Knights and Merchants on Linux and MacOS
It is possible — and not too hard — to run KaM on alternate operating systems. Here’s a quick guide. In case of any problems not described below feel free to write on the forums.
Linux
Short answer: use Steam version or install Wine.
Longer answer: There is a Linux version of TPR+Remake r6720 available on Steam. For less experienced Linux users, Steam version is recommended for now, but you can also use Wine (which is what the Steam version is actually using), or Wine helpers like PlayOnLinux or Lutris — both TSK/TPR and Remake should work flawlessly, so you may install your GOG/CD version of TPR and then Remake.
With Remake, in case of sound problems you might want to make sure you have OpenAL 32bit library installed (ie. Arch Linux does not install it with Wine by default). Depending on your desktop environment/window manager, you might run into one of these weird problems that I had in the past:
- after Alt+Tabbing to another window, you can’t click on buttons in KaM — just Alt-Tab to another window and back again. I believe this happens on some DEs/WMs when you have second Remake window (ie. when using map editor) opened.
- you might have problems with fullscreen mode, so try windowed if some part of the screen is missing
MacOS
As I do not have much experience here, I am leaving a link to the Remake’s site which explains how to install TPR and Remake: Mac OSX and Linux — KaM Remake. In general, using MacOS versions of Wine helpers (ie. PlayOnMac ) should just work. KaM TPR on Steam for MacOS — from what I know — will work flawlessly, but does not include Remake.
Historical port of TSK for Linux/MacOS
For those curious — there were native ports of Knights and Merchants: The Shattered Kingdom, done for both MacOS X and Linux — you may still find links to Linux demo and Mac OS patches in our Downloads section. These versions are very dated and from what I know include only TSK, what’s more, running them on a modern operating system is likely to be a challenge. You may find it interesting that apparently the «historical version» of KaM on Steam contains something called «KaM HD», which looks like it was based off Linux native port, that had some improvements over the original TSK.

sudo ./knights_linux.run —target knights —noexec
После выполнения этой команды в директории с knights_linux.run появляется директория knights с распакованными файлами игры. Нужно зайти в эту папку в консоли и выполнить (при этом нужно убедиться что glibc -2.1 у вас стоит)
sudo ./setup.data/bin/Linux/x86/setup
После выполнения этой команды запустится консольный setup knights and merchants.

You have arrived at the downloads section of the website. This section is devoted in trying to archive all official files released for the game and it also includes unofficial patches/translations or tools that have been made in order to ease modifying the original game.
KaM Remake
Knights and Merchants: Remake is an unofficial mod which takes the Knights and Merchants gameplay to modern computers, along with internet multiplayer and lots of new maps and additions — it is a must-have if you ever played this game. Requires KaM: TPR to be installed.
This is download link for the Remake mod (requires The Peasants Rebellion to be installed), based on new custom engine, it fixes many problems the old games had (resolution, multiplayer desync, etc.) while adding a lot of new stuff to play with — be it maps, special gamemodes, flawless multiplayer with spectators and many more. |
This is an unofficial patch to the game developed to fix many of the longstanding bugs that were never fixed by any of the official patches. It also strives to improve the new campaign and make it feel more like it was a part of the original game, as the campaign had multiple shortcomings when compared to the original campaign. For more information, please see the this section. |
This tool allows you to check relative wares proportions in KaM Remake r6720. The original source can be found on GitHub |
Font Editor r799 (Krom and Lewin) This tool allows one to modify the font files used by the games. It allows one to export the graphics into a grid and you can then edit these using e.g. paint. Other font properties can also be altered, e.g. line height. Note that the default palette for some fonts can cause errors when importing due to overlapping colors. |
Graphics Editor 1.3.1 (Harold) This is an editor that actually allows you to modify the graphics that are used by the game. It works pretty well for what it does, unfortunately it suffers similar problems as the font editor where some colors are doubled in a palette and as such may end up giving strange animating effects to your graphics as these entries are reserved for animating graphics. |
Mission Editor 0.9 (Lewin) An awesome editor which allows you to edit the DAT files that contain the mission data (units, buildings, mission goals etc.) for the game. It is pretty easy to use as there’s a graphical display of what is going on and if all else fails, it also allows you to edit the script directly when fine tuning is needed. |
Object Editor 0.4.3 (Merchator) This is a pretty nifty tool as it allows you to edit the stats of civilians, soldiers and buildings. It allows you to rebalance the soldiers to fit your needs, or if you’re annoyed by the fish running out, you could change it so that you receive plenty of fish on each trip that the fisherman makes. |
Terrain Editor 0.6e (Krom) Another awesome editor that when used together with Lewin’s Mission Editor allows you to create completely new maps for the game. This particular editor allows you to alter the terrain of maps and also add scenery objects like trees or rocks. It also has some preliminary support for viewing roads and buildings if loading a DAT file. |
Text Editor 0.8.2 (Lewin) Oh and did I mention that there’s yet another pretty awesome tool? This one allows you to edit the LIB files completely to suit your needs, that means you can modify or alternatively add new messages to these files because no map is complete without a few encouraging/eerie messages to keep your spirits/fear up. |
