Installation screen expects Username and Password?

Installation screen expects Username and Password?

Post by TonyMi » Wed Jun 13, 2012 9:00 am

I’ve decided to give LMDE 2012 (32 bit) a try on an old laptop before installing on my main system.

The DVD has booted, no problem but I cannot get to install the system since Linux Mint is expecting a Username and Password in the Welcome screen. Well I do not have these since the installation hasn’t taken place so they do not exist. I’ve tried the usual of root and administrator in various combinations but without being able to get in. Does anyone have a clue as to what the username and password should be?

Also whilst writing, should I choose MATE or CINNAMON? (if I get that far), I’ve not yet found a good comparison to help me decide which is the best way to go.

Many Thanks, Tony.

Hi,
as you can read here:

Login and password for the live session

The Live session should log you in automatically. If it doesn’t, or if you need to login manually (for instance, to try out Cinnamon), you can use the following credentials:

For the username, type “mint”
For the password, if asked, just press Enter.

I tried to install Linux mint 32bit Mate on my HP Pavilion dv2000, using DVD, but the installer is asking for user name and password, as per the suggestion by the forum I tried user name «mint» (without quotes) and for password just pressed «Enter» The Login screen is showing wrong username and password. Would anyone help me install Linux mint on my personal box, I don’t have Internet connection to the box.

I tried on virtual box in DELL Vostro on windows 7. successfully installed and simply awesome

Thanks in advance.

Hi thanks everyone. It was asking me for login credentials because I created the USB as ext 4. I did that because it didnt seem like it was working when I was trying ext 2 (its been a while since I made a live usb so I forgot if it was ext 2 or ext 4). When I changed it to ext 2 it took me to the live desktop as default. I made it as ext 4 because on ext 2 the USB looked like it froze at 65% I finally ended up leaving it when it did the same on ext 4 and after about 15min it completed.

Thanks for your help. It was just a Live USB creation error

Linux Mint root password for live session?

Today, Is my terrible day with Linux Mint . respectively. I cannot boot to any OS except using live session of Linux Mint that prompted for login that I never do! I’m trying to install linux mint this morning and everything went so bad..my purpose is to succeed in making booatble USB (worked) but FAILED when installing the OS. Do any of you know what is root password for linux mint qiana or alternative to pass the login menu. I really sad..so sad..and I will never to try change os other than Ubuntu Distributions. respectively.

* i really need help asap :'(

Re: Linux Mint root password for live session?

Mint is just like Ubuntu and has no root account, therefore no root password; it uses sudo command with your user password, which assumes that you as a user are a member of the sudo group, which the first user made during installation will be by default.

This also assumes that the iso file you used was a good one, and the install medium (USB) was not corrupt in any way.

Re: Linux Mint root password for live session?

If the live Mint session is prompting you for login credentials, then you likely have a bad burn or a bad ISO.

Re: Linux Mint root password for live session?

i think the password should be blank/null/empty/void

Re: Linux Mint root password for live session?

All method not worked. my tecnique to solv this-

— Borrow friend’s laptop
— Download Ubuntu’s .iso and install to USB
— Boot and install Ubuntu

* It took a day just for finding root password.

Re: Linux Mint root password for live session?

Mint’s live session boots directly to the desktop. No password requested or required. Nor does use of ‘sudo’ require a password in a live session.

Re: Linux Mint root password for live session?

@InterProg, please take heed of buzzingrobot’s post. What buzzingrobot has said is true of Mint, Ubuntu and the Ubuntu flavours, such as Xubuntu and Lubuntu. Your posted «solution» was not a true solution, merely an avoidance of the problem that you encountered with the Mint USB. As stated before, you probably had a corrupted ISO or a corrupted USB.

And I’m sure you’ve been told this before: Don’t bother with the root account or setting a password for it in either Mint or Ubuntu. Instead have a read of this wiki page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo . You need to understand it.

What is the default password for a Linux Mint live usb

Im sure some else has had this problem before, but I can’t seem to find a proper answer. What is the default password for a linux mint live usb?

Most of the other answers say that my install would be corrupt if it is asking me; however, I need to know because I am trying to ssh into it.

The username for the live session is mint . If asked for a password press Enter .

No (publicly known) password for the default user

There is no (publicly known) password for the default user in Ubuntu based flavours and distros. When asked for a password, for example to run sudo, you simply press the Enter key. But ssh wants a password, so it does not work to log in remotely via ssh into a persistent live drive.

Create a second user with a password

I found a way to connect to a persistent live Ubuntu based distro via ssh. I tested with a recent iso file of Lubuntu Eoan (to be released as 19.10), but I think the method is general and should work for many versions, flavours and re-spins based on Ubuntu including Linux Mint.

  • Create a persistent live drive with mkusb from your iso file.
  • Boot into your persistent live system

Get packages (unless you have them already)

in order to get users-admin and of course

The default live user needs no password to run sudo, just press the Enter key, when it asks for password.

Create a second user

and follow the instructions in the graphical user interface. Select a good password with at least 8 characters.

Now you have an ssh server and a user with a password, and you can log in remotely to your persistent live system 🙂

Connect to your network and identify your IP address

I found the following address: 192.168.1.10

Demo input and output

You can see that the root file system / has the same properties as the casper-rw partition. It indicates that it is a persistent live system. You can also see that it is possible to switch user to the default user (here ‘lubuntu’).

Reset the password for ROOT or any user

I am sure that people in the know can restore almost any password, it is important to know HOW. But I was wondering just how to recover passwords in my favorite OS is Linux Mint. In this article we will focus on the recovery of lost passwords for Linux Mint.
So, the following method is good because it is done very quickly and allows you to change the password to one or more users. On my operating system as most people have only one user, therefore the password root changing along with the password of the Main user.
That is, if I change the password to my single user l4l, then user root will automatically change the password. On other operating systems, I think the user root as separately. In any case I am not interested in, the main thing here everything is convenient and WORKS))))

First way
Let’s start, we need to get into the boot menu of GRUB. When the computer boots, hold down the “SHIFT” key. In the grub boot loader to select the desired OS and press “E” to edit the boot.

Next we need at the end of the kernel line, after quiet splash add rw init=/bin/bash and press “F10” to boot.

In this case, after the kernel is loaded, the control immediately proceeds to bash that allows you to change the passwords for all users. A working example can be seen in the picture below. Just write the command:

Restart the computer and can use the new password.
Second way
Recently read about another method of password recovery. Starts the same way, we need to enter GRUB

Once selected, you will see a window with many options, but for password recovery, you only need one – root

If you do not know your user name(perhaps you want to hack someone else’s computer), then enter the command
