Довольно часто по работе шлют переписку, сохранённую из Microsoft Outlook, который сохраняет письма в специальном закрытом бинарном формате.
Эти файлы с письмами имеют расширение *.msg .
В Linux нет программ для открытия msg-файлов. Ни один почтовый клиент не умеет это делать.
В данной статье расскажу о способе, которым сам пользуюсь, для конвертации *.msg в *.eml.

Итак, вся конвертация происходит в терминале, gui приложение я не искал, да и не особо хотел.
Возможно есть визуальный конвертер, но я его не искал. Этот конвертер работает просто.

Для нашей цели будем использовать специальный конвертер

Открываем терминал и устанавливаем пакетный менеджер gem , чтобы устанавливать ruby пакеты.

sudo apt-get install rubygems gem

Теперь уже можно установить сам конвертер.

sudo gem install ruby-msg

Теперь чтобы переконвертировать файл *.msg, в терминале переходим в папку, где у нас лежит файлик.msg, с помощью команды cd(к примеру в папку документы):

И затем уже выполняем шаблонную команду:

mapitool -i имя_файла.msg

В моем случае это

mapitool -i переписка.msg

В результате в папке появится файлик *.eml:

Теперь полученный файл можно открыть почтовым клиентом, к примеру Thunderbird.
Вот так очень просто это делается.

Linux convert msg to eml

A perl script to convert Outlook .msg files in to .eml files to read on Ubuntu Linux using Thunderbird.

Install the required perl packages with the following commands

Install Thunderbird (if you don;t already have it) with sudo apt-get install thunderbird

Download and save msgconvert.pl to your computer

Make it executable with chmod +x /path/to/msgconvert.pl

Open .msg files with /apth/to/msgconvert.pl /path/to/emailfile.msg

You can configure Nautilus to open .msg files when you double-click them

Right click any .msg file

Select Open with Other Application

Click the arrow next to Use a Custom Command

Click the Browse button and choose the msgconvert.pl file

Now when you double click a .msg file, it will be automatically converted to a .eml file and opened in Thunderbird.

###—mbox —mbox
Deliver to the given mbox file instead of creating individual .eml files.

###—exec —exec
After creating output files, run the specified command with each output file as a parameter e.g. msgconvert.pl —exec thunderbird input.msg

###—verbose —verbose
Print information about skipped parts of the .msg file.

###—help —help
Print a brief help message.

By default the script will open the converted files with thunderbird, you can over ride this with the —exec option. Preferably the script would by default use no application, but Nautilus doesn’t allow you to specify options for ‘open with’ scripts. If you’d rather have no default application, simply change the parameter on line 19 from my $execute = ‘thunderbird’; to my $execute = »;

MSG Microsoft Outlook Email Format

MSG — это формат файла, используемый Microsoft Outlook и Exchange для хранения сообщений электронной почты, контактов, встреч и других задач. Такие сообщения могут содержать одно или несколько полей электронной почты с отправителем, получателем, темой, датой и телом сообщения или контактной информацией, сведениями о встрече и одной или несколькими спецификациями задач. EML E-Mail Message File

msg to eml format conversion

I’m searching for a method to convert msg files to eml format. I have Outlook 2010 but it appears only possible to save as msg. I did find some third party tools that can be used but I prefer not to use a third party tool — if possible.

MSG file and EML file both formats are used for containing the email with the attachment, but different from each other. EML extension used by multiple email clients, other hand MSG file only used by Outlook email client. In your scenario, you need an effective way to convert multiple MSG files to EML format, by using Outlook email client you can easily convert MSG file to EML format by using save as option of Outlook email client, but this way cannot convert their attachment.

If you are looking for a quick and dirty VB script, Redemption is probably your only option. Other options are IConverterSession (C++ or Delphi only) or explicitly building the MIME file one line at a time from various message properties ( MailItem can be returned by calling Namespace.OpenSharedItem in the Outlook Object Model).
