It’s fast, it’s clean, and it’s Dark Mode! The Jira Cloud app is now available on the Mac App Store with macOS Catalina.

It’s been more than 30 years since I switched on my first ever Macintosh computer in the mid-1980’s, so the launch of Jira Cloud for Mac is especially exciting.

Four years ago, we set out to build the best Jira experience on the go with our first iPhone app. It’s been a huge success, with many customers sharing how much they like its speed and ease of use. So when Apple presented their cross-platform vision last year, we couldn’t wait to get started. We saw great potential for a Jira Mac app that’d be incredibly fast and fully integrated with Mac desktops and laptops that many of us work with every day.

Earlier this year, at Apple’sWorldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), we revealed that Jira Cloud would be coming to Mac. And in just three months, we built the app to take the Jira user experience to a new level for our large number of Mac users.

Snappier than ever before

Jira Cloud for Mac is a snappy and simple way for software developers to work with tasks and update their team on progress. The most common actions users take in Jira – managing the backlog, viewing the roadmap, flipping between projects – load faster than ever with the new Mac app. We’re continuing to work hard to make Jira Cloud faster (more on that here), and the Mac app will deliver an incredibly fast user experience.

Fully integrated with MacOS, featuring Dark Mode

Jira can be used right next to Xcode or any other development tools on Mac. We also know there are many Dark Mode fans out there, so we added that too, making those late nights easier on the eyes. The app also tightly integrates with all the power of macOS, including push notifications, keyboard shortcuts, search, drag and drop, and much more.

The best place to track your team’s progress is on your board, which will look beautiful on large Mac screens that give you a full overview of what your team is working on. With the app, you’ll be able to use drag and drop to move cards on kanban and scrum boards in Jira Software. And you’ll be able to seamlessly hand over a board or issue between your iOS device and Mac.

Navigate to work with ease

The faster teams can find work, the faster it gets done. The always-visible sidebar surfaces quick links to projects, commonly used filters, and a notifications center so you can find what you’re looking for, quickly.

And when it comes to seeing all work in flight at a glance, Roadmaps brings the big picture to your Mac desktop or laptop. Ratings and Reviews

It’s ok, but awkward and limited

I had this installed for about a week, using it daily. It’s ok, but feels like an iPad app ported to the Mac (which, of course, it is). Like most mobile applications, it has a limited subset of functionality from the web app, so I have to return to the web application to do certain things — including odd things like pasting a URL into a comment when editing it.

The biggest problem with the app though, and why I had to delete it, is that when you have this app installed and you then open Jira in Safari, Jira in Safari displays a constant banner across the top of the page allowing you to open the issue you’re looking at in the Jira app. The only way I could find to remove the annoying, space-taking banner was to delete the app on my Mac. (Note that I’m not sure if the banner is Atlassian’s doing, or if that’s a Safari «feature»).

If I were Atlassian, I’d drop this app and work on making Jira Cloud a Progressive Web Application. That would give us a cross-platform, installable, fully-featured Jira.

Needs Improvement

First, huge shoutout to the Atlassian team for making this application happen, and being one of the first iOS apps on the Mac. That being said, this application has a long way to go before it can truly be considered a premium, 5-star application. Most of all there doesn’t seem to be the polish of a normal Mac application. When clicking on the «Search issues» button on the left side, it brings up a whole other panel to search. So if you click it and start typing quickly, it won’t capture any input, which makes the application feel really slow. You also can’t resize the side panel by dragging. Also, clicking on a status to change it, should display a dropdown, not another panel to choose the new status. The preferences page also feels like it should be a seperate window (like all other macOS applications), as opposed to a view on top of the normal application. You also can’t hover over someone’s avatar icon on the board to see the name of the person who it’s assigned to. And finally, no support for Jira Server makes it a deal breaker for many. Please focus on making this application feel more like a true macOS application.

Funcational, but limited

First — in terms of speed the app is a far better experience than the bulky web interface. The web experience alone is a reason for me to look for an «alternative» solution. In fact I’ve considered moving my whole team from Jira just to save time we spend waiting for the slow bulky web interface to load . anyways. about the app.

The app is much faster that the web, which makes it «awesome». The problem is that some of the items needed for planning aren’t added here. Roadmaps are visible, but you can’t edit them. I often find myself going over to the web interface to solve problems that can’t be done in the app. In fact I deleted the app on more than one occassion because it also interferes with the web interface (if you use Safari) with the «use the app» banner. So all in all, faster than the web interface, but isn’t able to do everything.

This is a tutorial on how to set-up Jira Software Service on MacOS.

When I got my licenses for Jira Software I was originally having trouble configuring it with my Mac.This is tutorial is to guide fellow developers set-up Jira Software Server on their Mac. My objective to is to create a detailed step-by-step guideline to make the process the least confusing as possible. Let’s proceed !

Install or Update JAVA

Verify Working Version of JAVA

To check you have a working version of Java, in command line run java -version

A working version of Java will output the following:

Downloading and Installing JAVA

Otherwise, if you do NOT have a working version of Java you must download and install Java.

1. To install Java , click on the following Java SE Development Kit 8
2. Accept License Agreement , and download the Mac OS X under the ‘Product/ File Description’ Category
3. Double click the .dmg downloaded file and once the installer has loaded click install .
4. After installation, close the current terminal and open a new terminal. Run the command, java -version . Your output should be something similar to the oupit above for a working version of Java .

Setting JAVA Enviroment Variable

Open up terminal, which will be by default in your home directory.

In terminal run, ls -a , which will output your hidden files. Then open the file .bash_profile .

If the file .bash_profile does NOT exist you can simply create one by running the command touch .bash_profile

Open, .bash_profile , and modify to set JAVA_HOME

Downloading JIRA for MacOS

1. To download Jira Software Server, click on the following Download Jira Software
2. Set Operating System option for OS X and then click on Download
3. Click on the downloaded zip file to unzip the folder.
4. Move the unzipped folder to Desktop .

Set JIRA Home Directory

1. Inside your unziped folder go to the location , user > Desktop > atlassian-jira-software-7.12.1-standalone > atlassian-jira > WEB-INF > classes
2. Inside the classes folder look for the file jira-application.properties .
3. Make a new folder in Desktop called JiraHome .
4. Now open the file .jira-application.properties , and set the path jira.home to the path of JiraHome folder.

.jira-application.properties file should look like this:

Note: When you start JIRA Server files and logs will be created inside the JiraHome folder.

JIRA TOMCAT Server

Start Shell Script

Locate the start.sh file.

Open up terminal and go to user > Desktop > atlassian-jira-software-7.12.1-standalone > atlassian-jira >

To make sure you’re in the correct working directory, run the following on terminal:

Inside the bin directory, run sh starup.sh

When you run sh startup.sh , the following should occur:

Shutdown Shell Script

To stop the TOMCAT Server , inside the bin directory, run sh shutdown.sh

Start Using JIRA

As previously mentioned, to use JIRA you must run the Start Shell Script sh startup.sh

Now open up your browser, and type localhost:8080

It should render, the Atlassian Logo with a message displaying Atlassian Jira is starting up

First Time Users

1. Once Jira has started up, it will redirect you to the Jira setup screen.
2. Recommend, clicking on Set it up for me and click Continue to MyAtlassian
3. The next screen, will ask you to select your product in our case we select Jira Software and then click select under the Licence Type Jira Software (Server). Proceed, by clicking on Generate License .
4. You will be prompted at the Administrator account setup . Complete all the fields. Then click Next .
5. Finishing your setup will show up.
6. Let’s get started
