Включение и отключение Turbo Boost в Linux

Бывает нужно отключить Turbo Boost или наоборот включить его, так же узнать текущие состояние. В Linux это можно сделать без перезагрузки в BIOS. Мы рассмотрим с помощью каких команд узнать текущие состояние, так же изменим режим работы процессора с «энергосбережение» на «производительность», что заставит процессор работать более эффективно.

1. Текущие состояние Turbo Boost и его смена.

Установим необходимый пакет

Проверим текущие состоние, где -p0 — номер ядра:

1 = деактивирован
0 = активирован

Если получаете ошибку:

Нужно загрузить модуль msr в ядро:

Далее можно правя регистры включать или отключать Turbo Boost, но чтобы было проще, я нашел скрипт, который активирует или деактивирует его, без запоминания сложных регистров. Назовем его turbo-boost.sh:

Дадим права на запуск:

Теперь вы можете активировать/деактивировать Turbo Boost:

2. Управление режимом питания процессора, если используется intel_pstate:

Установим утилиту cpupower:

Узнать текущие состояние 1-го ядра:

Возможные варианты: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/cpu-freq/governors.txt.

Нас интересует режим performance, так как он дает наибольшую производительность. У вас возможно стоит powersave, как было у меня, поэтому сменим его.

На этом все, мы включили Turbo Boost и переключили режим работы процессора на максимальную производительность, так как нам нет смысла экономить электроэнергию на арендованом сервере в Дата Центре.

I’m trying to disable turbo boost, but not successfully. I have a 7th generation intel processor (Kaby Lake), running on 18.3 sylvia, with the latest firmware provided by intel.

I can verify that turbo boost is disabled by setting the content of the file to 1, in «/sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo». But after the minutes it is reset to 0, and the frequency increases again.

For this, I created a script that sets the counter to 1, and that runs as a systemd service. The service was running properly before reinstalling mint (I installed a nice SSD), but now it is not working. It’s the same script, I’m sure.

Let’s go with the script, in /opt/turbo-boost.sh (It’s pretty ugly, to be honest. But before it worked well. )

I would greatly appreciate the help, it is a big problem, everyday things like launching a virtual machine or a simple zipping are literally burning my processor. I hope I wrote my first topic correctly. I wish you can excuse me bad English.

I do not think so, by manually setting the counter to 1, the frequency goes down; along with the temperature. I could even create an alias and remember to execute it in the few minutes that it lasts in 1 (maybe a cron?). But there should be a more elegant way to do it, or that’s what I’m looking for. I hope it does not bother them to believe it’s a my little carp.

Also, as I said, the service worked correctly in my previous mint 18.3 sylvia. It should now be able to be solved via systemd .

I tried that solution, and it worked. But it activates again after a few minutes. And I do not want to have to be running that alias all the time .

There should be a more elegant way, in fact, that service until recently worked perfectly.

What is the make and model of the machine?

I can not get the service to execute the script, which I did in my previous mint. But if I execute that command manually, it works.

I reviewed what you told me, removing the sudo to see if the service could launch it, but it did not work either.

The latest fireware from Intel that’s in Driver Update would probably include the Meltdown/Spectre fixes recently released.

If you uninstall that firmware for a test, does that resolve the problem?

If Yes, I would watch for Asus to provide a BIOS update that includes the fix. I checked, and don’t see one for your laptop yet.

If you uninstall that firmware for a test, does that resolve the problem?

If Yes, I would watch for Asus to provide a BIOS update that includes the fix. I checked, and don’t see one for your laptop yet.

I tried changing the firmware from the tool that mint provides, without success. But I will try again, with all the solutions that have suggested me .

Just to be specific, the firmware/microcode in Mint Driver Update is normally not necessary to install. It replaces the same provide by your BIOS. As long as Asus eventually provides a BIOS update for the Intel Meltdown/Spectre security bugs, it would be best to use their BIOS instead of microcode. The last BIOS I saw at Asus for your Laptop was release in February for Intel ME security bug. That’s not including Meltdown/Spectre bug fixes AFAIK.

If you’re running Mint 18.3, the current Kernels with Meltdown/Spectre mitigation are 4.4 and 4.13. Since you are running Kaby Lake, I’d go with the most current 4.13.

I am new to linux and I am looking forward to moving to it from windows, and I am having a really peculiar problem.
I am using an Asus laptop, and in windows it had a thing called power4gear, in which I could select power plan. And one thing it did was up the GHz limit of processor, from 2.1 GHz to 3.1 GHz.
CPU frequency scaling monitor and it lets me lower the clock speed, but not rise it above 2.2 GHz.

Is there anything, that can bring that functionality in linux?

EDIT: apparently power4gear is just a frontend, what I am looking for is Intel Turbo Boost.
Is it always enabled or is it automatic?

If what you are looking for is some sort of overclocking utility, then I don’t think there is one for Linux. I think I did a quick search last year and found nothing.

As far as Intel’s turbo boost, I have this enabled by default in my UEFI, bios with my mobo and I can change that boost setting higher if I want to. You should be able to get those same settings you had in Windows, but you’d have to do it in the bios.

This we can determine which CPU you’re laptop has and same for GPU.

If you mean Turbo Boost as a setting in your BIOS, then you should check your BIOS if this is enabled or disabled.

Как включить максимальный turbo-boost Linux?

Базовая тактовая частота: 3.33 GHz
Максимальная тактовая частота с технологией Turbo Boost: 3.60 GHz

Я по инструкции с интернета настроил, чтобы у меня постоянно режим работы performance. Я ставил msr-tools и активировал буст через скрипт. Получается раньше у меня Ghz поднимался при нагрузках а в простое был 800 или 1600 Mhz. Когда я сделал все по инструкции из интернета все CPU стали 24/7 работать на частоте 3.33 Ghz. Скажите пожалуйста как сделать, чтобы они всегда работали на 3.60 Ghz))

Как включить максимальный turbo-boost Linux?

До того как автор начнет что-то повышать. Пускай послушает мою мысль. Между 3.33 и 3.6 разница порядка 8%
Общий индекс производительности системы зависит не только от процессора но вообще от совокупной работы всех частей (реакция памяти и скорость кешей L1/L2/L3). Если просто повышать частоту CPU но при этом не менять ничего остального то эффект — нивелируется. Ожидаемого прироста 8% не будет. Будет меньше.

Даже если гипотетически предположить что автор поднял частоту до 5Ghz то и в этом случае удвоения перформанса не будет.

Вобщем послушайте старого программиста на C++ и прочих ассемблерах. Не тратье своё время на фигню. Ваша игра или рендеринг 3Д графики особой разницы не почувствуют. Взамен вы получите потенциальные проблемы. Ведь производитель не собирался делать нестандартный режим номинальным. В этом был свой смысл.

How to enable Turbo-boost

I have a Dell XPS 13 (developer edition) which I bought some years ago with Ubuntu 12.04 preinstalled.

I’ve upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 and since then I noticed my computer became way slower than before on certain heavy tasks.

I also noticed that my computer became much less noisy on heavy tasks, and it looks like my i7’s Turbo boost does not kick in.

Sending work to 4 procs, turbostat shows:

I’m not an expert but it looks like turbo does not work, right?

How am I supposed to make it work? All the stuff I found online only say to use turbostat , but that does not really help to solve the problem.

I use burnK7 to generate CPU load. Note that at the beginning the Bzy_MHz column goes close to 3 Ghz, but then stabilizes near 1 Ghz. Is this normal?

OS: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS 64 bits

Under heavy-load i7z displays:

It says turbo mode is enabled, but the frequency is very low, and I’m sure for the exact same task (here compiling Scala code) the computer was much more noisy/fast before upgrading Ubuntu. Why does it happen?

I noticed that frequency should be within 1.98 GHz and 1.98 GHz. is actually a moving target range, and may be affected by thermald start/stops.

I now get a weird result:

Note that the values in files like /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq seem to be constantly changing.

Some extra turbostat outputs.

The first is at the beginning of a load phase. At the beginning the frequency is high.

The second is after a while under load — the frequency decreases:

At the beginning of the load phase, it seems my CPUs can become very hot, close to 105°, which is the junction temp of CPUs, and then a system prevents them to cook themselves and decrease significantly the frequency to a minimum.

I’d like to have a less hot processor on heavy load, and, when it’s becoming hot, decrease the processor less significantly. Is that possible?
