As its name suggests, Linux Mint LXDE is an unofficial edition of the highly acclaimed Linux Mint operating system built around the LXDE graphical desktop environment. Linux Mint is an open-source operating system derived from the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu.

Only two Linux Mint LXDE versions were released

The LXDE edition of Linux Mint was officially released along with the 11th branch of Linux Mint 11. A second and last release saw the light of day soon after Linux Mint 12 was officially announced.

It is still available for download as a 32-bit Live CD ISO image that supports only applications written for the 32-bit architecture. However, it is usable on both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) computer platforms.

The live system will start automatically in 10 seconds

The Live CD ISO image has been designed to start the live system automatically in 10 seconds from the moment the user boots it from the BIOS of a computer. Advanced boot options like the ability to perform a memory test, boot an existing OS from the local drive or start the live system in compatibility mode, can be access by pressing any key on your keyboard during the 10-second timeout.

LXDE is elegant, traditional and low on resources on this Linux Mint edition

During our tests, LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) proved to be elegant, traditional and low on resources on this Linux Mint edition. It provides users with a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where they can easily navigate the main menu, quickly launch apps and effortlessly interact with running programs.

Install minimal LXDE desktop

I originally added this to a very old thread just in case someone found it doing a search for LXDE desktop on Linux mint.
Since the admins moved it to the Tutorials section I’ve edited it for clarity.

If you have a very old machine the LXDE DE can make a real difference in the speed and responsiveness.

The LXDE DE can be added to any 18.2 Linux Mint Ubuntu based distro.
Probably the rolling Debian distro as well, but I have not tested it yet.
Personally, I prefer starting with Cinnamon.

The minimum specs say 512MB RAM and 5GB HDD available.
I suggest 1GB RAM and 10GB HDD available.

Cinnamon comes with their largest selection of software packages. Not an issue if HDD space is available. I prefer the tools that come with Cinnamon and you will have access to them across any DE you install without effecting the base memory usage. If space is a an issue then start with the XFCE version.

If you only have 512MB Cinnamon will run very slowly until you replace the DE because it will have to rely on the HDD swap file to run. Again, you can start with the XFCE version. Additionally, the XFCE version comes with the Whisker Menu, so the look and feel is so much like Cinnamon you will barely notice the difference.

My results of memory usage on an old Toshiba Satellite with 2.2GHZ AMD CPU, 2GB RAM, and a 160GB HDD was:
Cinnamon: 600MB
XFCE: 386MB
LXDE: 305MB

To install LXDE, go to the Synaptic Package Manager, in Preferences, check «Consider recommended packages as dependencies»

Mark for installation all packages except those that are dbg. I missed it the first time, so make sure you select the LXSession-Logout manager or you won’t be able to logout or shutdown from the menu. Also, review «Mark Recommended for Installation» and «Mark Suggested for Installation» for each package. Especially the main LXDE and LXDE-common packages. There will be software packages listed there designed to run on smaller machines as well as i386 versions. You can skip adding any at this time and go back and add them later if you have issues.

Click on Apply. During the installation it will ask which DM to apply changes to. The one that you are currently using should be the default shown.

Logout of your session.

For LightDM — there will be a drop down icon containing a list of the installed DEs on your system next to your user name. LXDE should be there. Select it and enter your password.

For MDM — The location of the icon containing a list of the installed DEs on your system will depend on the theme that you are running. However, you must click or enter the user name prior to selecting the DE you wish to switch to or it will revert to the Default. Then you can enter your password

An entirely different looking desktop will verify your success. However, in the case of XFCE with Whiskers it looks so similar to Cinnamon that I had to go into a terminal to check.

Htop is a good simple tool to check memory usage that has very little of its own overhead.

I wonder if it will not have many updates to do, because I have internet through a linux mint ruim.quando left lxde julia came with too many updates to fazer.gosto linux mint, but has a lot of updating.

Nice to see that LM 11 LXDE has been released. But we are anxiously waiting for the re-spin of LMDE amd64 as soon as possible. Because I’d like to re-install the LMDE on my system using the new ISOs. LMDE is really wonderful and I can see it’s bright future ahead. Once again I would like to urge the Linux Mint Team to prioritise LMDE and you would surely get increased response and acceptance from people around the world.

I still don’t have cursor at login and Still get two copies of mint-update in the panel. So far is all I noticed.

apparently I fixed the two mint-updates showing up. I had added xcompmgr to /etc/xdg/lxsession/Mint-LXDE/autostart after @/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpload/launch-file-uploader.py and that seems to have been my problem. I moved it before it and all is fine.

I have been using the rc for many weeks now on my old Thinkpad x40(installed to a 8gb sdd drive) Will the release candidate become the final edition by updating or will I need to do a fresh install?

Clem posted on July 11th, which means a little more than a month ago now, in the blog post “Upcoming releases”, that “after the installer is ready we’ll work on respinning new LMDE ISOs for Gnome and Xfce before focusing on Linux Mint 12” and they are not announcing release dates for the both respins of LDME although both were in testing for already 3 weeks at that time, for having time to make some important decisions and releasing a system that makes fun to use and the developers could be proud on delivering.
And he said, too, that a KDE edition based on LMDE maybe could be ready for release in August. So I expect the respins for somewhat around that time, too.
Correct me if I’m absolutly wrong with this expectation!

If you can’t wait to use the new update method – I am using it since a while now and it’s absolutly working great for me – you can simply install your LMDE (Xfce) from the ‘old’ ISOs – if there is the need of a reinstall – and after the install finished and you rebooted into LMDE, it’s easy to directly change the sources.list in /etc/apt/ by
replacing the
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
with
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
and then updating your system with the update manager.
Afterwards you should have running LMDE on the new update method.
This should work without reinstall, too. For me at least it did.

Great news!
All my hope for the future use of Mint in now on the LXDE version.
Because Debian-based is much too complicated for non-experts, and Gnome 3 doesn’t work on old computers.
So please always keep LXDE version based on Ubuntu.
If that too disappears, we have nothing left.

That’s FUD that Ubuntu people spread. Canonical is a company that depends on popularity and that’s not the only way they try to tread on the “competition”.

congrats on the release. please do hurry up with LMDE update =) it’s our (only) new white, black and any other colour given hope. ps cd version of LMDE would be just too kind of you =)

I might have to install LXDE on my machine to try out the desktop. I have been using KDE a lot because the GNOME 2 has a problem with panel items being not added when first booting up. I guess I’m too impatient to find the correct permanent fix for that bug.
I’m doing more testing of LMDE and may very well switch. At this point, the only reason not to is that I definitely want to check out what Mint does with GNOME 3 in the next major release, and that would mean going from Mint 11 to LMDE back to Mint 12 within 4 months. (Unless I dual booted…)

Вышел Linux Mint 11 LXDE

Сегодня 16 августа вышел новый релиз популярного Linux дистрибутива для новичков (и не только) Linux Mint с графической оболочкой LXDE.

Список изменений под катом.

Изменения:

Менеджер приложений

Центр управления приложениями претерпел некоторые косметические изменения.

Теперь при установке конкретного приложения вы сможете увидеть какие именно пакеты будут установлены и сколько места это всё займёт прежде чем нажмёте на кнопку инсталляции.

Менеджер обновлений

Существенно улучшена скорость запуска встроенного менеджера обновлений благодаря переработке кода менеджера обновлений. Кроме того, в списке будут появляться только сами обновления но не зависимости к ним, если установка обновления требует обновления или установки некоторых зависимостей, вас об этом спросят дополнительно. (Это решает проблему Broken Packages).
Кроме того, как и центр управления приложениями, менеджер обновлений претерпел некоторые косметические улучшения.

Утилита для управления рабочим столом

Для тех кого раздражают «печеньки» (прим. переводчика: в оригинале fortune cookies) при открытии коммандной строки, теперь вы можете их выключить прямо из графического интерфейса с помощью специальной утилиты

Графические улучшения

Как и версия с GNOME, версия с LXDE содержит новый вид для скроллбаров для GTK приложений.

Тема оформления так-же претерпела косметические изменения, улучшена поддержка с Deluge, Synaptic, Gimp, Banshee.

Кроме того, обновлён mint-search-addon для браузеров Firefox 4, Chromium, Opera. Теперь он выглядит более вылизанным чем раньше.

Переходим к Plymouth, т.к. он некорректно работал с многими видео драйверами, и поздно подгружался, было решено отказаться от рюшечек в виде красивой загрузки экрана. Теперь загрузка полностью чёрная что по мнению разработчиков, придаёт системе более «профессиональный» вид.

Системные улучшения

apt: Была представлена новая команда apt download, которая скачивает .deb вместе со всеми зависимостями.

Adobe Flash: Flash 10.2 и Flash 10.3 beta теперь можно поставить раздельно. Переключаться между ними можно написав в коммандной строке: «sudo update-alternatives —config libflashplayer.so».
