Hardware Monitor for Mac is an application to read out hardware sensors in Macintosh computers. Several hundred sensors in more than 70 model series are supported. The program can display and visualize measured values in a large variety of fashions, including speech output. Readings can be stored and exported. In addition, artificial software sensors monitoring macOS can be defined, and external LCD units can be controlled.

Hardware Monitor for macOS also allows you to explore other technical data of your computer, like exact processor type, logicboard data, battery, display, and drive information, or manufacturing details.

Depending on what sensors are built into your Mac, the following data can be accessed:

  • Temperature readings at different locations
  • Battery data of portable computers
  • Voltage sensors
  • Current (amperage) sensors
  • Fan speed sensors
  • Power and load sensors
  • Ambient light sensors
  • User-defined artificial sensors to monitor the operating system

Hardware Monitor for Mac is part of an application suite for the macOS operating system. The applications are designed to read out the hardware sensors built into every up-to-date Mac. Additional information can be retrieved as well. Among other data, this includes:

  • Processor type and clock frequencies
  • Apple model identification and manufacturing data
  • Physical and virtual memory details
  • Logicboard information
  • Version numbers of the operating system environment
  • System management information, including connectors and jumpers
  • Battery details (on portable computers)
  • Overview of disk drives
  • Display screen identification

LPC Sensors configuration

On non-Apple hardware the LPC chip requires additional kernel extensions to read values of the motherboard sensors:

FakeSMC plugins require, when a configuration is not present, the editing of the Info.plist where you must specify the OEM vendor, the board and the configuration for each sensors such voltages, Fans and temperature. If the configuration it’s already present you have to do nothing.

We recently added Support for SMCSuperIO.kext which, unlike FakeSMC plugins, doesn’t publish SMC keys for motherboards sensors.

With the help of many users we already collected some configurations for some Asus and Gigabyte motherboards, but if this is not the case for you, consider running the hwmlpcconfig command line.

hwmlpcconfig (you can find it in the Download page) create

/Desktop/LPC which (for supported chips) should create a raw configuration file ready to be edited with the correct values.

A README.txt is created with the instruction to create the unique config for your motherboard. The customized configuration, then, must be place inside the app (SharedSupport/LPC directory) to get the app to apply the corrections needed. Of course, you will have to open a pull request (PR) on github if you want your changes to persist across updates of HWMonitorSMC2.app.

On Apple hardware you have to do nothing!

If you want to expand functionalities of the app, you can Install IntelPowerGadget.framework and ensure it is enabled in the preferences.

What is the PMU option for?

PMU stands for «Performance Monitoring Unit» and allow higher accuracy data with lower overhead using the Intel Power Gadget library. Be aware that this option needs exclusive access to the Power Gadget library.

The app no longer shows the main window after installing Intel Power Gadget

Intel Power Gadget installs a framework and a kernel extension. If one of the two crashes, HWMonitorSMC2 will crash as well. To ignore it temporarily create a file to your Desktop:

and restart HWMonitorSMC2.app. That happened on my Ivy Bridge MacBook Pro, and the fastest solution seems to be to re-run the Intel Power Gadget Installer followed by a reboot.

HWMonitorSMC2 shows nothing or little information about my GPUs

go the preferences and enable «Use the IOKit monitoring for GPUs» and the app will start using the PerformancesStatistics, under the IOAccelerator class in the IO, to retrieve informations about graphics cards.

Displays complete information about your hardware’s temperatures, fan speeds and power consumption

Like many OS X system utilities of this kind, once the installation is completed, HWMonitor will integrate itself into the OS X status bar and, once you click it, a drop-down window will appear displaying system stats in six little panels, namely Temperatures, Drive Temperatures, Fans and Pumps, Voltages, Currents, and Power Consumption.

One big plus is the fact that HWMonitor enables you to conveniently add separate icons for each of the panels to the OS X status bar, for instant access to temperature readings that interest you most.

In order to do that, select the Preferences menu from the HWMonitor’s drop-down window, click the Menubar tab, and move the sensors from the left category into the Menubar Items category on the right, so that they will permanently appear as separate entities on the OS X menu bar.

HWMonitor for Mac

The hardware component of every computer is vital to the performance of the system. In fact, it goes a long way to determine the type of application that the computer is capable of running. Besides, the state of the various hardware component is also vital to the performance of the computer. Therefore, there is a need for consistent monitoring of the hardware to ascertain the system performance. This program leaves an icon on the system tray that presents the user with vital information regarding the hardware components and their present state. Как отследить температуру и нагрузку процессора Mac OS Хакинтош

Долгое время, я задавался вопросом мониторинга нагрузки и температуры процессора. Отслеживание температуры и нагрузки в некоторых случаях просто необходимы, как бы мы не махали на них рукой. Конечно, пока системный блок только что собранный, а ноутбук только с магазина об этом мало задумываешься, но время то идет.

Когда необходим мониторинг температуры и нагрузки процессора:

  • Когда системный блок или ноутбук стал более шумным, вентиляторы вращаются быстрее, чем ранее, что и создает дополнительный шум;
  • Когда компьютер используется для 3D рендеров и видео монтажа. В этих случаях нагрузка на процессор и видеокарту более значительны, чем при просмотре youtube и соответственно термо-паста выйдет из строя значительно раньше. Что повлечет повышения температуры процессора, его сбои, выключение ПК и перегрев с последующим выходом из строя;
  • Когда ПК используется для ИГР, нагрузка большая следовательно и паста прослужит меньше, как и в верхнем пункте;
  • Когда компьютер используется без обслуживания и чистки более 3-х лет — периодический мониторинг обязателен.

Так же могут быть и другие примеры — разгон процессора и видеокарты, компьютер куплен б/у и тому подобное.

Intel® Power Gadget

Утилита представленная производителем Intel. С помощью этой утилиты доступны данные по нагрузке процессора, энергопотреблению и температуре процессора. Но подойдет он только пользователям, которые используют процессоры от производителя INTEL.

Программа представляет собой небольшое окно, в котором можно отслеживать все изменения датчиков в реальном времени. Очень удобно.

Проста в установке и абсолютно бесплатна.

Но данная утилита разработана производителями только для мониторинга температуры и нагрузки на процессор, данных о скорости вентилятора и температуре видеокарты на своем Хакинтоше вы просмотреть не сможете. Для этого разработана вторая утилита, которую мы сейчас и рассмотрим.

HWMonitor

Утилита HWMonitor покажет температуру процессора и каждого ядра, материнской платы, видеокарты, скорость вентилятора, частоту работы, множители и многое другое.

Подходит для различных типов процессоров, что может быть актуально для хакинтошей.

Программа разработана для Mac OS X и на хакинтоше потребуется внести несколько изменений, что бы вам были доступными все эти данные.

После того как скачали дистрибутив, устанавливаем.

Монтируем EFI раздел, переходим в EFI-> Clover -> Kexts и добавляем скачанные кексты, при этом FakeSMC заменяем. Не стоит пугаться при замене, будет загружаться без проблем. Если же не заменить файл FakeSMC, то в 90% случаев просто никакой статистики, кроме температуры жесткого диска не будет.

После этого перезагружаемся, из Launchpad запускаем программу и получаем полную сводку.

Утилита работает отлично, но при запуске двух одновременно, я заметил небольшую задержку в смене температуры по сравнению с отображением утилиты интел. Но думая это можно настроить, для меня это не критичный момент, поэтому я оставил так как стоит по дефолту.

Следите за процессором при повышении температур не забывайте менять термо-пасту и тогда он будет служить долго и без тормозов.
