Three ways to set wireless interface to Monitor mode and Managed mode

You can use the following command to set wireless interface to Monitor mode and Managed mode on any Linux distro. The only requirement is availability wireless adapter that supports monitor mode. This one is recommended.

1. How to enable monitor mode using iw

You should check whether the operating system is able to recognize your Wi-Fi card. In addition, you need to know the name of the wireless interface.

Get to know the wireless interface name:

As you can see, the name of my wireless interface is wlan0. In addition, you can see that it is in managed mode.

To set wireless interface to Monitor mode with iw you can use the following command sequence:

Where IFACE replace with actual name of your wireless interface. In may example:

Then check the status of you wireless interface one more time:

As you can see, now type monitor. Note: the name of interface is not changed by this method.

To return wireless interface in Managed mode with iw you can use the following command sequence:

Where IFACE replace with actual name of your wireless interface. In may example:

2. How to enable monitor mode using Airmon-ng

Again, we should get information about our wireless interface:

The name of interface is wlan0.

Checking for interfering processes

Before putting a card into monitor mode, it will automatically check for interfering processes. It can also be done manually by running the following command:

This command stops network managers then kill interfering processes left:

At last, we start monitor mode:

As you can see, it created a monitor mode interface called wlan0mon.

Disable monitor mode

Don’t forget to restart the Network Manager. It is usually done with the following command:

3. How to enable monitor mode using iwconfig

As usual, start from checking interface name:

The network interface with wireless extension is called wlan0.

Enable monitor mode:

Disable monitor mode:

NetworkManager prevents monitor mode

If NetworkManager restarts automatically after each kill, and it pretends monitor mode, you can stop it manually:

In Kali Linux, BlackArch, Ubuntu, Linux Mint:

Note: when you stop NetworkManager, your Internet access disappears!

Using Monitor Mode in Kali Linux 2020

3 Ways to Use Kali Linux Monitor Mode

If you have the wireless adapter that supports Monitor Mode, then you can easily set the wireless interface. The following sections list some of the ways that you can use Monitor Mode in Kali Linux.

1. Enable Monitor Mode Using iw

First, we will take a look at the use of the iw Wi-Fi configuration tool. It is used for configuring Wi-Fi in particular and can be more powerful than other tools. You might have already used iw for several other purposes, for example, to obtain information about your Wi-Fi network. In fact, this tool can even give you more information about different commands. The iw list gives you much more information about wireless wlan0, interface modes, HT, bit rates, scanning, etc.

The first step is to check the interface information. You can do so by entering the following:

The output will look like the following window:

To access the traffic of other people, you will have to switch this over to Monitor Mode. You can switch iw to Monitor Mode by entering the commands given below:

IFACE replaced the actual name, as shown:

The next step is to check the wireless interface one more time by entering the following command:

The output of the aforementioned commands can be seen in the window above.

Wondering how to get back to the Managed Mode? To do so, enter the following commands:

IFACE replaced the actual name, as shown:

2. Enable Monitor Mode Using airmon-ng

If you have already tried enabling Monitor Mode using iw and failed, then another method you can use to enable Monitor Mode is through airmon-ng.

The first step is to get information about your wireless interface. Do so by issuing the following command:

The output of the above command is as follows:

You will want to kill any process that can interfere with using the adapter in Monitor Mode. To do so, you can use a program called airmon-ng, simply entering the following commands:

Now, you should enable Monitor Mode without any interference.

Wlan0mon has now been created.

Use the following commands to disable Monitor Mode and return to Managed Mode:

Enter the following command to restart the network manager:

3. Enable Monitor Mode Using iwconfig

As in previous sections, check your interface name via the following command:

The next step is to enable Monitor Mode. Do so by entering the following commands:

how to enable monitor mode in kali linux using the IP and iw commands Almost Any attack on WiFi begins with the transfer of the WiFi card to monitor mode (tracking mode). and here comes the question of How to put wireless adapter in monitor mode, the answer is simple.

To enable WiFi monitor mode you can use the Airmon-ng tool , A Better way is using the ip and iw commands
with “manual” way of transferring to monitor mode the interface will keep its own name so if it was wlan0 it will stay the same wlan0 that’s because Airmon-ng create a virtual interface when it start monitor mode, so to begin let’s look at the name of the wireless interface:

And translate it into monitor mode:

Good method – never let me down. But, it turns out, both the ifconfig command and the iwconfig command are now considered obsolete. ifconfig is no longer installed on the system by default, and once the same will happen with iwconfig – it is only a matter of time.
In order not to sit “on the old stuff”, of course, alternatives were found.

Now we look at the interface name like this:

And put it into monitor mode like this (replace wlan0 with the name of your wireless interface):

We check success with:

now we will look at the interface name itself with a wireless extension and put it into monitor mode (if you have only one wireless interface):

If instead of changing the real interface you want to create a virtual monitor in monitor mode, then to create a wireless interface in monitor mode called mon0, you need to do this:

My commands creates a virtual interface, but it does not translate into monitor mode. If you have a similar situation, then do this:

To remove a virtual interface:

Under certain conditions, NetworkManager may not allow the WiFi adapter to transfer to monitor mode. Moreover, the wireless card already transferred to the monitor mode can be returned to the controlled mode. Therefore, it is recommended to disable NetworkManager when testing for the penetration of wireless networks.

In Kali Linux and BlackArch, this is done like this:

Kali Linux 2020

Kali Linux 2020

Kali Linux

Kali Linux.
