If you are just wiping the drive, then any Ubuntu would do. The tool you would use is called GParted, and you can get it seperately if you dont want to download the whole operating system.

im really not all that computer smart. can you explain more about GParted? from what i read i think its an optimized version of ubuntu for x86 based computers?

Just install Ubuntu and let it do the work. The newest version is 11.04 (Natty Norwhal) and the newest LTS is 10.04.2 (Lucid Lynx). Your choice. The 11.04 version is supported until Oct 2012 and 10.04 is supported until Apr 2013, being a Long Term Supported version.

is there a way to download ubuntu already usb bootable? i cant get into files to run the 123 usb thing. i can only download things to my thumb drive with the computer im using.

HP launches Mini 110 and 1101 netbooks running Windows XP, Vista, and Linux

HP is expanding its netbook lineup with three new models. All three feature 10.1 inch, 1024 x 576 pixel displays and 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processors. You know, just like the existing HP Mini 1000 line of netbooks. But there are a few details that make the new HP Mini 110, Mini 110 Mi Edition, and Mini 1101 stand out.

First, all three machines are available with high capacity hard drives. The HP Mini 1000 tops out at 80GB because HP decided to keep the chassis as small as possible and use a 1.8″ HDD. The new models are a little thicker (up to 1.3″ thick at their beefiest points), but some modesl are available with hard drives that pack 160GB of storage space or more.

Second, the machines that don’t run Windows XP are available with up to 2GB of RAM and hard drives up to 250GB. That goes for the HP Mini 110 Mi Edition which runs a custom version of Ubuntu Linux (much like the HP Mini 1000 Mi Edition) and the HP Mini 1101 which can run either Windows XP or Vista. Oh yeah, and third HP is offering a Windows Vista option.

All three netbooks should be available at HP’s Mini site starting in June.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the options available with each of the new machines:

• HP Mini 110 XP Edition: This model comes with either a 32GB solid state drive or a 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, and optional WWAN. At launch this netbook will be available with the same black swhirl pattern found on the HP Mini 1000, but in July it will also be available in white and pink. The HP Mini 110 XP Edition will also be available with an optional Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video Accelerator for handling 1080p video. A high resolution 1366 x 768 pixel display option will eventually be available as well. This netbook should be available starting June 10th with a base price of $329.99.
• HP Mini 110 Mi Edition: This version comes with Ubuntu Linux and HP’s custom Mi Edition interface for the operating system. It will be available with up to 2GB of RAM and a hard drive up to 250GB. Prices start at $279.99. The HP Mini 110 Mi Edition should be available June 10th for $279.99.
• HP Mini 1101: This model will be available with Windows XP Home, XP Pro, or Vista. You can also get it with freeDOS if you want to install your own operating system. It’s available with a 32GB SSD or 160GB or 250GB hard disk. There’s also an optional EV-DO/HSPA mobile broadband modem. The HP Mini 1101 will be available starting June 1st with a starting price of $329.

Update: Laptop Magazine also noticed that the new HP Minis have 3 USB ports (previous models had just 2), and comes with Syncables software for synchronizing files between your netbook and another PC. HP also released a short promotional video. You can watch it after the break.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix on HP Mini 110

Note: This article is written for the Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 release. The current release of Ubuntu is 11.10 (as of Jan-12) and no longer offer the Netbook Remix, although the standard edition is said to work on netbooks.

For a long time I have been looking to try out the Netbook release of the famous Ubuntu Linux distribution, and see if it made my HP Mini 110 any better than running it with Windows 7.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix is a optimised edition of the desktop Linux system with a custom layout and interface that is intend to ease and enhance the netbook experience. As the desktop edition, the netbook remix comes with Firefox, OpenOffice, Empathy just to name a few to get you started on your way.
I have installed this onto my HP Mini 110 (HP Mini 110-1135TU) and it is now running great. However, there were some things I had to do before it was 100%. Out of the box, the wireless card does not work. Standard Ethernet does, but wireless cannot be found. But before I go into that lets start with the install.

This is a simple table outlining the devices and their working state on the netbook once the OS was installed.

Download and Install

This is how I got it installed. First I must emphasis the importance of a good backup before system changes. Please perform a backup before continuing. Also make sure you have an available 1GB+ USB Flash Drive. This will be used for the install.

1) Download the Ubuntu Netbook Remix from here.
2) Once the ISO was downloaded, I went to Pendrivelinux.com and downloaded the Universal USB Installer. This utility will install the ISO image onto a USB Flash Drive. Please backup any data off this drive as it will be formatted and all data will be lost. When running the software, select Ubuntu Netbook remix 10.10 from the drop-down and it should automatically find the ISO image (if not you can always manually locate it). Next plug in you USB Flash Drive and select the drive letter from the dropdown. Then click Create. Once this is done, continue on.

3) Plug the USB Flash Drive into the HP Mini 110 and boot off the Flash Drive. You can force this by pressing F9 at the BIOS to bring up the Boot Order Menu. Once you have selected the USB and are booting, this will take some time. This will boot into Ubuntu Live giving you a chance to demo the software. When you are ready, install the software with your preferred configurations.

4) Once you have installed the system you can now start using your netbook. Next I will guide you through getting the wireless working. Out of the box 90% of the devices are working without any configuration so enjoy.

Wireless Network Card

Getting the wireless interface was so what tricky and didn’t seem easy at first but then I was surprised when it did work. I was able to get it working with the thanks to some helpful contributors at Ubuntuforms.com.
1) Ensure the wireless switch is on.
2) Open Terminal. This can be found in the Applications menu.
3) These are a series of commands that will uninstall the various components and reinstall them.
-sudo apt-get – -purge remove firmware-b43-installer
-sudo apt-get – -purge remove dkms
-sudo apt-get – -purge remove bcmwl-kernel-source
-sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
-sudo reboot
4) Once the netbook has rebooted, your wireless card should now be working.
