Ubuntu is distributed on eight types of images described below.

Desktop CD

The desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 384MiB of RAM to install from this CD.

There are two images available, each for a different type of computer:

PC (Intel x86) desktop CD For almost all PCs. Alternate install CD

The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

  • setting up automated deployments;
  • upgrading from older installations without network access;
  • LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
  • installs on systems with less than about 384MiB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably).

In the event that you encounter a bug using the alternate installer, please file a bug on the debian-installer package.

This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Wubi filesystem archive

This is a filesystem image downloaded by Wubi (a system which installs Ubuntu into disk image files on a Windows filesystem). You should not normally need to download it separately.

There are two images available, each for a different type of computer:

PC (Intel x86) Wubi filesystem archive For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure. 64-bit PC (AMD64) Wubi filesystem archive Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.

Я начал знакомство с ОС Ubuntu с релиза — Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex). Помню, тогда еще можно было заказать диски с Linux Ubuntu, которые высылались по почте с наклейками:). Недавно захотелось вспомнить, как это было и загрузить старый релиз. На официальном сайте Ubuntu, можно всегда загрузить самую актуальную версию операционной системы Linux Ubuntu. На данный момент для настольных ПК это Ubuntu 12.10 и Ubuntu 12.04.0 LTS.
Но что делать, если нужно скачать старые релизы Linux Ubuntu?

Вот несколько репозиториев со старыми релизами:

  • http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/ — репозиторий со старыми версиями Linux Ubuntu. Частично поддерживается только релиз Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron). И в серверной версии этого дистрибутива можно будет загрузить обновления безопасности для важных пакетов лишь до апреля 2013 года. Поэтому пользователям этого дистрибутива рекомендуется обновиться до более свежей версии.
Обратите внимание, на то что официальные репозитории для старых версий Ubuntu заморожены, и их не поддерживает Canonical, вследствии чего для них нет обновлений, которые устраняют проблемы безопасности. Не поддерживаемый дистрибутив Linux Ubuntu удаляется с серверов, где хранятся репозитории ОС. Поэтому, если попробовать обновить список доступных пакетов, будет выведено предупреждение о том что основные репозитории недоступны.
Все пакеты из репозитория никуда не исчезают, они просто переносятся на другой сервер. Поэтому при необходимости вы без проблем сможете получить репозиторий для не поддерживаемой версии Ubuntu. Для того, чтобы была возможность обновления для старых версий Ubuntu, нужно открыть файл, содержащий список источников для загрузки пакетов — /etc/apt/sources.lis и заменить все ссылки, отвечающие за официальные репозитории, на: http://old-releases.ubuntu.com.
Официальный сайт Ubuntu рекомендует не использовать не поддерживаемые версии Ubuntu. В самой операционной системе существует автоматическая возможность обновления до более свежей версии Ubuntu. И рекомендуется всегда обновлять свой дистрибутив.

Для справки:

Дистрибутив с английского distribute означает распространять. И, соответственно дистрибутив есть форма распространения программного обеспечения.
Репозиториий можно кратко охарактеризовать как хранилище. Обычно репозитории представляют из себя место хранения и поддержки каких-либо данных. Эти файлы доступны для распространения по сети.
Кодовое имя и версия — каждый релиз имеет свое кодовое имя и версию, которые зависят от года и месяца его выхода. Как видно выше, каждое кодовое имя, содержит два английских слова, которые начинаются с одной и той же букву. А с версии 6.06 первые буквы каждого из слов, формируются по латинскому алфавиту.
LTS — обычно новые версии дистрибутива выходят каждые полгода. На протяжении полутора лет эти версии поддерживаются и для них выходят обновления безопасности. А вот версии LTS выходят раз в два года. И потом как серверная так и десктопная версии, поддерживаются на протяжении пяти лет. Срок поддержки изменился с выходом версии 12.04. Поддержка LTS-версий стала осуществляться на протяжении пяти лет независимо от версии. Раньше десктопная версия поддерживалась в течение трех лет, а серверная в течение пяти лет.
Загрузив любой из дистрибутивов вы на 50%, готовы к созданию загрузочной флешки с этим дистрибутивом.
