вопрос о количестве чего-либо, необходимо использовать how much или how many. Выбор снова зависит от того, о каком существительном идет речь: исчисляемом или неисчисляемом (How many употребляется с исчисляемыми существительными, а How much – с неисчисляемыми):

How many burgers can you eat?
Сколько бургеров ты можешь съесть?

How much bread do you eat?
Сколько хлебa ты ешь?

Ответы на вопрос с How many

При ответе на вопрос с how many есть несколько вариантов, в зависимости от значения.

Можно ответить кратко:

How many books are there?
Сколько там книг?

Можно ответить полным предложением:

There are a lot of / lots of books.
Там много книг.

There are quite a lot of books.
Там достаточно много книг.

There aren’t many books.
Там не много книг.

Ответы на вопрос с How much

При ответе на вопрос с how mach есть несколько вариантов, в зависимости от значения.

Можно ответить кратко:

How much milk do you drink?
Сколько молока ты пьешь?

Можно ответить полным предложением:

I drink a lot of / lots of milk.
Я пью много молока.

I drink quite a lot of milk.
Я пью довольно много молока.

I don’t drink much milk.
Я не пью много молока.
