fluxbox and gnome terminal -storing settings problem
I’ve Ubuntu 9.04 and fluxbiox 1.1.1.1
I would like to store the position, size, and desktop of gnome-terminal, but when I mark all this settings it didn’t work. For example for firefox and thunderbird it’s works fine.
What can it be? Maby the problem is that is a generic gnome software?
Re: fluxbox and gnome terminal -storing settings problem
thats because gnome-terminal doesn’t remember that kind of stuff, you’ll have to use the command line options. read «man gnome-terminal»
example: gnome-terminal —geometry 100×40+0+0
Re: fluxbox and gnome terminal -storing settings problem
Mmh . but look, in KDE, I could save the window properities without any specific gnome-terminal options. Also I have the second laptop in my work. where fluxbox store window setting and I do not need any specific options to lunch it. Both systems are ubuntu, so I don’t know where could be the problem about.
Re: fluxbox and gnome terminal -storing settings problem
With respect to Fluxbox and storing window settings; that is the functionality of Fluxbox) not the actual tool. How do you do it in Gnome? I don’t know.. I use fluxbox.
Re: fluxbox and gnome terminal -storing settings problem
Yeah, I use flux too. Sorry, but what I wrote last post was wrong. all my fluxbox machines didn’t store the gnome-terminal settings.
When I was using gnome, to store the window geometry settings I use devilspie, but it also didn’t store the gnome-terminal geometry settings
Now I set-up the command as kerry_s told, and start the command with -geometry argument.

Fedora
Fluxbox.
- xscreensaver
Fedora
Fluxbox wiki.

Switching from Gnome to Fluxbox
I’ve got an HP 2133 mininote with Ubuntu 8.04 on it. Gnome runs VERY slowly on that machine, so I’d like to replace it with Fluxbox, which I’ve gotten to know from Fluxbuntu. I’d also like to replace Nautilus with Thunar.
Does anyone have any advice for me? From what I gather I should just download the Fluxbox and Thunar packages via Synaptec, but I want some confirmation on this before I muck about in there.
I’m also wondering if I need to change any configuration files after I install those packages.
Any advice from those who’ve done something similar is appreciated.
Re: Switching from Gnome to Fluxbox
Downloading the fluxbox package will allow you to use fluxbox in ubuntu, from an option in your session menu.
However, downloading and installing fluxbuntu will add a ubuntu-derivative that installs programs recommended for fluxbox.
I would personally just sudo apt-get install fluxbox

Cj Master,If you use «sudo apt-get install fluxbox» does it remove gnome in the process? also, are there any consequences to removing gnome.(and to Robotman), exactly what is nautilus and do you have to learn any new commands if you replace that? .(Note, I’m nearly a complete greenhorn when it comes to linux/unix and terminal use. Just started 3 days ago
)

Re: Switching from Gnome to Fluxbox
To unix-vocab_trainwreck: sudo apt-get install fluxbox won’t remove GNOME, but I don’t think there’s any reason not to just open up Synaptic, search for Fluxbox, and install it from there. Last time I installed Fluxbox (in Debian Etch), I also installed feh, fluxconf, and fbpager, all of which are helpful to have (for me). Nautilus is just the GNOME file manager and Thunar is the Xfce file manager and you can add Thunar without removing Nautilus. I think using Fluxbox might force you to get comfortable with the command line a bit, and with Linux in general, so consider yourself warned. For me, it sure helped me to understand how a lot of things are put together in other desktop environments and window managers.
To Robotman, I can’t think of any configuration files that were there before that I’ve had to change. But Fluxbox itself requires a bit of tweaking, of course, and you’ll want to get your
/.fluxbox/menu configured to your tastes. Whenever I install Fluxbox, I don’t remove any GNOME or KDE stuff that’s already there on the system. I’ve done several Fluxbox installations. Once I’m logged into it, it always seems fast and crisp compared to GNOME or KDE. I like to use a few KDE apps in combination with Fluxbox (mainly Konqueror and Amarok) but those are probably not important to you.
One habit I’ve gotten into, I keep copies of
/.fluxbox/menu files that I’ve used in the past, so that when I do a new installation I copy and paste one in and then tweak it to fit the distro I’m using. This seems to make installing and setting up Fluxbox go much faster for me. I can share some of those with you if you’d like — I found it helpful to see some examples of that file. Or you can find some other examples elsewhere on the internet, of course. Of course you’ll have to make sure that in the
/.fluxbox/init file the session.menuFile: line says
The only other thing I’d add here: I remember stumbling around quite a bit the first time I installed Fluxbox (it was in Mepis), and had to Google around a lot to find info about getting it set up. If you keep good notes, it helps quite a bit when you go to install it again later. At this point, for me it seems quick and easy to install and set up, but there are a few differences when it comes to installing it in different distros.

Best Terminal Emulator For Fluxbox?
What is the best terminal emulator for Fluxbox? What do you guys use? What looks the nicest? What has transparency? Right now I’m using gnome-terminal but I don’t want gnome installed on my system. I’m also using thunar to manage files.

Questions like these are just a matter of taste. You basically just asked, «What’s better, Coke or Pepsi?»
Sprite, of course, is the correct answer.

I happen to like rxvt-unicode no matter what kind of DE/WM I’m running. Seems to be popular amongst Arch users. Lightweight too.

Yeah, that would be the xfce4-terminal. I love that one!

I’m not posting this to start a coke/pepsi war. Orange juice is best. What I’m asking here is what do YOU guys use because I want to KNOW what’s OUT THERE. So I can TRY them MYSELF.

Re: Best Terminal Emulator For Fluxbox?
Yeah, urxvt can do I believe they call it pseudo-transparency. Just put the line urxvt*transparent: true in your .Xdefaults file or create one if you don’t have one already. There are lots of posts here in the forums with sample urxvt .Xdefault files. You have to put something like feh —bg-center /home/username/picture.jpg in your autostart file as well for the transparency to work. You need to pacman -S feh for that. Or in fluxbox just follow the Background section of the wiki : http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fluxbox

No, you’re not alone out there.

Re: Best Terminal Emulator For Fluxbox?
One great thing of urxvt is urxvt daemon:
«This manpage[urxvtd describes the urxvtd daemon, which is the same vt102 terminal emulator as urxvt, but runs as a daemon that can open multiple terminal windows within the same process.
You can run it from your X startup scripts, for example, although it is not dependent on a working DISPLAY and, in fact, can open windows on multiple X displays on the same time.
Advantages of running a urxvt daemon include faster creation time for terminal windows and a lot of saved memory.
The disadvantage is a possible impact on stability — if the main program crashes, all processes in the terminal windows are terminated. For example, as there is no way to cleanly react to abnormal connection closes, «xkill» and server resets/restarts will kill the urxvtd instance including all windows it has opened. «
