How to install snap kali linux

I was trying to install snap-store in kali linux 2020.4 .

I tried above source code. And, I am getting that I have successfully installed snap-store .

But, when I am trying to run snap-store .

You can see I have successfully installed snap-store. But, there’s no snap-store in my directory. Again, when I tried to run snap-store this way.

Then, I am able to run that way. But, I need Desktop-Entry of it..

Look I have installed lot more software also.

I can only run them via snap run [package name] . There’s no desktop entry of them. So, it means I have successfully installed snap-store only there’s no desktop entry of snap-store and others.

How to solve it?

Installing snap from a live Kali Linux environment is not currently supported. These instructions only work when Kali Linux is installed.

From a Kali Linux installation, snap can be installed directly from the command line:

Additionally, enable and start both the snapd and the snapd.apparmor services with the following command:

Finally, either log out and back in again, or restart your system, to ensure snap’s paths are updated correctly. if you don’t do this step, menu shortcuts won’t appear!

The Snap Store app is installed with the following command:

now reboot or at least log out and back in. if the menu shortcuts still don’t appear you can try to run this command: ln -st

/.local/share/applications /var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/*.desktop I haven’t tested it, so I don’t know if it will break something. use at your own risk!

In earlier version of Kali(older than 2020.1) didn’t have access to create desktop entry while directly installing any software from snapd. But, if you install gnome in Kali in any version than you will have desktop entry of those files. I don’t know why whenever I use gnome I get desktop entry of those software which I installed from snapd. But, when I don’t use gnome I don’t get any desktop entry of those software. I really don’t know why this happens. Since then, I always install gnome. Even, I didn’t have any idea of command lines when I asked the question. As @Itai Nelken said in his answer ln -st

/.local/share/applications /var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/*.desktop to use these commands I think this commands are «saying» that to take them to another directory. And, he warned that, I haven’t tested it, so I don’t know if it will break something. use at your own risk! And, now I think this could break something. Cause, they are not likely to run by snap run

cause, they aren’t in their directory where snap searches them. That’s why it’s likely to break.

How to install Snap on Kali Linux

We will look at how to install the Snap package format on Kali Linux. Snap is an independent package format developed by Canonical and first released in 2014.

P reviously, we looked at some of the available distribution independent package formats used to install apps on Linux systems. They include Snap, FlatPak, and AppImage. Our post on ‘Snap vs. Flatpak vs. AppImage: Know The Differences, Which is Better’ will give you a detailed guide and the difference between the three. In this post, we will look at how you can install the Snap package format on Kali Linux.

Kali Linux is a Debian-based Linux distribution developed for performing Penetration Testing and Digital Forensics. If you are a beginner getting into the field of Cybersecurity, you can also check our post on ‘The 10 Best Programming Languages for Hacking.’ The Snap (also called Snappy) packaging and deployment system are not available on Kali Linux by default. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t install it.

Installing SNAP on Kali Linux

As of writing this post, installing Snap on a Kali ‘Live environment’ is not supported. These instructions will work well on an Installed Kali Linux system.

To install Snap on Kali Linux, we will go the command-line way. Let’ get started.

Step 1. Launch the Terminal from the applications menu. Alternatively, you can use the (Ctrl + Alt + T) keyboard shortcut.

Step 2. Execute the apt update command to ensure all system packages are up-to-date with the latest versions.

Step 3. Install the REST API daemon used for managing Snap packages and applications – Snapd.

Step 4. Once snapd installs successfully, we will need to start and enable the snapd and the snapd.AppArmor services. Execute the command below on your Kali Terminal. Please note, you might be required to enter your root password because starting some of these services require sudo privileges.

Now restart your Kali system or logout and login back in again to updated the snap paths. To check whether Snap is successfully installed, run the version command below:

Test Snap Package Format

Now let’s test our snap installation by installing Telegram Desktop. Execute the command below on your Terminal.

Now, let’s run Telegram with the command below.

The main Telegram window will open, and you can log in to your account or create an account.

Специалисты портала Bleeping Computer проверили, что это действительно работает. Они опубликовали свою инструкцию по установке и запуску Kali Linux с графическим интерфейсом для подсистемы Windows для Linux (WSL2).

Установка Kali Linux с GUI возможна только на ПК с ОС Windows 10 версии 2004.

На подготовительном этапе необходимо в ОС активировать подсистему Windows для Linux.
