How to Hang Wreaths on Windows for Christmas

November 9, 2020

Sharing is caring!

A step-by-step video tutorial to learn how to hang wreaths on windows + how to add ribbon and bells for an elegant Christmas look.

Every year, I get asked this one question over and over at Christmas. And it’s so simple, that I’ve hardly ever thought about sharing a tutorial.

But as I was putting up the Christmas wreaths on our living room windows, I finally remembered to document the process. 4 years ago, I found these faux boxwood wreaths at IKEA in the clearance bin for $5.

So I scooped up a BUNCH of them with the plan to cheer up all of our windows.

(Some affiliate links are provided below. Full disclosure here.)

Best move ever! And they’re still going strong.

You can find wreaths almost identical here (still inexpensive but not quite as cheap as $5 clearance).

To change the look every year, I like to use different colored ribbon (or no ribbon at all to keep it simple).

These are some of my favorite ribbons including the burgundy velvet I’m using this year:

This time, I added these little bell ornaments I found last year for 50% off at Kirkland’s. These bells are very similar.

You can see the how-to here:

I’ve been adding little bits of Christmas here and there in the living room.

With it being pitch black by 6pm, the twinkle lights do my mood SO much good. I’m a total crabby person in winter. It probably explains why I don’t live in a state where it snows often. Haha!

Twinkle lights and cute wreaths and pretty ribbon is my saving grace right now.

How to Make Lighted Wreaths for Windows

Imagine approaching your front door on a holiday welcomed by the spill of colored lights over the snowy or leaf-strewn yard from a wreath in the window. It evokes a romantic image but — even if there is no camera-ready drift of snow or red and gold leaves — you can make it real with a wreath form and a dash of cleverness. Lighted wreaths for windows are hassle-free when hung inside the window so they are easy to plug in.

DIY Dazzler Wreath

Wrap strings of tiny white fairy lights around a plain twisted grapevine wreath. Cover the entire form so none of the brown vine shows when you are finished. Plug extra strings into each other so you end up with one wire running to the power source. Hang the wreath in a bay window or a window near your front walk for greatest visibility. After plugging the wreath in, it glows like a bright, unbroken circle of light.

Winter Wonder Wreath

Wind strings of small white LED lights around a wood embroidery hoop or a wire wreath form. Have a craft party with the kids and cut out lots of paper snowflakes. Cluster the snowflakes around the wreath form, securing them with clear monofilament, heavy white thread or silver or gold craft wire.

Do not skimp on paper snowflakes — the wreath should look bushy and full. Tie a wide ribbon — gossamer, satin or grosgrain — at the top of the wreath and hang it in the window. Stick a few more of the snowflake cutouts on the window glass and plug in the wreath for an instant twinkling blizzard.

After baking the Christmas cookies, tape translucent colored gel paper to the cookie cutters. Wind pine greenery around a metal wreath form, attaching it with green florist’s wire. Then wind a string of small round tree lights around the greenery so that light bulbs are more or less evenly spaced on both sides of the wreath.

Use tree bulb hangers or wire to attach a cookie cutter over every light and hang the wreath in the living room window. Plug it in for an old-fashioned stained glass holiday decoration that shines into and outside your home.

One-Shot Party Wreath

Windows that are inconveniently far from light fixtures get a party glow when you hang cordless wreaths that turn on with the snap of your fingers. Use a simple wire wreath form for each window. Tie neon-bright gift-wrap ribbon at the top of each wreath to hang it. Then weave flexible glow stick necklaces very carefully around the form. Braid, interweave or layer them to create a wide ribbon of necklaces around each form.

Choose holiday- or party-themed colors or go for an exuberant paint-box mix. Snap each necklace to release the reactive, light-up chemicals just before the first guests are due to arrive. The wreaths will glow for about 6 to 8 hours.

13 Wreaths for 13 Windows

Welcome to the 252nd Metamorphosis Monday!

Does this ever happen to you? The Christmas season looms ahead and you say to yourself, I’m not going to decorate as much this year. I think I’ll cut back a little. There will be less to take down and put away and it will be less stressful.

Yeah, right. That seems to last about a day around here, then suddenly I wake up one morning, a changed woman. Inspiration has hit and I’m raring to go, ready to decorate like it will be the last Christmas ever. I have no idea where that burst of energy comes from but I’m glad it seems to show up each year.

Even if it didn’t show up and I did actually cut back one year, the thing I could never give up is hanging wreaths on the windows. They make my heart sing each time I see them as I leave and return home.

And surprisingly, they are as pretty from the inside as they are from outside. I just wish I had put them up sooner this year because it’s ridiculous how happy they make me each time I notice them.

Except for the garage, I turned on all the lights on the front of the house to snap a few pics for you. Ummm, maybe I should have turned on the garage lights, too.

The Blue Hour was approaching…so pretty!

Wreaths lit up against a blue hour sky…

One last view before it became too dark for any more pics.

Pssst: I created a little tutorial post sharing how I hang the wreaths each year. You’ll find it here: How to Hang Wreaths on Exterior Windows

I’ll be working on the porch over the next few days…will share it soon.

Oh, before I forget, if you like decorating with pine garland, Trader Joe’s has it for just $7 for 20 feet! That’s enough to go all the way around an average door like mine, draping it here and there in the center as you go. Buy two or three bunches for a fuller look…at that price you can!

Looking forward to the Before and Afters linked for this Met Monday!

If you are participating in Metamorphosis Monday, you will need to link up the “permalink” to your MM post and not your general blog address. To get your permalink, click on your post name, then just copy and paste the address that shows up in the address bar at the top of your blog, into the “url” box for InLinkz.

In order to link up, you’ll need to include a link in your MM post back to the party so the other participants will have an opportunity to receive visits from your wonderful blog readers.

Please observe these few rules:

Only link up Before and After posts that are home, gardening, crafting, painting, sewing, cooking, DIY related.

Do not link up if you’re doing so to promote a website or product.

Do not link up a post that was just linked last week since a lot of readers will have already seen that post.

Do not type in ALL CAPS. It spreads the links waaaay out.
