How to record or stream MacOS audio output with live feedback using iShowU Audio Capture

There is no native way of recording a Mac’s output, so we are going to set up and install iShowU Audio Capture.

The result is going to be a virtual device, like a microphone, that “outputs your output”.

Note: if you don’t need to hear what you’re recording I recommend SoundFlower for its ease of use.

Installation and setup

1. Install iShowU Audio Capture

• If you’re on Catalina or later, you’ll need to accept the System Software from Shiny White Box Limited. It will be under Security and Privacy in your System Settings.

2. Once the installation finishes, you’ll have to restart your Mac. This allows the system to load the new kernel extension.

• If it worked, you should now have iShowU AudioCapture under the Sound-Output panel.

3. Go to Audio MIDI Setup

• Add a new Multi-Output Device.
• Tick iShowU Audio Capture and your audio output. In my case, it’s my headphones.
• Set the master device as your output device.

4. Under Sound se l ect the Multi-Output Device you created as your Output device. You will no longer be able to set the volume for this device, unfortunately.

5. Use iShowU Audio Capture as you would a microphone in any recording program on your Mac.

6. Have fun & profit!

So most of you know, to capture audio from a Mac you need an extension like Soundflower. But what most of you don’t know is that you can use another extension to capture audio. I present to you, iShowU Audio Capture!

CHECKLIST

• iShowU Audio Capture(duh): An extension used by iShowU Studio & iShowU Instant. It’s 101% free.
• Audio MIDI Setup: An audio utility. Comes with every version of Mac.

STEPS

1. Install iShowU Audio Capture(link in checklist) like you installed Soundflower.

2. (optional)Uninstall Soundflower.

3. Open Audio MIDI Setup. Click the «+» button at the bottom left of the window. Choose «Create Multi-Output Device».

4. Check the boxes for Built-in Output & iShowU Audio Capture in the «Use» column. Also check the box for Built-in Output in the «Drift Correction» column to prevent audio sync issues.

5. Open System Preferences, then go to Sound. In the Output section, select your newly created multi-output device.

6. Open OBS. Go to Settings, then Audio. Select iShowU Audio Capture as one of your Mic/Auxiliary Audio Device.

After this, you should be able to record & stream with audio. Enjoy!

Q: Why do you need to put the extension in Mic/Auxiliary Audio Device, not Desktop Audio Device?

A: In theory, Soundflower & iShowU Audio Capture are 2 different extensions. iShowU Audio Capture is a virtual mic while Soundflower is a virtual audio grabber. So any virtual mic goes into the Mic/Auxiliary Audio Device & any virtual audio grabber goes into Desktop Audio Device.

Q: Can you use this with Quicktime?

A: Absolutely! Just select iShowU Audio Capture in the Microphone section.

Q: Why does my video have no sound?

A: You opened the program you intended to record before switching to the Multi-Output Device. The device will only capture audio from any program opened after switching.

I’ve tried everything and simply can’t get OBS to read an audio signal from my Zoom Q2n camera (I get video just fine). I think I’ve done everything the video outlines, yet still. no audio from the camera (if it matters, I stream live music, so the singular sound source from my music mixer goes directly into the Zoom camera (and it reads the audio signal fine, thus it stands to reason if the Zoom is supplying the visual media into OBS just fine, it should the audio as well).

I’ve set up Multi-Output Device in Audio Devices setting on my Mac (I’ve tried making the Master Device both iShow and Built-in but neither works). In OBS Settings I have the mic/aux set to iShowU. Still nothing. I’m at a total loss and I’ve spent about two days trying to figure this out. Help, please!

I’m using OBS to record programmes from a set top box. I’m using an iSolem HDMI splitter and a Zaycue Capture device. I’ve got perfect video but having set up the audio via iShareU exactly as shown, I’ve got nothing but silence. Any suggestions?

Ok so I did literally everything click by click the exact same way that you did and the guy in the video did and when I go to OBS, the bars that show that it’s picking up sound still do not work. I know for a fact that it is capturing Desktop audio because I used Quicktime to record a video and it was able to capture the sounds from the game and the screen itself. The only issue is that OBS is still not detecting any desktop sounds.

Edit: I streamed on Twitch and my viewers said they couldn’t hear any audio either from my mic or from the game even while using iShareU Audio Capture having been set up as the video shows.

I followed this guide https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/os-x-capture-audio-with-ishowu-audio-capture.505/ and OBS works correctly. I can record/stream to Youtube or Twitch. However now on my Mac I can’t adjust my volume anymore. So when I adjust my press my volume up/down keys, all I get is this:

I have a Macbook Air 2015 and my OS is Mojave 10.14.5

Hello,
I tried the method described here. The installation procedure is carried out until the end, successfully . but it is as if nothing were installed! I can’t find a program, I don’t find any trace of drivers in «audio» or even in the Midi program!

I can’t ear my desktop sounds in the recorded desktop video!!

MacBook Pro, macOS Mojave 10.14.6, 2,8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3
OBS 23.2.1 (64bit)

How do I proceed? Thanks.

Hello, I’m a newbie and trying to use OBS to stream live video and audio. It’s great to be on the forum and have somewhere to ask questions about OBS.

I’m using a Macbook Pro with OBS and I’m using Digital Performer to bring in some external audio and microphones with a ZOOM H4N Pro as my USB interface.

Both Digital Performer and OBS are running on my Macbook Pro. I’d like to send my stereo output mix from Digital Performer into OBS, but OBS is not recognizing Digital Performer as an input for an audio source. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m a noob also. I puttered around with iShowU but had no more success than anyone else. I got in touch with the developer and tried a newer app called iShowU Instant which has problems of its own.’

I scrapped the whole thing and went to rogueamoeba’s Loopback. Much easier.
