External Hard Drive Issue

As per the description, I understand that you are experiencing issue with when you plug in 500 GB external Seagate barracuda hard drive, you receive a message: initio default controller in the computer.

I certainly understand the inconvenience caused and will try my best to help you.

There is a possibility that the issue might have occurred due to corruptions in the hard drive.

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1:

Run inbuilt Hardware and Device troubleshooter and check if it works. Follow the steps given below.

Note: If your computer is having problems with a recently installed device or other hardware, try using the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to fix the problem. It checks for common issues and makes sure that any new device or hardware attached to your computer was installed correctly.

Press Windows Key +R, type Control Panel.

Type troubleshooting in the search bar, click on troubleshooting.

Click on Hardware and Sound, click on Hardware and Devices.

Follow the steps from the wizard to run the troubleshooter.

If the issue persists, please follow method 2.

Method 2:

How to change Drive Letter in Windows 8.1 , please follow the steps in the link given below.

  • Press Windows key + R to open run box.
  • Type Diskmgmt.msc in the box, and then hit the Enter key to open Disk Management.
  • Once Disk Management is launched, right-click on the drive whose drive letter you wish to change and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths option. This action will open Change Drive Letter and Paths dialog box.

For instance, if you want to change the drive letter of a drive from ‘R’ to ‘S’, you need to right-click on drive ‘R’.

  • Here, click Change button. Note that if the Change button is greyed out or not available, you need to select the drive letter first.
  • Select an available drive letter from the drop-down menu and then click OK button to change the drive letter.
  • Click on the Yes button when you see “Some programs that rely on drive letters might not run correctly. Do you want to continue” warning message to change the drive letter.

Also, check the status of the Drive on the computer using “Device Manager” and later right click to uninstall it, then restart the computer and check if it helps.

In addition:

I would suggest to plug in your USB drive that gives this problem so that Initio Combo Device Class shows up in. Please follow the steps given below.

Press “Windows +X” Keys on the keyboard.

Go to Device Manager and select Initio Combo Device Class.

Double click on Initio Default Controller, then Properties/ Drivers and disable it.

Unplug the USB drive and plug it back in again and it should be recognized as a drive with letter.

SOLVED: Asus external Blu-Ray/DVD external drive not working in Windows 10

I have an external Blu-Ray/DVD external drive for my Windows laptop. Specifically, it is the Asus SBW-06D2x-U here: https://www.asus.com/us/optical-drives-storage/

When I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, the external drive no longer worked. I could hear that its power was on, but the drive did not appear in “This PC” and neither did it appear in the Device Manager. It was as if the drive was completely invisible to Windows 10.

I found the solution here: http://superuser.com/questions/982116/windows-10-does-not-discover-dvd-device What follows is the info I got from there, rewritten for completely ignorant people (like me).

With the external drive plugged into the USB ports, open up the Device Manager (if you don’t know how, simply type “device manager” into the search box and click on it). First, look to see if the drive is listed there but with an exclamation mark next to it; if so, that’s a different problem and you’ll need to look somewhere else for the solution.

If your external drive is completely missing from Device Manager, look to see if there is an entry called “Initio Combo Device Class”. If so, see what happens if you unplug the external drive. If the “Initio Combo” thing disappears, then that’s the problem: Windows 10 is mistaking your Blu-Ray drive for this useless Initio thing. If you get rid of Initio, your computer will recognize your Blu-Ray drive properly. I do not know why this works, but it does.

OK, so follow these instructions TO THE LETTER.

  1. Plug your external drive back in, and “Intio Combo Device Class” should reappear in the Device Manager.
  2. Click on the little “>” next to it, and you should see something called “Initio Default Controller” appear underneath.
  3. Right-click on “Initio Default Controller” and click ‘Disable’ to turn it off.
  4. Now right-click on it again and click ‘Properties’.
  5. In the window that pops up click on the ‘Driver’ tab.
  6. Click on ‘Uninstall Device’, and then follow the instructions carefully to ensure that you do uninstall the drivers (IMPORTANT: you may need to click on a checkbox to confirm that you want to delete the driver software – don’t miss this step if so).
  7. Unplug the external drive from the USB ports.
  8. Shut down your computer (be sure to shut it down fully, don’t just restart it).
  9. With the computer powered off, plug in the external drive to the USB ports.
  10. Restart the computer and let it boot up.
  11. The drive should now work! It should appear in “This PC” and it should appear in “Device Manager” in the list of “DVD/CD-ROM drives”

До покупки нового корпуса все работало отлично. Впоследствии комп был пересобран, после чего и появились проблемы — и из-под XP, и из-под Windows 7 жесткие диски перестали определяться, появляется уведомление Initio Default Controller. В то же время на другом компьютере диски определяются без проблем.
Удаление из диспетчера устройств и повторный поиск, замена кабеля, замена БП не помогли, картина все та же. В чём может быть причина?
мат.плата — Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3

P.S.
— HDD питаются через USB (доп.питания нет)
— подключение через Y-кабель не помогает, к тому же не для всех HDD это возможно
— подключаю и в передние, и в задние порты USB — разницы никакой.

Так из-за корпуса и проблема. Сдаётся мне, что стойка шасси неверно установлена и замыкает на что-то на материнке.

В другом корпусе:

один диск продолжает определяться как Initio Default Controller,
другой — наименование модели отображается в диспетчере устройств, но на этом всё, просмотреть содержимое невозможно, в Total Commander буква диску присваивается, но если нажать на нее, пишет, что нет устройства.

К сожалению такое иногда бывает. Попробовали подключить хард к другому компьютеру? Что с ним произходит при этом? Как он отображается в Управление дисками (какая у него файловая система)?
Так как накопитель был отключен во время работы вероятнее всего он потерял файловую систему. Mожете попробовать запустить Linux Live CD, так как это распространенный способ восстановление потерянных разделов. Если в любой момент данные становятся доступными — я бы вам рекомендовал сделать бекап. Потом форматнуть диск и посмотреть работает ли он нормально.

Еще скажу, что если данные на диске очень нужны — лучше обратиться к специалистам по восстановлению (даю ссылку: http://support.wdc.com/recover. dc_lang=ru)
