Linux failed to start session

Lightdm: Failed to start session

Задача: разогнать видеокарту geforce gtx1060. Поставил дрова Nvidia 384. Те притянули с собой кучу зависимостей + lightdm. Последовательность действий при попытке залогинится в лайтдм(auth.log): 1. lightdm: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_kwallet.so): /lib/security/pam_kwallet.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory lightdm: PAM adding faulty module: pam_kwallet.so lightdm: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_kwallet5.so): /lib/security/pam_kwallet5.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory lightdm: PAM adding faulty module: pam_kwallet5.so

sudo apt install libpam-kwallet4 libpam-kwallet5

2. lightdm: pam_kwallet(lightdm:auth): (null): pam_sm_authenticate lightdm: pam_kwallet5(lightdm:auth): (null):pam_sm_authenticate lightdm: pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement «user ingroup nopasswdlogin» not met by user «имя»

Удалил вроде ненужное приложение telegraph(или что-то похожее -по описанию с DM никак не связанное) и при следующем ребуте DM перестал пускать в систему.

1. lightdm: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_kwallet.so): /lib/security/pam_kwallet.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Fix “Failed To Start Session” At Login In Ubuntu 16.04

Last updated February 13, 2018 By Abhishek Prakash 70 Comments

I was trying to log in to Ubuntu as usual. I entered my password and it did not log me in even with the correct password. Instead, it showed me failed to start session in red colors. I could not even log in to guest session.

In this quick post, we shall see how to fix failed to start session issue in Ubuntu 16.04 and earlier versions.

Note: If you see only the wallpaper, no Unity, launcher and dash after login, try this Ubuntu login failed fix.

Fix failed to start session in Ubuntu

The reason here is that somehow your Unity desktop has been messed up. You can try several way to recover it. Let’s see how to do it.

When you are at login, press Ctrl+Alt+F1. It will take you to command line interface from the GUI. In here, type your username and password. Now, you can try the following command to install Unity Desktop:

If it is already installed, try reinstalling:

Once it is installed or reinstalled. Use the following command to reboot the system:

It will reboot and bring you back to login screen. Try login now. You should be able to log in. If you are still unlucky, try to use the alternative below:

Alternative method 1:

As an alternative you can use the command below to reconfigure the packaging:

At times, this should fix the failed to start session issue in Ubuntu. But it was not that easy for me. I used another approach which is slightly dirty. When I saw that reinstalling Unity and reconfiguring the packages dis not make any difference, I installed Gnome instead using a command like this:

This time at reboot, I was able to boot in to Gnome desktop or even choose to boot in to Ubuntu default i.e. Unity. A word of warning, Unity may seem broken after installing Gnome. Change the theme and icons to that of Ambiance, instead of default (Adawita).

That helped me fix “failed to load session” error in Ubuntu 16.04. Did it work for you? Do let me know if you have questions or suggestions.

How to solve ‘Failed to start session’ with LightDM and Xfce

Failed to start session issues with LightDM and Xfce is really annoying. Due to some wrong configuration files, if you install Xfce on top of an Ubuntu Server or if you move away from an old desktop environment for an Xfce session on Ubuntu, you finally get in stuck at the LightDM login screen with no possibility to enter in your GUI system.

The infamous ‘Failed to start session’ error on LightDM

Failed to start session problem on Ubuntu, but also on another Linux systems

I was trying to log in to an Ubuntu system as usual and got a claimable error ‘Failed to start session’. I entered my password and it did not log me in, but the password was correct. Instead, it showed me a red color error message. I could not even log in to guest session nor use different session.

Usually, when you are at the login screen, pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, you can enter to command line interface from the GUI. There, inserting username and password, you’ll get a command line terminal session. But not in this case. From Ctrl+Alt+F1 to Ctrl+Alt+F10, do nothing and I’m stuck at LightDM login screen session.

To solve this annoying issue, I did some simple things. My system was a fresh install of Ubuntu Server 18.04 from a minimal ISO, then I have installed Xfce with:

$ sudo apt install xfce4

At this point, no login screen. I booted in a classical CLI server interface and, after I was entered, I can go to GUI session with a classic command:

So, I decided to install the default Xfce login manager, the famous LightDM.

$ sudo apt install lightdm

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

Ok, I’m on board. Let’s reboot the system and…

I’m stuck here. To solve this issue, restart the system from the icon at the top-right. During the rebooting process, press ‘ESC’ to enter in the Grub and select ‘Advanced options for Ubuntu’.

The recovery mode advanced options for Ubuntu

Then ‘Ubuntu, with Linux 4.xx.x-xx-generic (recovery mode)’ and wait until it’s completely loaded. On the next menu, please select ‘root’ for ‘Drop to root shell prompt’. In the end, press ‘Enter’ for maintenance mode and you get a root (#) terminal prompt.

LightDM on Ubuntu is configured for Unity, the old default DE

The problem with LightDM in Ubuntu repository is that it’s configured for Unity, the old default Ubuntu desktop environment. So, now, let’s config LightDM for Xfce.

We remove the Unity config file:

We create an Xfce config file for LightDM:

And we populate it with the right things:

[SeatDefaults]
greeter-session=unity-greeter
user-session=xfce

Esc:wq and reboot to test if it’s working.

Bonus point. The autologin

If you also want to disable the guest user access and make effective the autologin option, add this lines in the file edited above:

allow-guest=false
autologin-user=
autologin-user-timeout=0

18.04 LTS — GNOME — Failed to start session

I’ve updated my PC some weeks ago from 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS and everything seemed fine. Two days ago though I resumed my PC from standby and the login screen (I suppose gdm3 — it looked like this) wouldn’t let me enter the password for my user but instead always say something like ‘Login failed‘ as if the keyboard would spamming the Return key on the empty password field. Mouse was still working so I tried clicking «Log in as another user» though there was no other user available. Didn’t work either and just returned to the login screen with the ‘Login failed‘ error message. I was able to shutdown and restart the PC with the upper right icon though, which I did in the end. That’s where my problem started.

After the restart it suddenly showed a completely different login screen (I’m guessing it’s lightdm based on what I could find out). It looked like this:
screenshot50.png

When I try to enter my password on this login screen (username is correct), all it says is «Failed to start session» all the time.
That’s where I’m stuck. Don’t know what I can do to login to my GNOME desktop. I clearly need help.

I can switch to a virtual console (Ctrl + Alt + F1) and login there without any problem. Even sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade works.

Based on tips I got in another forum I already tried the following things:

resulted in black screen with a working mouse cursor just like before

  • Temporarily added a boot parameter nomodeset (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters). Just boots to lightdm login screen and the usual «Failed to start session» error.
  • That’s where I’m at the moment. I’m desperate and would welcome any help. Please help me get back into my desktop.

    How To Fix «Failed To Start Session» Error At Ubuntu Login

    How To Fix
    «Failed To Start Session»
    Error At Ubuntu Login

    Failed start to start session in Login — Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 or Ubuntu 14.10. Here’s how to fix «failed to start session» at login in Ubuntu Systems:

    I have installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in one of my friends Laptop and installed/removed certain things after that as usual rebooted the system. Entered my password and it shows «failed to start session» error in Login screen.. even , I can’t able to login to guest session. So, Little bit, I have googled about this issue and found the reason for this issue.. It’s because Ubuntu’s Unity desktop got broken in some way..

    There are two methods available to fix this problem. If first method fails . use second one..

    Method 1 : Installing/Reinstalling Ubuntu Desktop

    Step 1:

    Switch to command-line (Press CTRL + ALT + F1 ) and type your user name and password. Then, run the following command to install Unity desktop again..

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

    If it’s already installed try to reinstall it..

    sudo apt-get install —reinstall ubuntu-desktop

    Once the installation finished reboot the system..

    Now try to login.. You should be able to login to your system.. But .. if you still get «Failed to start session error» try alternate method (METHOD 2) shown below..

    Method 2: Reconfigure Installed Packages and Install Gnome DESKTOP :

    After reinstalling Ubuntu Desktop.. if you still get «Failed to start session».. try to reconfigure all installed packages.. This may solve the problem..

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a

    If you still not able to login, install gnome-desktop. so that you can simply login through that one.
    Install Gnome DESKTOP with following command..

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-shell ubuntu-gnome-desktop

    After successful installation, issue following command to reboot your system..

    Finally, This will solve your problem to log into the system.. and you should be able to log into your system successfully..
