Thunderbird
C:\Users\ \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\
(Import all eml files from a directory) (Just from the directory).

Importing Email Account Settings From Windows Live

When Windows Mail gains the «Live» moniker, you need not lose your old emails.
Importing Windows Mail folders and the messages therein is easy in Windows Live Mail, and you can copy your email account settings, too.
Import Mail and Account Settings from Windows Mail in Windows Live Mail
To import your Windows Mail email accounts, folders and messages in Windows Live Mail:
- Start Windows Mail.
- Select Tools | Accounts. from the menu.
- Highlight the desired email account.
- Click Export.
- Click Save to export the settings to a .iaf file named after the account in your Documents folder. Choose a network drive or portable medium to transfer settings from one computer to another.
- Close Windows Mail.
- Open Windows Live Mail.
- Select Tools | Accounts. from the menu. You may have to hold down the Alt key to see the menu.
- Click Import.
- Highlight the .iaf file you just saved in Windows Mail.
- Click Open.
- Click Close.
- Now select File | Import | Messages. from the menu.
- Make sure Windows Mail is selected.
- Click Next >.
- Click Next > again. To import mail from another computer, copy the entire Windows Mail store folder first and use the Browse. button to find it.
- Choose specific folders to import under Select folders: or leave All folders selected to import all Windows Mail messages.
- Click Next >.
- Click Finish. The imported mail will appear under Storage folders in the Windows Live Mail folder list.
Considerations
Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are no longer supported by Microsoft. If you have the option, upgrade to the Mail app in Windows 10, use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook.com for messages, instead.
WLM reached end-of-life and is no longer supported as of January 2017.
How to Import Windows Mail or Outlook Emails Into Gmail
Migrate your emails into Gmail with these simple steps
It’s possible to import your emails into Gmail from another email service from within Windows Mail or Microsoft Outlook. For example, if you have messages in Outlook that you want to copy over to Gmail, all you have to do is select them and copy them into your Gmail account.
Instructions in this article apply the desktop versions of Windows Mail and Outlook for Windows 10.
How to Import Other Emails Into Gmail
To migrate emails from other accounts into Gmail, you must first set up both accounts in the email client of your choice (e.g., Windows Mail or Outlook). Be sure to use the Gmail IMAP settings when setting up that account. You might also want to make a new folder in Gmail specifically for your imported messages.
It is also possible to copy messages into Gmail from another Gmail account.
Windows 10 Mail
To move messages between accounts in Windows Mail:
Open the email account that has the emails you want to migrate to Gmail.
Select any messages you want to copy to Gmail.
Hold down the Shift key as you make your selection to choose multiple messages at once. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A to select all emails in a folder.
Hold down the Ctrl key, then click-and-drag the highlighted messages on top of your Gmail account in the left pane to reveal a list of folders. Drop the messages into your Gmail folder of choice.
If you don’t hold down Ctrl, the emails will be moved into Gmail instead of copied.
Another way to copy emails into Gmail is to right-click the highlighted message and select Move, and then pick a folder from your Gmail account.
If all the messages you’ve imported into Gmail are marked as unread, you can quickly mark them as read to avoid having them clutter up your Gmail account.
Outlook for Windows 10
The process for moving messages between accounts is the same in Outlook, but the interface in a little different:
Open the email account that has the emails you want to migrate to Gmail.
Select any messages you want to copy to Gmail.
Hold down the Shift key as you make your selection to choose multiple messages at once. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + A to select all emails in a folder.
Hold down the Ctrl key, then click-and-drag the highlighted messages into a folder under your Gmail account in the left pane.
If you don’t hold down Ctrl, the emails will be moved into Gmail instead of copied.
Another way to copy emails into Gmail is to right-click the highlighted message and select Move > Copy to Folder, and then pick a folder from your Gmail account.
How Does This Work?
So long as your Gmail account is set up to communicate with the Gmail IMAP server, anything you do to Gmail on your computer will sync with the online version at Gmail.com. As a result, any emails you copy to Gmail from your other accounts will be uploaded to your online version of Gmail. The next time you read your Gmail messages from the Gmail mobile app or website, you’ll see those same messages that used to be stored only in Outlook or Windows Mail.
Though not as smooth, an alternative method is to use Thunderbird. To do that, you have to first import the messages from Outlook or Windows Mail into Thunderbird and then copy the Thunderbird messages into Gmail.
Aside from manually copying all new messages into Gmail each time they come in, you can also set up your email client to forward messages to Gmail automatically or configure Gmail to check mail from your other account(s).
Import emails from Windows Live Mail to Outlook 2016
Hi Microsoft Community,
I would like to know how to to do the following:
I have already exported my emails from Windows Live Mail which was running Windows 7. I now have a new Windows 10 system with Outlook 2016. How do I import my old emails to my new system? I think I have exported them as .eml files. Do they need to be .pst files? How would I achieve this?

Hi Microsoft Community,
I still seem unable to do this. I have two laptops. One with Win7 and Windows Live Mail (WLM) and no Outlook installed. My new laptop with Win10 and Outlook 2016 installed.
«To complete the steps, make sure that you have Microsoft Outlook installed with an email profile created.» Do I need Outlook installed on both laptops?
I get the following error message when exporting my emails from WLM to Microsoft Exchange as advised. » The Export could not be performed. An error occurred while initializing MAPI.»
Any suggestions on how to get this resolved?

The error message that you’ve encountered maybe caused by Windows Live Mail cannot find the correct path directory. So, the first thing we suggest is to make Outlook your default email program.
Also, try this, copy the entire directory of dbx files to the Desktop of your computer. In Windows Live Mail, use File > Import > Messages and point to that directory. Please make sure the files are NOT read only.
If still didn’t work, don’t worry, we suggest you do this: File > Open & Export > Import/Export and then you should choose Import from another program or file from the list.
Feel free to post back if you need more help.

Importing email from Windows Live Mail on Windows 7 to new computer with Windows 10
I was using a computer with Windows 7 and used Live Mail. I exported my old email and contact to folders as per instructions I located online. I now have a new computer with Windows 10. I am using the Mail app for my email account. I want to import my old emails to my new computer. I read that there is no way to import contacts. Is there an app on Windows 10 to import old email from old machines? Is there a way to import the old emails to the Windows 10 Mail app?

To address you concern, could you tell us which format you exported your old mails? You can try to use Outlook mail app to import the old mails to Windows 10.

Thank you for replying to my post. I exported my email files to a folder, they are .FOL files. From what I have learned, Windows 10 mail does not have a feature to allow imported old mail files. I would like to archive may old files for reading and printing. I was thinking about trying Outlook to import the old mail but was not sure if that would interfere with my current email using Windows 10 mail.
If I could use Outlook for my old emails only and not to send or receive new emails that would work for me. I am still shaking my head wondering why Microsoft did not include a method to import old mail and contacts from former Windows machines into Windows 10 mail.
