[Solved] Mint17 Installer crashed while partitioning disk

Post by hammingweight » Sat Aug 30, 2014 10:36 am

I’ve successfully installed Mint 12 and 13 (32- and 64-bit) before. I’ve just got a Toshiba Satellite L50, i7-4700MQ, 12 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD. It came with windows 8.1 but I don’t want to keep that. I disabled Secure boot and UEFI. I’d now like to install Linux Mint 17. Unfortunately, no matter what I try when creating partitions I get the «Installer crashed screen» which I can’t close. I managed to install a 64 bit version of Ubuntu 12.04 and a 32 bit version of Mint 13. Those installations didn’t detect my ethernet connection.

With Mint 17, my internet connection is fine but no matter what options I select for the disk partitioning, it crashes. If i choose to earse the existing OS, i.e. install only Mint17, the old OS is lost (I don’t have Windows 8.1 any more). Any ideas what’s causing this or where I can find some logging that might offer some insight.

Thanks for the replies!

Thanks, I tried that. It still crashes but I maybe I need to something else: After creating the msdos partition table, should I create partitions for swap, boot, home and then choose «Erase disk and install Linux Mint» or must I select «Something else» as the installation type? I’m just choosing «Erase disk» and that crashes?

If I need to create partitions, I presume that I create 4 partitions for grub, swap, root and home?

Thanks again,
Carl

[SOLVED] grub-efi-amd64-signed failure, Installer Crashed

[SOLVED] grub-efi-amd64-signed failure, Installer Crashed

Post by schnisha95 » Mon Mar 13, 2017 4:12 am

I’m trying to replace Windows 8 Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64-bit on an ASUS laptop. I’m doing this using a bootable USB. So far, here is a list of what was done successfully:

1. Creating a bootable USB.
2. Loading the demo version of Linux Mint.

I start the installation process, and all seems to be going well, until I get the following error message:
«grub-efi-amd64-signed failed to install into /target/. Without GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot»

Читайте также:  Приложение mac os пытается установить по apple

From information based on other other forum posts, I have done the following things:

1. Disabled secure boot
2. Enabled launch CSM (I saw mixed opinions on what to do here, and I’ve tried it both ways, both of which failed. Currently, Launch CSM is enabled)

Currently, there are three boot options in BIOS:

1. Uefi: SanDisk Cruzer Glide 2.01
2. P1: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SN-208FB
3. SanDisk Cruzer Glide 2.01

The first 2 boot options are new, the 3rd one has been around since I inserted the bootable USB. It looks like Windows 8 has been removed from the disk, as that is no longer a boot option, so I don’t really have a back-up OS.

And suggestions? I’m a total newbie, so if there’s any information you need, just ask and I’ll do my best to provide it
Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Found a forum post on here that suggested using boot-repair to fix grub. I opened up the terminal and input the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && boot-repair

boot-repair supposedly fixed everything, and gave me the following URL to give help forums if there is another a failure:
http://paste2.org/wfxD1953

Ran the installer again, same crash with exact same error message.

It was changing the SATA from RAID mode to AHCI mode.

Would you recommend restoring these to the original settings once Linux mint is installed? I am unsure of the consequences of leaving these settings modified..

Installer crashing repeatedly

Installer crashing repeatedly

Post by cur10us » Wed Apr 05, 2017 1:28 am

When trying to install LinuxMint Serena freshly after a headcrash of my PCs HD (18.1, KDE — either from bootable USB stick or DVD) I inevitably experience installer crashes at the end of the installation process. The workarounds I found so far (different file structures on stick and DVD => install from DVD, manipulate some installation related files etc.) doen’t work. Installations of manjaro linux, ubuntu and some others (KDE or other variants) operate smoothly.

Try installing LM 18.1 without the Internet connected.

Seems, M$ have been fiddling around with signed files for efi-boot-loaders because UEFI’s Secure Boot requires OS boot-loaders to be signed/approved by M$.

If the issue comes from installing the bootloader, then you can launch a no-bootloader install with ubiquity -b from a terminal. The installer will launch normally, except it will not install grub.
You can then either reinstall grub manually, or install refind, which lives independently of the OS or OSes.

If the crash is not related to the bootloader, I would try to install LM18 (as I dont remember reports of installer crash for that version), and then upgrade to 18.1 via the software manager. Upgrade is simple, relatively quick (depending mostly on your internet connection), and safe.

@ fabien85:
Thank you very much for your suggestions but I don’t think it’s a ‘signed file’ thing as installations of other distros work like a charm — with the internet connected.

@ michael louwe;
Thank you very much too. It actually *is* a grub-related issue — so I tried the manual installation of grub2 and grub as well as other workarounds I found on the w3 and — surprise, surprise — not a single one of them worked.

To make it short: I really loved LinuxMint for its artwork as well as for its out-of-the-box approach on my old machine — but this sucks. We have 2017 and I honestly don’t want to diy with screwdriver, hammer and cryptical code anymore to get an OS installed. I’ve moved to Kubuntu — ugly but functional as it is — installed it within 15 minutes and write my reply with it right now.

Thanks again for your help. Really appreciate it!

I have the same problem.

My machine is
ASUS H81I-PLUS/CSM (BIOS 2305, the latest)
Intel Pentium G3240
Sandisk SSD Plus 240gb
16GB of RAM
No video card (CPU only)

I tried various things too, nothings seems to work.

This same machine previously had LM 17.3, then LM 18.1 KDE installed and working fine.

But Cinnamon just won’t work. Before the installes, it gives me a message that there seems to be an OS using BIOS while I’m installing UEFI (the disk is empty, I made sure of that), so I choose «Force».
Still doesn’t work.

I tried using GParted to recreate a GPT partition table and partition the drive, didn’t work either.

I’m trying LM 18 to see if it’ll work this time.

I’ve always been using Rufus to make my USB, no problems in the past.

Tried LM 18 Cinnamon.
It fails at installing «grub2».
