Supported systems: IBM System x3550 (Type 7978)
Follow the network operating system (NOS) installation instructions provided in this document in sequential order unless these instructions advise you otherwise. Windows and messages might differ from those in this document. Throughout this document, the term select is used to denote the use of arrow keys, the tab key, or Alt + a letter combination to make a selection from a menu. The term click is used to denote the use of a mouse to make a selection.
You must have the following software and hardware for the installation:
A licensed copy of Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
A USB diskette drive.
For servers using SAS hard disk drives, an Adaptec SAS device driver diskette. (To create this diskette, see 3.1 Creating an Adaptec SAS device driver diskette.)
For servers using SATA hard disk drives, an Adaptec SATA device driver diskette. (To create this diskette, see 3.2 Creating an Adaptec SATA device driver diskette.
Supported hard disk drives. Go to http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for the ServerProven list of supported options and part numbers for the server.
If you are using the IBM ServeRAID options, you need the IBM ServeRAID 7.10b (or later) Support CD.

To install Windows Server 2003 , you must first create an Adaptec SAS device driver diskette. Complete the steps in one of the following sections, depending on your hard disk drive type.
To create the Adaptec SAS device driver diskette, complete the following steps:
From an Internet-connected system with a diskette drive, go to: http://www-3.ibm.com/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4JTS2T, and select System x3550 from the list. Locate and click the link for the Adaptec SAS Driver for Microsoft Windows x64, and then click the executable file link.
When the Terms and Conditions window opens, choose one of the following options:
If you click I agree and Use Download Director is selected (the default), the .exe file is saved to a location that you specify. When you are prompted to launch the file, select Yes, and then go to step 3.
If you clear the Use Download Director check box, and click I agree, the File Download window opens. Click Save. The .exe file is saved to a local directory. Double-click the .exe file to run it.
When prompted, read the license agreement, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and click Next.
Insert a blank, formatted diskette, and click Next. The device driver files are then extracted to the diskette.
When prompted, click Quit.
To create the Adaptec SATA device driver diskette, complete the following steps:
From an Internet-connected system with a diskette drive, go to: http://www.ibm.com/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4JTS2T and select System x3550 from the list. Locate and click the link for the Adaptec SATA Driver for Microsoft Windows x64, and then click the executable file link.
When the Terms and Conditions window opens, choose one of the following options:
If you click I agree and Use Download Director is selected (the default), the .exe file is saved to a location that you specify. When you are prompted to launch the file, select Yes, and then go to step 3.
If you clear the Use Download Director check box, and click I agree, the File Download window opens. Click Save. The .exe file is saved to a local directory. Double-click the .exe file to run it.
When prompted, read the license agreement, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and click Next.
Insert a blank, formatted diskette, and click OK. The device driver files are then extracted to the diskette. When prompted, click Quit.
To install Windows Server 2003, complete the following steps:
Connect a USB diskette drive to the server.
Turn on the server and insert the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD into the CD drive. When you are prompted with the message Press any key to boot from cd, press any key.
When you are prompted Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver, press F6. Windows Server 2003 Setup copies the files from the setup CD. This process takes a few minutes.
When you are prompted to manually specify a controller, select S to specify additional devices.
When you are prompted for the manufacturer-supplied hardware support diskette, insert the Adapter SAS or SATA device driver diskette, and press Enter.
When the device driver name is displayed, press Enter.
After the files are copied from the diskette, press Enter. Files are copied from the setup CD. This process takes several minutes.
When you are prompted to install Windows Server 2003, press Enter.
When the license agreement is displayed, read the license agreement, and press F8 to agree.
When Windows Server 2003 Setup displays all hard disk storage that is available on the server, select one of the following options to choose or create a drive partition in which to install Windows Server 2003:
Allow Setup to create a partition: To partition the entire hard disk as one primary partition, highlight non-partitioned space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2003 and press Enter.
Create a partition: To create a partition, highlight Non-partitioned space for the hard disk drive on which you want to install Windows Server 2003 and press C. You are prompted to indicate how much available space to allocate from the non-partitioned drive. Type the amount of space (in MB) and press Enter.
Delete a partition.
When you are prompted to select a file system, select NTFS file system.
Setup formats the selected partition and copies the applicable files to the drive partition. This process takes several minutes.
The server restarts to the graphical portion of Setup where Setup continues with the installation of Windows Server 2003. During this process, Setup automatically installs and configures devices in the server. This process takes several minutes.
Change the regional settings if you are not installing the server in the US Click Next.
Note: To modify the regional settings after installing Windows Server 2003, click Control Panel and click Regional Options.
In the Personalize Your Software window, when you are prompted for your name and organization, type your name in the Name field and type your organization in the Organization field. The names that you type are used as default server names. Applications that you install later use this information for the product registration and document identification. Click Next.
When you are prompted for the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key, type the Windows Server 2003 Setup CD-Key in the applicable fields. Click Next. (Setup uses the organization name that was entered previously, as a suggested name for the server.)
In the Licensing Modes window, select the applicable licensing mode for your organization. Click Next.
In the Name and Administrator Password window, when you are prompted for an administrator password and server name, type the server name and password. Click Next. (Setup uses the organization name that was entered previously as a suggested name for the server.)
Note: Passwords are case sensitive. Be sure to use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters with at least one number for your password.
In the Time Zone window, set the current time. To change the date, click the button to the right of the date. To change the time, highlight the value that you want to change and enter the new values using the keyboard or the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys. Click Next.
Note: Windows Server 2003 services perform many tasks that are dependent on the accuracy of the time and date settings of the server. Be sure to select the correct time zone for the server location to avoid problems.
In the Networking Settings window, select Typical or Custom settings. If you are prompted, type the applicable network information. Click Next to install Windows networking components.
In the Workgroup or Computer Domain window, select one of the following options:
No, this computer is not on a network, it is a network without a domain.
Yes, make this computer a member of the following domain.
Type the workgroup or domain name in the applicable field. Click Next.
The remaining operating-system components are installed and configured according to the options that you specified. The display in the left column shows the amount of time remaining until the Windows Server 2003 installation is completed. This process might take several minutes.
When Windows Server 2003 Setup has completed installation, the server automatically restarts.
After Windows Server 2003 starts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to log on.
When the desktop is displayed, the Windows Server Post-Setup Security Updates wizard begins. If this server is connected to the Internet, this wizard helps you download software security updates and configure the system to retrieve updates automatically.
After closing the Security Updates wizard, the Manage Your Server wizard launches automatically. This wizard helps you to add and configure additional roles for the server, such as File Server, DHCP Server, Active Directory, and DNS. For more information, click Read about server roles in the wizard.
Note: You can skip this step and launch the wizard later by clicking Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Configure Your Server Wizard.
To install the device drivers and to identify hardware that is not functioning, open Device Manager. In Device Manager, non-functioning devices are usually listed under Other Devices and are indicated by a yellow exclamation point. To open Device Manager, complete the following steps:
Click Start.
Right-click My Computer.
Click Manage and select Device Manager in the left pane.
Use the procedures in the following sections to install the device drivers and to resolve any Unknown device.
To install the Broadcom NetXtreme II Gigabit Ethernet device driver, complete the following steps:
Go to MIGR-4JTS2T, select System x3550 from the list, select the Broadcom NetXtreme II Ethernet device driver file, and then click the executable file link.
When the Terms and Conditions window opens, choose one of the following options:
If you click I agree and the Use Download Director is checked (the default), the .exe file is saved to a location that you specify. When you are prompted to launch the file, select Yes, and then go to step 3.
If you clear the Use Download Director check box, and click I agree, the File Download window opens. Click Save. The .exe file is saved to a local directory. Double-click the .exe file to run it.
In the Welcome window, click Next.
In the License Agreement window, read the agreement and then click Next to continue.
Type c:\drivers\nic for the folder where the files are to be saved. Click Finish.
Click Yes to create the folder.
When the message The package has been delivered successfully is displayed, click OK.
Navigate to c:\drivers\nic, open the W2K3x64 folder, open the DrvInst folder, then open setup.exe.
In the Welcome window, click Next.
In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, then select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and click Next to continue.
Click Install to begin the installation.
When prompted to restart the server, select No, and click Finish.
To configure the network, click in sequential order: Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, and select New Connection Wizard to set up the network connection.
To configure network protocols, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network connections window, and click Properties.
To join a domain, click Start, Control Panel, System, click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
To install the ATI RN50/ ES1000 video device driver, complete the following steps:
Go to MIGR-4JTS2T, select System x3550 from the list, click the ATI ES 1000 AKA RN50 video driver for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (32 and x64), and then click the file link. .
When the Terms and Conditions window opens, choose one of the following options:
If you click I agree and the Use Download Director is checked (the default), the .zip file is saved to a location that you specify. When you are prompted to launch the file, select No, and then go to step 3.
If you clear the Use Download Director check box, and click I agree, the File Download window opens. Click Save. The Zip file is saved to a local directory. Go to step 3.
Locate and right-click the Zip file, and then select Extract All.
Click Next, select a location to extract the device driver, then click Next.
Leave «Show extracted files» checked, and click Finish. A window will open showing the extracted files.
Click Setup.exe to run the downloaded executable file.
In the Welcome window, click Next.
In the License Agreement window, read the license agreement, and then click Yes.
Click Express.
Select No, I will restart my computer later, and click Finish.
To install the IBM system board device drivers, complete the following steps:
Go to MIGR-4JTS2T, and select System x3550 from the list. Locate and click the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility, then click the executable file link.
When the Terms and Conditions window opens, choose one of the following options:
If you click I agree and the Use Download Director is checked (the default), the .exe file is saved to a location that you specify. When you are prompted to launch the file, select Yes, and then go to step 3.
If you clear the Use Download Director check box, and click I agree, the File Download window opens. Click Save. The .exe file is saved to a local directory. Double-click the .exe file to run it.
In the Welcome window, click Next.
In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, and click Yes to agree.
At the Readme information, click Next.
After the device drivers are installed, click Finish (restarts the server).
