Yep, since 8.1 the key is embedded in the BIOS, so you will not need to type it in during the install, so when you get to the part of the installation where is asks for the key, just click on the «I do not have a key» link and it will continue to install, and activate automatically.

If you want to extract the Windows 10 product key and save it in your records, you can use free tools like ShowKeyPlus to extract it it from the BIOS and save it to a text file.

Re:Windows 10 product key

I bought a Thinkpad P50 in oktober 2016, downgraded to windows 7 pro. Now I downloaded a usb recovery from Lenovo and uppgraded to win10 pro clean installation with formatting of the harddrive. This worked fine but the activation of windows do not work. I have retrieved the productkey from registry and tried change productkey with no success. As I understand the Product id licensed to win10 and downgraded to 7 but is it a win 7 key in registry? How to get a working key?

It doesen’y fully tell you OS serial no in bios only tiny part of it :/ so no use only way to fetch os serial no is to boot into windows and use a program like produkey that will fetch os serial.
