Language Switcher is a software utility that enables you to effectively switch between various foreign languages on your Mac without restarting your computer. Most similar programs for your Mac will allow you to select a foreign language and then select which language to use for the rest of the software interface. However, most such software only allows you to select a small number of languages. Question: Q: Language switching stops working using globe button button on MBP M1

When I launch my MBP M1 language switching using fn button works normally, but in some time after launch this feature stops working, and I should reset my MBP to use this feature.

(fn button works, but it doesn’t switch languages)

How can I solve this issue?

no, it’s works! I add option+shift + space shortcut to switch language and it works, and after switching language using option+shift + space fn button also works. It’s really strange

Have the same problem (MacBook Pro m1). After a few hours after restart I can switch language using only language icon in menu bar. After restart switching with fn button works, but then the problem reappears.

Can you explain exactly what you are trying to do? By switching languages, do you mean changing the keyboard layout, or something else?

By the way, the Fn key by itself does nothing. what is exactly the shortcut you use for this?

Where do you see that globe icon? In the touchbar? Somewhere else?

Does switching from the keyboard work? In my mac that is control-shift-space. Yours may be different — see System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts->Input Sources:

It has gotten a bit confusing recently. In the latest hardware, the Fn key has a globe on it, and Apple’s instructions for Big Sur (but not Catalina) now say

«Use the Fn key or Globe: If you set an option in Keyboard preferences to change input sources by using the Fn key or Globe (if available on the keyboard), press the key to display a list of your input sources, then continue pressing the key until the input source you want to switch to is selected. The list disappears automatically.»

I have this problem as well, got my MacBook Pro M1 the day before yesterday, English and Mandarin are equally important for me so I have to switch between these two languages very often. At first, everything seems ok using globe/fn key switching, but yesterday suddenly it stops working, what I mean by ‘stop working’ is it doesn’t respond at all and I found caps key does the work but I didn’t change the system preferences. I checked system preferences and found globe/fn key is still set to switch between languages. I tried to restart the laptop but nothing changes. A couple of hours later, it suddenly becomes ok, the globe/fn did the work again. and today morning it was ok but now same problem happens again. it is quite annoying, I am writing feedback to apple, hope they will contact me.

How to Add & Switch Languages in Mac OS X

Nearly all Mac users run Mac OS in their primary language and mother tongue, but for polyglots and those aiming to be bilingual or trilingual, adding multiple new languages to Mac OS X can have obvious benefits. We’ll show you how to add a new language and how to change to that new language, which will impact how things appear and read on the Mac.

Adding a new language doesn’t remove the prior language, it becomes an additional option. In fact, you’ll have the ability to easily switch between the languages and set one or the other as a primary language at any time, and change between them as needed. How to Add & Change to a New Language to Mac OS X

1. From the  Apple menu visit “System Preferences”
2. Choose “Language & Region” preference panel

Under the ‘Preferred languages’ section, click on the plus [+] button

Navigate to and select the language you want to add, then click on the Add button

Decide whether you want to use the newly added language as your primary language, or to continue using the original language as the primary language

That’s all there is to it, easy enough. If you set the new language as your primary language, menu items will refresh, but if you want everything to switch over to your new language choice then you should log out or reboot the Mac so that applications refresh to the new language selection as well.

If you are actually going to use the secondary language full time or you are aiming to improve your proficiency, learning the keystrokes to change the keyboard language can be very advantageous, and adding an accompanying voice to the Mac can be beneficial as well.

Open different programs in different languages

Imagine if you could open different applications in different languages. Normally this requires reinstalling OS X in another language but not so with Language Switcher.

Language Switcher allows you to choose different languages for different applications. So for example, if you want Adium to open in French, and Address Book to open in German, no problem. If a program is available in multiple languages, chances are that Language Switcher can change the language of it.

Language Switcher uses a Dock-style interface that allows you to scroll through applications, see exactly how many languages each is available in, and select the language from the drop-down menu. That’s all there is to the interface except for a search box that allows you to search through applications. The only problem is that you have to launch the applications from the Language Switcher interface to see them in the language of your choice — you can’t launch them directly from the Dock.

The practical use of Language Switcher is questionable because having applications in different languages isn’t really useful. However, if you are studying a language or prefer using an application in a certain language, Language Switcher is an excellent solution.
