Update error in Ubuntu are pretty common. One of the errors you will see while updating Ubuntu is failed to download package files. In this quick tip we shall see how to fix this error.

This error is not limited to Ubuntu only. Other distributions based on Ubuntu too have this error every now and then. In fact, I encountered this issue in Elementary OS but since the fix is common to all, I put Ubuntu in title so that it could reach more people.

Let’s try to understand the error first. I ran the Update Manager and I saw ‘failed to download package files error’:

Looking at the details of the error, I found that it could not get a specific package from the URL it was trying to access. I copied the URL and tried to access it via web browser. As expected, files was not there:

To further check, I tried to look for all the available versions of the same package only to find that specific version which Update Manager was looking for was missing:

Now, this is amusing. Why would the Update Manager try to get the version which is not on the server?

Fixing ‘failed to download package files’ error

The reason for this error is that Update Manager is using a server which doesn’t have that specific package version, not yet. If you do not know already, when you install Ubuntu or any other Linux OS, the software sources are set by default to the server mirror near your location. This is to ensure that software downloads (and updates) are at good speed.

But it could happen that the server your system is using, has not been updated from the main server yet. This could happen for several reasons. What you can do to fix the error is to change the server to Main Server and you can continue with the updates smoothly.

Let’s see how to fix it.

In Ubuntu Software tab, change server to Main server.

Save your change. It will update the software cache. Run the Update Manager again. The update should work just fine now.

How do I fix a «Failed to download package files» error?

After I installed Ubuntu , I cannot update any software with the error message «failed to download package files». After having googled, I have tried:

1. sudo apt-get update
2. sudo apt-get upgrade
3. changed to another sources

But I still got the same error message. And there is no problem with internet connection as i can connect to internet using Firefox in Ubuntu.

Press Alt + F2 and type software-properties-gtk .

Change the download location to Main Server or another server close to the country you live in and try to sudo apt-get update again.

Run the following commands (saves a backup of the old lists and creates a new lists folder) and the BADSIG error does not occur:

There’s a Package Manager Troubleshooting Procedure that usually solves this sort of problem. Perform steps 1-4 of that procedure. (Step 1, which is sometimes enough, is what Bruno Pereira has posted—in better detail—in this answer. If step 1 isn’t enough, continue with the other steps.)

If that doesn’t solve the problem, then please select all the text in the Terminal ( Edit > Select All ), copy it to the clipboard ( Edit > Copy ), and edit your question to include it (you’ll want to make it a blockquote so that the formatting doesn’t get messed up). This will then provide highly useful information for solving the problem.

It seems that single enabled repository failing to update will cause this message. In my case, it was dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/bionic — I unchecked and no longer get error messages.

I’m on Linux Mint, which is Ubuntu at its base (which is Debian at its base), anyway, very probably this will work.

Start «Ubuntu Software Center». Then: Edit -> Software Sources. On the dropdown select another country / server.

It’s about IPv6. Do you know IPv6? It means a lot more IP addresses and it takes away NAT-problems. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6

On Ubuntu it’s quite easy to take your first IPv6 steps: just that one command «sudo apt-get install miredo»

OK, please install miredo. You can also install via Ubuntu Software Center: search «miredo» and then install-click ‘miredo’, not ‘miredo-server’

Best method to getaway from this problem is to install fix404. You can read about it more here:

Under Ubuntu, the APT package index is a database containing all packages of repositories (PPAs) defined in the /etc/apt/sources.list file. To update this database after adding some repositories, we need to use this command from the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

Sometimes, when running the command given above, we get error messages (404 Not Found) that are the result of wrong PPAs, which may slow down the update process via the Terminal. In fact, this 404 Not Found error messages are not harmful at all, but you can use Fix404 to detect and remove these PPAs.

To install Fix404 on Ubuntu 11.04, launch the Terminal and run these commands:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:lkjoel/fix404
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fix404

To install on Ubuntu 10.10/10.04, download this deb package here.

To start using Fix404, run this command (root privileges required):

Then follow displayed instructions to disable PPAs causing the 404 Not Found Error.

Via the «Dash» (UbuntuLogo in the left of the desktop)
Type in the searchbar: Software and you will see the program ‘Software & Updates’ Click on it. (it take a wile for opening, so be patient)
Than on the first tab you see some button in the middle. (there something on like: http:// . ) Click on that and choose for the main server.
You can also choose the last option (I don’t now what it is in English, here is in Dutch) and then the computer can search for the best server.
Than close the window and use the terminal again with the same command.

Thread is tagged Xubuntu — there is no such thing as Dash in it.

Software and Updates can be found in the Settings Manager from the menu.

Then you can follow the rest of heir4c’s post
