Use Network Utility in Mac OS X

Network Utility is a great tool that has been around on the Mac since the very first version of OS X. It provides a variety of helpful networking tools and details, the “Info” tab includes general network info on a per interface level showingIP address, MAC address, link speeds, and sent/received data transfer statistics, and you’ll also have easy GUI access to what are otherwise command line tools, like netstat, ping, nslookup, trace route, whois, finger, and a port scanner.

Having long resided in /Applications/Utilities/, Apple saw it fit to relocate the Network Utility app from its longstanding home to a new location within a system folder, making it a bit harder to access if you’re looking through the file system. Don’t worry, there are still super-simple ways to access Network Utility onward from Mavericks and Yosemite though, and that’s what we’ll cover.

Put Network Utility in LaunchPad or the Dock

The Network Utility app is now located at the following path, buried in OS X system folders:

You can jump directly to that folder by hitting Command+Shift+G to summon “Go To” and then entering the path.

Now hold down Command+Option and drag the “Network Utility” app into the Applications folder, LaunchPad, or the Dock to create an alias for quick access (while you’re in there, you may want to send “Wireless Diagnostics” to LaunchPad or the Dock too, it got a facelift and remains an excellent wi-fi utility, scanner, stumbler, and signal optimizer app).

Launch Network Utility with Spotlight

If you don’t want aliases sitting around in the Applications folder, and don’t want the app to sit in your Dock all the time, then the easiest way to launch Network Utility directly is through Spotlight. Hit Command+Spacebar, then start typing “Network Utility” and hit return when the application is returned in the search results.

This is my preferred method but I’m a huge fan of using Spotlight as an application launcher in general.

Open Network Utility from System Information

The System Information app, found most commonly through the  Apple menu > “About This Mac” > More Info, can also serve to launch Network Utility:

  • Launch System Information and pull down the “Window” menu to find “Network Utility”

This launches directly into Network Utility, but because you have to open another app to get there, it’s probably not the quickest method compared to Spotlight, placing it in the Dock, or using an alias.

Features

LA Network Manager 3
Supporting Windows® and Mac OS X® operating systems, the LA Network Manager 3 remote control software provides control and monitoring of up to 253 L-Acoustics® amplified controllers and processors within the L-Acoustics ® L-NET Ethernet network.

An application-driven approach
LA Network Manager 3 matches the live sound engineer workflow: Setup, Tuning, and Live.

Each phase of the workflow corresponds to a specific page offering a dedicated set of tools to make the interface intuitive and quick to use. Color coding and streamlined designs have been carefully selected to maximize its clarity and usability.

Setup
The Setup page allows the user to create amplified controller and processor unit and group objects composing the sound system. Units and groups can be freely placed in the workspace in a way reflecting their true location in the field. Unit types, IP addresses, presets, input mode and routing can be easily defined for each individual unit as well as for a multiple selection of units. Copy/Paste standard functions allow for instantaneous design of symmetric systems. Set-up can be done offline with virtual units or by going online with connected units. A session file can also be created by importing a Soundvision file. This automatically creates units and groups on the workspace and populates the groups with the gain, delay and eq settings worked in Soundvision.

The network engine offers automatic discovery of all connected units including the Unit Matcher feature for quickly matching the virtual system and the physical system. Third-party devices detected on the network are indicated to avoid creating IP addresses conflicts. These time-saving features are further augmented by dedicated preparation tools such as the Custom Preset Builder and the Bank Preset Builder interfaces.

With LA Network Manager 3, new location groups are available with a dedicated green color. These groups are used with M1 as measurement locations to measure a specific set of loudspeakers within the system.

Tuning with M1 and P1
The M1 suite is a comprehensive set of measurement tools. With P1 already in the audio chain as an AVB talker or front-end processor, and M1 suite integrated within LA Network Manager 3, no other piece of hardware or software is needed to measure and tune the system.

From data acquisition, through system tuning to live monitoring M1 suite harnesses the power of L-Acoustics P1 processor and amplified controllers to offer a streamlined system calibration process.

Tuning tools
The Tuning page gives access to gain, delay, polarity, EQ processing resources, the matrix mixer and bus parameters offered by the DSP of amplified controller or processors. In addition, the Array Morphing tool provides the same sonic signature to all L-Acoustics line sources within the same installation with a frequency response adjustable from flat (classical music) to enhanced LF (live rock). Quick access to mute on unit and group objects allows for fast signal distribution verification and easy tuning of each subset of the system. All other parameters are logically sorted within the tabs of the Unit Control Panel and the Group Control Panel. Opening these panels keeps the workspace visible at all times and a thematic view slider sets what parameters are represented on the Unit Objects on the workspace. Therefore, output levels and headroom can be controlled while setting gains, for instance.

Last but not least, LA Network Manager 3 offers multiple logical entry points to system tuning thanks to the possibility to assign a unit to multiple groups. This greatly facilitates for instance the zoning of a line source using the FIR filters of amplified controllers, as well as the control of muting of the different parts of the system.

Live
The Live page is dedicated to system monitoring during operation: for each unit, LA Network Manager 3 records the average output levels and the activity of the speakers’ limiters for the past four minutes. The temperature of each unit can be remotely checked at a glance. In addition, a comprehensive Message Center reports all events that occur within the system using a simple yet efficient classification by level of importance (info, minor, major, critical) and category (network, power, input, output). All these messages plus time-stamped important actions (page switching, file loading or saving…) are saved automatically in an XML log file that can be imported in all popular spreadsheet software for analysis.

In the Live page, users need to confirm all actions that may have an impact on the show and prevent unwanted entries. These confirmations may also be enabled for the Setup and Tuning page by activating the Show mode.

M1 features a Real Time Analyzer (RTA) module which displays multiple system responses simultaneously in dB SPL, Unweighted (Z), A or C-weighted.

Array Morphing
The Array Morphing tool is an exclusive tool to control the characteristics affecting the resulting system frequency response (array size, listening distance, splay angle). The Array Morphing provides LF compensation and allows for smooth adjustment of the frequency response of a line source array, compensating for different array geometries and conditions of use.

Interactive Tutorials
An embedded help and a complete suite of interactive tutorials have been developed to allow engineers on the road to learn how to operate LA Network Manager 3 at their own pace. The tutorials are structured into a logical progression with prerequisite levels, spanning from the LA Network Manager 3 basics to the most advanced software features and tips for advanced users.
