Scansystem with Canon CanoScan LiDE 110

Unfortunately, there are still letters, some of them are useful for the tax return or just useful to have in digital form because of searching is much easier. So I want an system which is always ready to use. I bought a scanner and connected it to my Server. But how to use the buttoms on the scanner? So hear the setup for an Canon CanoScan LiDE 110 scanner. Most configuration work out of the box. Important is don’t use scanbuttond, it’s no longer really maintained and complicated when you want to use it with scanners that are not supported by default additionally it seems to have some usb issues on Arch Linux because theoretical, it would detect my scanner after patching sources.

Software

The software chosen for this is scanbd which work with sane. scanbd and the included socket will made the scanner accessible and read the buttons pressed. Sane itself is important for its config for all the scanner and for local scanning.

I’ve made these with:

Installation

The documentation in the Arch Wiki for this is very good so I will limit myself to the most important.
Install the software form AUR. I used aurget but you also can do it manually or with other tools.

copy the sane configs for using with scanbd

tell the local sane only to use network scanner so it won’t block the scanner. We will make the scanner accessible via a socket for the local sane.

configure scanbd’s sane part to not use network

When I installed scanbd inside the default config was a full debuging loglevel enabled. Change this before you start scanbd to save disk space on your system.

Make adjustments to use the “PDF” buttom on the LiDE 110 and insert this after the copy action.

enable and start services and the socket

The default test script will only work with logger which is shipped with syslog-ng!

Now you should see an action to buttom pressed in your log.

Action Script

But you need an useful action script to do something when one buttom is pressed.

Network Scanner

With sane you can use your scanner via network and XSane or scanimage on an desktop installation.

Comments

Whaow this is VERY interesting! I have the same scanner and I tried to follow your instructions but I got a bit lost… I am on Ubuntu (14.04) so I tried to mix your article with this one: http://virantha.com/2014/03/17/one-touch-scanning-with-fujitsu-scansnap-in-linux/ wich is adapted to another scanner but on Ubuntu.

I understand I have to adapt paths (“/etc/scanbd/” becomes “/usr/local/etc/scanbd/”) and commands (“systemctl start scanbd.service” becomes “service scanbd start” for example) but I still don’t see anything in the syslog (with “tail -f /var/log/syslog”) when I press the buttons of the scanner (I am testing with the original “test.script” from scanbd for the moment). Would it be possible for you to adapt your article to an Ubuntu setup?

Thank you very much for any help!

@max: the action script does the logging, the ubuntu test script also?

I recently purchased the Lide 110 and tried to get the scanner buttons working on my ubuntu home server using a tool called scanbuttond. But after a day of trying to compile everything, I figured two things:

scanbuttond works only with lower versions of the Canon Lide series, including Lide 100 and 200.

210. So even if you manage to get it all compiled, the old genesys backend no longer works.

So I started to dig into the various information on the internet and have finally figured a way to get this working. I thought it would be useful to share with people who need to get this combination working.

I have detailed the full steps in my own blog:

Canon Lide 100 Scanner in Ubuntu with sane: Installation & Permission Fixes

At last I managed to make my scanner (Canon canoscan Lide 100) work in my Ubuntu (10.04). I was having a lot of problems and was having problems with permission. I don’t know if I was having problem with installation, either. So, rather finding out what fixed the problem, I’m describing all I did.

Note: Though i mentioned canon Lide 100 at the title, the tutorial is applicable for any scanners supported by sane-genesys 5! You may check here whether you’ve a supported scanner.

Compile SANE

We will use sane-genesys as backend for scanning, which now supports Lide 100 along with a lot of different scanner models. You can check if your scanner is available, by using this page.

This portion is copied from the links i mentioned at the end of this article. Open a terminal and paste following:

Gedit will open a file for editing, paste these lines at the end of the file:

Save the file and close gedit, reboot your machine.

Now, you should see your scanner listed by the following command:

If you find nothing, try:

If now you find your printer listed, skip to next section. Otherwise, execute following command:

Now, check again by typing sudo scanimage -L; if it still says it cannot find the scanner, check by typing sane-find-scanner in the terminal, the scanner should be listed under available USB scanners. If you don’t find it listed here, you’ve done something wrong while installing SANE or the scanner may be disconnected/malfunctioning 😦

Setting Permissions

If you don’t set permission for general users, only the root will be able to scan (which is considered dangerous). First run the following command:

This will give output like:

device `genesys:libusb: XXX : YYY ‘ is a Canon LiDE 100 flatbed scanner

Now execute following line in terminal replacing the parts as colored.

You’ll be able to enjoy your scanner now! Test by running some GUI front-end, like xsane or Simple Scan (you can find these at Software Center)

Note: You may change permission every time you disconnect & then connect your scanner.

Canon LIDE 100 scanner

I just bought a Canon LiDE 100 scanner.

Cheap USB scanner. Pretty good quality. Bus powered

lsusb shows the following
Bus 007 Device 007: ID 04a9:1904 Canon, Inc.

However xsane doesn’t detect it. Any suggestions?

Re: Canon LIDE 100 scanner

I had the Lide 200 USB. I am pretty experienced in Linux and Ubuntu — but there is really nothing I could do to get the 200 to work. Ended up putting it on a Windows box (the only one I have left in the house).

Good scanner overall — cannon is not real good when it comes to Linux support.

Re: Canon LIDE 100 scanner

anyone got any clue about this? there’s got to b a way for this scanner to work

i get this output when running san-find-scanner

but scanimage -L generates the following

any tips? suggestions?

Re: Canon LIDE 100 scanner

I would love to hear any ideas or suggestions as well- I’m having the same problem with a LIDE 200. It looks like both the 100 and 200 aren’t even listed on the SANE site at all..

Re: Canon LIDE 100 scanner

I was thinking about purchasing the 200 and would also like to see if there are any ways to get it working.

Re: Canon LIDE 100 scanner

Go to the SANE project site’s list of supported scanners, http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl, and see if yours is listed. If so, download the driver (as a .deb) install it and see if that helps. it’s how I got an Epson CX7450 to scan.

Re: Canon LIDE 100 scanner

Guys, have you tried to use the driver of similiar Canon scanner? This method often goes succesful.

Here we have close number models, like LIDE 90, 80, and so on:

You know, they put new models every month to keep up selling, but it might only be the different outside of the same sh.t.
I do care, ‘coz i’m interested in buying LIDE 100.
