Installing Lego Digital Designer for Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
Former windows user here trying to find a user friendly way to install and play with a brick building program called Lego Digital Designer.
https://lego-digital-designer.en.softonic.com/
I’m not good at using the built in Terminal (what windows users call a Command Prompt) to install things like Wine although thats what people mention is needed (https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/ind. ram-for-linux/) Google searches also refer to Wine as needed.
I’ve browsed the built in Ubuntu Software store but it only has a brick program called LeoCAD but it’s a complete wimp compared to how Lego Digital Designer works and how many advanced bricks are available.
Any help. This is one of my favorite past-time programs to fiddle with as a adult lego collector after working hours.

Re: Installing Lego Digital Designer for Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
The software store should have Wine listed for install. You have to install Wine and then, from within Wine, install your Lego program.
Re: Installing Lego Digital Designer for Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
Does wine use a browser or do i download through chrome and launch the lego installation through wine?
i want to be careful

Re: Installing Lego Digital Designer for Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
You will have to d-l the program. Then you will use Wine to install the program.
Re: Installing Lego Digital Designer for Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
Install Wine from Ubuntu repository
To install Wine from a standard Ubuntu repository open up terminal and enter:FOR 64bit:
$ sudo apt install wine64
Check your version once the Wine installation is complete:$ wine —version
wine-3.0
After that i tried to check my computer, no way to launch wine. Tried installing both from software store too. Both failed to launch. and Wine didn’t show up if i right clicked the installation file. Why is the no easy way instead of learning/digging through folders and code.

Re: Installing Lego Digital Designer for Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
Since wine is (somewhat) useless without programs written for Windows and doesn’t have a graphical UI, it does not show up in the GUI. I normally start installers from the command line; the calls that an Installer makes to the Windows-API to create menu-items get translated into the creation of a .desktop-file for running the installed program with wine. So what you’d do would be something like ‘cd
/Downloads; wine setupldd-pc-4_3_12.exe’ (replace the directory where you put the installer for
/Downloads and the actual name of your installer for setupldd-pc-4_3_12.exe) and you’d end up with a shortcut on the desktop and in the Menu (or whatever else your Desktop Environment offers ).
The entry for this program in the Wine-AppDB has a few things to say about it: it says to use a 32-bit Wineprefix and to install Adobe Flash into that prefix using winetricks. Though I’ve followed those instructions all I got for my trouble was a quick flash of a window popping up followed by a segmentation fault. Either I got something wrong or there’s some kind of regression, the report in the AppDB which rated LDD «gold» was made in 2017 using wine 1.6 .
Also, further development of LDD was stopped though it still is available for download.
And while I don’t use it myself, I’ve read good things about playonlinux, which is kind of a graphical frontend for Wine.

LEGO Digital Designer

Lego Digital Designer in Wine
Hey- I see on WineHQ that this program gets their Gold rating, and there’s at least one user on the forums using it in Wine (See lego tower computer case thread).
First I had issues installing it, but after a quick google search I found I had to be in XP mode to get it to work. So- I took care of that, and it installed fine.
But- Now when I launch it everything loads ok, but once it’s finished loading- it closes.
from the terminal to save all the terminal junk to a file.
Here’s the tail end of that file-
I think the USER32.dll.PrintWindow line might be the cause of my problems. I would really like to get this running in wine. My wife and kids would appreciate to not have to reboot into Vista to use it, and it won’t run in VBox, probalby due to some 3d graphics issue.
Re: Lego Digital Designer in Wine
Few questions, first you are using the latest Lego Digital Designer (2.3.19) right? What graphics card, graphics driver version #, and Wine version are you using?

I’m not in front of that computer right now, but I think it’s version 3.0.9 (I downloaded it last night). I have a nvidia geforce 9600 gt 512mb card, I don’t know the video card driver, but it’s from the repositories, and the wine version is the newest from the Wine PPA repository.
I googled user32.dll, and I wonder, can I just copy it from a functioning windows install?
Re: Lego Digital Designer in Wine
Yes you can give that a try — but also be sure to open your winecfg and set the user32.dll to «native over ride» for your application.
Also if that does not work try reverting back to Wine version .29 — I know .30 & .31 suffered from some regressions in the 3D department.
Also the reason I asked about the Lego version is because the latest version with test results in the appdb is 2.3.19 — so if you are using a newer version than this be sure to go make a posting for it in the data base

I tried the latest wine version as a desperate attempt to see if I could get Lightroom to run correctly, but no dice. At least it gets further before failing though.
How do you revert Wine releases? Do I axe the wine ppa, uninstall, and reinstall from the official jaunty repository?
I wonder if I can find the older version of LDD somewhere.
Re: Lego Digital Designer in Wine
Yea, just comment out the Wine ppa from your sources.list for now and then
(don’t worry it will keep your installed applications/settings)
Then you simply go download an older version of Wine from here and install it.
Re: Lego Digital Designer in Wine
Hi, it is he of the lego tower computer case.
I’m using LDD v3.0.9, having upgraded from 2.4. Since the upgrade, I’ve suffered the same problem as described in the original post. I’m using Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit, using the latest stable and latest beta (1.32?) of WINE and I have a Core 2 duo @ 2.13GHz, 2GB RAM, nVidia 9500GT with 1GB RAM (so shouldn’t be a problem).
I need to use this program for my business, so I’m looking into it. And I hope we can get it sorted soon.
Also, older versions of LDD won’t connect to the server to check prices or upload

I’m glad I’m not the only one! What have you tried to get it working? I’m going to try that dll when I get home. How long have you had this problem? Did you just upgrade to the new LDD?
BTW, Your thread, which I ran across by chance, is what got me to try LDD in Wine. Up until now we’ve had to reboot, which my wife and I don’t like to do, which means our kids haven’t been able to play with it very much.
