If you want Windows 10 to recognize the key in the BIOS then the first time you install Windows 10 it has to be an upgrade not a clean install. Any subsequent installs of Windows 10 can be a clean install from the ISO.

Ahh, thanks. But it sounds like I can upgrade from the ISO, and not necessarily from automatic windows update. I just can’t do a clean install for a first time from the ISO.

Please be aware that you cannot use the free upgrade offer to perform a clean install on first attempt. You must first upgrade from the qualifying version of Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 (whether you do it through Windows Update or using the .ISO file). Ensure the upgrade is completed successfully and then ensure that it is activated. You can then proceed to do a clean install by using recovery media or using the Reset function in Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC (Get Started).

To be complete, here was my experience.

The Windows 10 update for my W541 started through the normal Windows Automatic Update (saw the creation of $Windows.

BT on the C drive). However it would fail because of error code 80240020. There are several things online that suggest how to fix it. I didn’t try them, but rather went to the following site and used the download tool to update manually. Worked fine.

That code indicates the boot.wim file was missing and I also had that same problem. So, I did the same as you and downloaded the utility to do the initial upgrade without issue.

Yes that’s true, I forgot about that part. When you run the Media Creation Tool (link below) it will ask whether you want to «Upgrade this PC now» or «Create installation media for another PC».

Another clarification. When using the manual method, it created a folder called $Windows.

WS, as opposed to $Windows.

BT. If it matters . Disk cleanup will remove them.
