Do we say «in the window» or «on the window»?
I have read an article which writes «Back in 2003, 25 000 people flocked to see an image of the Virgin Mary ON a hospital window in Boston»
Then I looked up the word «window» in my collocation dictionary», in all the entry I just saw «IN the window», not «ON».
so which way is proper English or both are acceptable? Thank you very much.

«On» the window means something visible on or attached to the glass, like a window decal or a plastic film. «In» the window refers to the space. A cat can sit in the window, you can see items for sale in a store window, you can hang curtains or blinds in a window.
Both are proper English. It just depends on which relationship something is to the window, either on the surface of the glass or in the window opening or visible through it.
In the window, usually referring to something that you can see behind the glass of the window.
On the Window would be like rain physically hitting the window such as «the rain was falling on the window»
But if the image of the virgin mary is a part of the window then you could possibly use either of them. Like a window at a church with the image of the virgin mary «on» the window.
Physically attached to the window glass or frame, image projected onto the glass or other reflection and so forth —> ON the window.
Visible through the window —> IN or THROUGH the window. Special case only used for something viewed from within a building to the outside, OUT the window (all three usages work for this, but this only works for the special case). This usage of «out» is a shortened form of «outside.» I don’t think it is formal usage and it may be regional. However «Look out [through] the window» is standard.
Resting on the inside sill (animals, plants, decorations) —> IN the window or ON the windowsill. «The cat was sitting [framed, or by analogy displayed] in the window.» «Framed» might actually be used in the sentence. «There was a cat
Forming a display or part of one intended to be viewed through the window (shop displays, prostitutes in Amsterdam), or decorations attached to the glass or hanging from the frame and visible through the glass —> IN the window. «She had several small stained-glass pieces hanging in the window, attached to suction cups on the glass.»
To me, if something is physically on the window, like dirt, or Christmas stickers, or a fly, etc., I think it’s «on the window.» If it’s not physically on it, but you see something through it, I think it’s «in the window.» If the image of the Virgin looked like it was on the glass, I would say it was «on the window.» But, that’s just my opinion.

Перевод песни Lookin’ through the window (Jackson 5)
Lookin’ through the window
Гляжу в окошко
Lookin’ through the window
Lookin’ through the window
Lookin’ through the window
Look.. look.. look through the window
Lookin’ through the window
Lookin’ through the windows
The window to your heart (oh baby yeah)
I can see its cloudy
The rain’s about to start
Lookin’ through the windows
(lookin’ through the windows)
It seems I’ve caused your fears (yea yea yea)
And that little doubt girl
(and your little doubt girl)
And now it’s bringin’ tears
(and its bringin’ tears)
Remember.
Just remember what ever makes
you feel that way
Don’t you worry ’cause I’m gonna stay
Right by your side (by your side)
To keep on lookin’ through the windows
Lookin’ in your eyes
(Ooh lookin’ in your eyes, eyes, eyes)
(Lookin, lookin’ in your eyes, eyes, eyes)
Lookin’ through the windows
(lookin’ through the windows)
Seems like the only way (yeah)
I can know your feelings
If you still love me today
Remember.
Just remember what ever makes
you feel that way
Don’t you worry ’cause I’m gonna stay
Right by your side
To keep on lookin’ through the windows
Lookin’ in your eyes
(Ooh, lookin’ in your eyes, eyes, eyes)

Lookin’ through the windows
The window to your heart
