What better way to add some embellishments to your songs than with an orchestral plugin? Even better if its free, right?

Orchestral samples, and samples in general, have come a long way.

They were practically unusable back in the day, but now, even though you can hear the difference between a sample software and the real deal, they sound astoundingly similar.

I love finding free software that actually works, so in this post I will go into each of the ones I found and tried, this way you won’t have to do any of the research and try the ones that sucked, like I did!

Best Free Full Orchestra VSTs

While every single one on this list is a good plugin overall, there are two which stand out.

Layers by Orchestral Tools

Layers is an ultra realistic orchestral sample library that features a full orchestra, Brass-, Woodwinds-, and Strings sections.

You can choose between a couple different mic positions and it also features different articulations; different chord types, staccato and sustain unison, and more.

In total, the sample pack is about 17GB and runs on Windows 10 and Mac OS.

Lastly, Layers works with Orchestral Tools’ SINE Player.

Total Composure Orchestra (Windows, Mac, Linux)

Total Composure Orchestra is a full orchestral sample library created using only samples in the public domain.

Total Composure is the first to offer such a library exclusively for the Kontakt format; making use of Kontakt’s scripting capabilities to greatly enhance the playability, realism, and functionality of these public domain samples.

This is a fantastic plugin, it comes with a huge array of instruments from pianos, to brass instruments, strings and percussion.

One bad thing about this plugin is that it runs both on Kontakt Player, which is free, and the full version of Kontakt, but on Kontakt player you can only use the samples for about 30 min before it stops working.

If you want to be able to use them to their fullest extent, you will need to purchase Kontakt.

Spitfire LABS

I mentioned Spitfire in a couple of my posts simply because they have some of my top recommendations as far as free plugins go.

LABS is basically a collection of free VST and AU plugins that not only sound fantastic, but that is also being updated consistently, with new plugins being added over time.

Here you will find great-sounding samples of any orchestral instrument you can think of.

The Free Orchestra by Project Sam

Project Sam is behind Symphobia, which is one of the best-rated libraries for film scoring, video games and TV, and they created the Free Orchestra library which contains bits and pieces of all of their paid products.

What struck me the most about this free library is how great it sounds as soon as you load it up; there is little to no tweaking required.

Now, it runs on KONTAKT (6.2. or higher), but luckily it works in the free version which can be beneficial to you if you’re interested in using KONTAKT but don’t want to purchase the premium version just yet.

Parameters such as envelope controls, effects, octaver, and reverse make this library very versatile to use.

All in all, if you’re a beginner tipping their toes into the whole orchestral world, this entry level library could just be what you need.

DSK Overture Orchestra (Windows)

DSK Overture is a full orchestral sample VST plugin.

It gives you the ability to choose between 40 different instruments and play 4 of those instruments in the same instance, through MIDI.

The included instruments are; Acoustic Piano, Harpsichord, Bassoon, Celesta, Glockenspiel, Vibes, Harp, Flute, Piccolo, English Horns, Oboe, Clarinet, French Horn, Trumpet, Church Organ, Trombone, Tuba, Cello, Contra Bass, Viola, Violin, Orchestra Drum Kit, Full Sections.

Honestly, what makes this plugin great is the variety of instruments, since there is no shortage of them, plus they all sound pretty damn good!

BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover by Spitfire Audio

Here’s another great addition by Spitfire.

The BBC Symphonic Orchestra Discover actually sells for $49, but you can fill out a form and they will send it to you after 14 days for completely free.

This library is clearly aimed at beginners since it is very simple to use and straight-forward, plus it already comes premixed into one mix signal which gives you less control over it, but makes things easier if you’re just starting out.

It features a total of 33 instruments and 47 techniques, and thanks to Spitfire’s new mode switching technology, you can share and collaborate with fellow composers, regardless of which edition they own.

Kontakt Library Maker For Macbook

One Track orchestra is primarily a sketching tool, meant to be used for songwriting and recording demos and aimed mostly at beginners and songwriters who need a simple tool to create and record music.

Therefore, the sound quality and usability aren’t the best ones out there.

The plugin was created using samples from VSCO Community Edition and assembled with Maize Sampler.

Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra (Windows)

The Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra Module contains the full SSO by Mattias Westlund, in one simple VST plugin (32 & 64bit)

The SSO samples are stereo, 16 bit, 44kHz.

While it’s not the most professional Orchestral Sample Plugin out there, it will certainly provide the building blocks for creating some astounding virtual orchestra sounds.

Melodic instruments and chromatic percussion are sampled in minor 3rds and all samples have varying amounts of stage ambience, depending on their front-to-back placement.

SSO is the one plugin on this list that provides the highest number of instruments.

You get loads of String instruments, Brass instruments, Woodwind instruments, Keys and Choirs, Chromatic Percussion and Regular Percussion.

DSK Virtuoso (Windows)

DSK Virtuoso allows you to play a combination of 6 layer instruments, or to play a composition up to 6 different parts, through the MIDI channels selectors.

The included instruments are;

Acoustic Piano, Harpsichord, Church Organ, Celesta, Glockenspiel, Vibes, Harp, Flute, Piccolo, English Horns, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba,

VSCO2 – Chamber Orchestra 2 (Windows, Mac)

The Community Edition, which is the free edition of these samples, comes with a total of 19 instruments, ranging from Woodwinds to Brass, Keys, Mallets, Strings and Percussion.

Decades of work have gone into creating these samples using nothing but the best equipment to capture them.

Conclusion

The reason I like these kinds of plugins so much is that you can create complete song just by using virtual instruments.

You will need a good MIDI controller to do this properly and fast, even though you can manually add in every note in your DAW.

Kontakt 6 does not have the ability to add user a Library some users have had success using 6 by loading there library into an older version and then swap to 6 to use them

This new mac version assembles the full library on your desktop it first it creates a folder with your new library name copies all your target files into the new folder then the software removes the old .nicnt files and replaces them with your new ones and drops both the nicnt and wallpaper into the folder for you making it first time user friendly.

Surely everyone that uses Native Instruments’ industry standard Kontakt sampler has at least 1 favorite free library or instrument.

What I’ve compiled here is a list of my personal favorites.

These are among what I find to be some of the most usable high quality libraries available.

This is not a complete list of free kontakt libraries or kontakt instruments, its simply a curated list of my favorites.

There are hundreds and hundreds of free kontakt libraries, but to be honest, a lot of them simply aren’t that good.

They get plenty of burn in my production projects at least, some may even be slept on. So here they are, in table form for your viewing pleasure:

AURORROR by Fluffy Audio

This excellent free Kontakt library is definitely the one I use the most.

Although it is a limited version of their fantastic AURORA library in terms of NKI presets, it still delivers on usability and sound quality.

AURORROR is advertised as a “horror cinematic and hybrid library” on Fluffy Audio’s website, but it’s a surprisingly versatile and flexible synth.

With more than 25 unique sound sources, 13 different modulators, an arpeggiator and polystep modes, there’s a lot to work with.

The idea is to layer up to 3 sounds and adjust the plethora of parameters to create your own sound. Your new custom preset can then be saved. Check out this review by Saint Joe of Sounds And Gear.

16PAD by HelloSamples

This developer has been around for quite some time and continues to offer a generous amount of extraordinary free and premium kontakt libraries.

Recently they stepped their game up even further by designing their own Kontakt instrument, 16PAD. Here’s a word about it courtesy of the included pdf manual:

To put it simply, it’s a 16 Pad instrument, each Pad has Volume, Panorama, Tune, ADSR, Filter + LFO, Distortion (Lo-Fi, Distortion, Skreamer, Tube) and Modulation (Chorus & Flanger) controls, plus 4

Send controls for 2 global Delay, Reverb and a Convolution Reverb (IR) effects.

There is also a simple on board step sequencer with controls for Volume, Tune and an Assignable Parameter per pad.

The pads can be selected via MIDI and can be colorized individually. The 16-channel mixer can be viewed by clicking the MIXER button to the bottom left of the step sequencer.

I would have liked to have had the ability to load my own samples and have darker more pronounced colors on the pads, but this is a very nice instrument nonetheless. Big up to HS!

Amore Grand Piano

This is a new addition to the list and honestly, we don’t have much to say about it.

It’s a great piano. And it sounds great. And it’s free.

Free HD Orchestra Chords & Sustained String Chords by Sonuscore

Both of these Kontakt instruments have an awesome sound and are dead easy to control.

There is only 1 knob on each interface, low velocity triggers major chords, and high velocity triggers minor chords. On Sustained String Chords, you can control the dynamics with the mod wheel and mix sustain and tremolo chords.

On both libraries, you can play low, mid, and high strings separately or play huge chords altogether. The interface is simple and the design straight forward.

It’s a great library for generating or enhancing your compositions.

Free Fall by Soundethers

Free Fall is another library that has been out for a while, but I think it’s one of the most underrated free Kontakt libraries.

It’s dedicated to ambient textures and evolving type sounds which are useful in many musical genres.

It comes with 18 otherwordly patches and you are free to create and save your own custom patches.

This library just begs to be experimented with and you will have 4 pages of parameters to play with: Main Engine, Effects Engine, Rhythm Engine and Output Engine.

There’s really a lot to go through with this library, once you download it, no doubt you’ll feel the same.

NS Drums J-311 by NS Drums

Just released a few days ago, NS Drum kicks (pun intended) in with a well-crafted and high quality sounding acoustic kit.

Not only does the library sound great, but it offers the ability to really customize your drum sound with a nice set of sensible parameters: Pan, Tune, Room (mic), Attack, Hold and Decay.

There are a good number of presets for each of the 6 drum sounds represented in the intuitive interface: Kick, Snare, Hi-Hat, Tom, Ride and Crash.

NS Drums J-311 also boasts I very high level of detail as there are no less than 27 layers per instrument, so you will be able to dial in just about any acoustic kit sound you like.

In addition, the FX page provides an EQ and Compressor for each instrument, while the MASTER page has an EQ and Compressor for the entire kit as well as a number of presets to choose from. Can’t wait to play around with this one.

It’s a great drum machine, and, you guessed it, it’s absolutely free.

The Alpine Project

If you’re looking for free orchestral kontakt instruments, look no further.

The alpine project is one of the most complete orchestral libraries we’ve seem- and it’s totally free!

There’s strings, woodwind, brass, and more.

Ivy Audio

Ivy Audio is a donation based sample/library producer known for its piano library.

It also offers trombones, vocals and drums, as well custom made libraries, which are of course, not for free.

If you’re looking for some classical piano, check out piano in 162.

Sometimes we want to include realistic sounding instruments in our tracks. However, recording a real instrument or buying sample libraries can turn out quite pricey. Luckily there are plenty of free Kontakt libraries from which we chose our top 10.

1. Acoustic Guitar by Pettinhouse Audio

This guitar sounds very realistic thanks to its release and fret noises. Probably my favourite free library.

2. Flutes: Persian Ney & Shakukachi from Kontakt Factory Selection

These two flutes included in Kontakt’s free selection of instruments can add lots of oriental flavour to your track. Velocity curve control and beautiful effects included.

Ekali used it in his remix of Jack U’s ‘Mind’ — passed it through some distortion and used ‘a couple manual unison tricks’ (found on reddit). Probably used also some tremolo and transposition modulation after that.

3. Amore Grand Piano by Precisionsound

A very nice grand piano with Pedal sustain support.
