HP simplePass Identity Protection has been disabled after upgrading to Windows 10
The migration to Windows 10 has pushed the Operating System beyond the point where there are HP Drivers available for your computer. The lack of HP Drivers (for Windows 10) may increase the challenges you face when trying to install programs that are dependent on the HP infrastructure.
Simply put: Some programs may not function as expected (or hoped).
Synaptics / Validity Driver
If you are not yet doing so, you need to install a Driver that is at least compatible with Windows 8.
If your Validity Driver is not Windows 8.x compliant, install this Driver:
Windows Hello — fingerprint logon
You must be able to enable the fingerprint reader to use fingerprint logon (provided by Windows) and / or the HP SimplePass program (login and websites / passwords).
Windows 10 security requires that you assign a PIN login to enable the fingerprint reader.
In most cases, once you have a fingerprint driver installed that Windows can use, you can then assign the PIN number and then enable the fingerprint reader (scanner on your notebook).
Windows 10 > Settings > Account > Sign-in Options > PIN number >> PIN assignment is mandatory
Regardless of whether you intend to use SimplePass (or other third party security software), there are prerequisites for setting and using the Native Windows fingerprint logon. The system recognizes the Windows Logon software as “primary” and requires that the Windows fingerprint logon be set up and functional.
If you have an old version of HP SimplePass installed, uninstall it > reboot the computer > proceed
If all else fails and you cannot enable the fingerprint reader in Settings, try installing the latest version of HP SimplePass > Boot computer > enable PIN and fingerprint reader.
Windows 10 and its accompanying Updates appears to have (finally) created an environment in which the old Series 6 (AuthenTec) HP SimplePass no longer functions.
This means: HP SimplePass versions 6.x are likely to fail when installed on Windows 10.
This is not a failure of HP — the code writers (authors) that provided the old Series 6.x HP SimplePass program sold their company to Apple. The program code cannot be updated. Series 6 HP SimplePass is supported to the extent that it is still available (at this writing) for download and use.
This means: If you were running HP SimplePass version 6.x you will likely need to abandon the program and migrate to the supported version of HP SimplePass.
To that end, the latest version of HP SimplePass (at this writing) is compatible with Windows 10:
- Series 8 is not an upgrade of Series 6 — these are two separate, competing programs written by different companies.
- Series 6 HP SimplePass (by AuthenTec) and Series 8 HP SimplePass (by Softex) are not compatible.
- There is no conversion program for encrypted Export of websites / passwords. This means that even should you have your Series 6 Export file (.tsd), you cannot use it or convert it for use with Series 8 (Vault file .opi).
- Series 6 HP SimplePass cannot be on the computer at the same time as Series 8 HP SimplePass.
- You can switch Series.
General chain of events
- Create a Restore Point
- Install / Reinstall Validity Driver
- Restart the computer and log in
- Assign PIN and enable fingerprint reader

Not sure what happened to my original post, seems to have been removed for some reason.
Last week I purchased the above notebook, a HP Envy 17-N152NA, model N9Q54EA which both the store specification and the specification on the HP website say that the note book has HP SimplePass Identity Protection Software but for some reason mine does not.
I have looked in Recovery manager and it does not even list it to be reinstalled..
It does have the fingerprint scanner, and the biometric option in device manager and I can set up a PIN and then setup fingerprint in setting although that is greyed out as I have yet to add a pin.
I have noticed that i DO NOT have biometric options listed in control panel which it seems it should, or would this appear when the software is installed?
If I go to the HP Support and drivers page for the notebook HP SimplePass Identity Protection Software is listed, do I just need to download this? Is it not needed as it appeares Windows 10 will use its own method? or are the specifications incorrect? I suspect not as both HP and the store say it has the option and HP show the software to download.
Thanks and sorry sorry for all the questions and if my original post broke any rules..
Hope you can offer advice (again) on all the questions above.

The following assumes your computer is a consumer grade notebook and NOT a business notebook.
Windows 10 comes installed with Windows fingerprint logon software — from Microsoft.
Once configured with a PIN number to allow access to the fingerprint portion of the logon, Windows 10 Logon can log you into your computer account using the fingerprint scanner.
SimplePass might be offered for your computer from your computer’s website support page for Windows 10. If the program is not at your computer’s website support page, you can still download a copy of the program from HP.
If you have never had SimplePass on the computer in the past, you want to install and run the latest version of the Series 8 HP SimplePass program.
If you used run HP SimplePass on your computer, then you want to install the latest version of the HP SimplePass program in the same «Series» as you have used in the past.
There are two separate (and unrelated) SimplePass program sets:
AuthenTec Series 6 HP SimplePass
Softex Series 8 HP SimplePass
In addition to the program itself, you will need the Validity Driver that supports the fingerprint scanner built into the computer. SimplePass talks to the Validity Driver — the driver talks to the fingerprint hardware.
If your computer is new (not migrated to Windows 10), you likely already have the Validity / Synaptics Fingerprint driver that is needed.
If you computer has been migrated to Windows 10 from an older Operating System, you need to use a Validity Sensor Driver that matches your computer’s fingerprint scanner hardware — and that Driver must be at least compatible with Windows 8.x. The Driver may be available at your computer’s Website support pages.
General rules for success:
- Know which Series of SimplePass you need
- Create a Restore Point
- (Re)install the Validity Sensor Driver for your computer
- Reboot and Log in
- Install your chosen SimplePass package
- Reboot and log in
