Re:T14 (AMD) FreeSync on Linux

I don’t have a T14, or AMD, or a free sync monitor 🙁

If you have an nvidia card, does this help? https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/freesync-vesa-adaptive-sync-under-linux-nvidia-drivers-q-a-thread/69144

For nvidia you need an accountants attention to detail: card description, card type, driver description and so forth. nvidia has lots of cards, lots of drivers, most cards kind of work with lots of drivers, but if you want freesync to work there are only one or two drivers, if any , for your card.

No, this T14 model only has an integrated AMD Vega graphics card.

Linux freesync on laptops

Xorg (Commonly also called, X11, X server or simply X) is a nearly 40 year old piece of software which is used to manage application windows and UI elements. The whole graphical user interface you are using an interacting with is being drawn and managed by Xorg.

Wayland is it’s modern replacement. It is faster, has more features and should also be more secure due to it’s reduced complexity.

KDE is currently putting a lot of work in to getting their desktop Wayland ready. It is quite usable however there is still some missing functionality and bugs.

Make sure plasma-wayland-session is installed, and if it is then you can select Plasma on Wayland as your GUI in your display manager. Your display manager is where you login.

And yet its taken until now for Wayland to take up a real priority in the Linux community, especially where Gaming is concerned. NVIDIA is just about to release GPU Driver 470.xx that will properly support it.

There were a couple of contenders to replace X. Mir and Wayland being the main big ones. It takes a while for new tech to become mature, the Linux community needs a lot of time to learn these new tools and evaluate every option.

GNOME has been pushing for Wayland for several years already, in the last year Plasma started going all-in aswell. And some others such a XFCE are still considering if they want to switch to or at least support Wayland.

Nvidia not supporting Wayland is an Nvidia problem, not a Linux community problem. The community has no say in or control over closed source proprietary software. Intel and AMD have supported it for years already, both of which have open source drivers.

But i tought the nvidia cards have open source drivers? At least from what i’ve read they are crap and extremely slow, but they exist.
