hope this isn’t to nooby.

How do I localize my wine (windows) system to japanese? (i.e. correct Kanji/Kana rendering) I found the WineLocale page, but it’s for Ubuntu, and the shell commands are quite different, and I’m not that versed with shells amyway.

Basically I want to do the same on OSX; maybe there is a page out there explaining everything, but if so, I haven’t been able to find it.

Sorry for bothering if the answer is too simple (I wish. )

Are you attempting to try to run Japanese at the same time you are
running MacOSX in a different language?

This would be something to discuss with Apple.

Actually, I want to test a japanese windows program inside wine. Text rendering inside the program is OK (I seem to have the necessary fonts), but during installation i see only ASCII gibberish. Same with the program’s menu and system messages. So troubleshooting on the Windows side is impossible.

I don’t want to change my OSX localization, only the Windows (inside wine) localization. (It’s wine in Win98 mode, btw) Maybe there’s something fundamental about it I just don’t see.

LANG=ja_JP.utf8 wine program.exe

I believe that someone mentioned earlier that this might not work under OSX, but I’m not sure so it’s worth a shot.

I believe that someone mentioned earlier that this might not work under OSX, but I’m not sure so it’s worth a shot.

It doesn’t work on OSX. The system’s locale needs to be set to whatever user wants.

I think I know what the OP wants:

The Mac is set to something like American English.

The program to be displayed is Japanese.

I do think this is doable, but the appropriate variables have to be set
before running Wine, just like you do in Linux (or any other UNIX for
that matter).

Davince may be correct in the running, but I don’t have a Japanese
program to test this with.

It doesn’t work on OSX. The system’s locale needs to be set to whatever user wants.

I just tried this with Wordpad to switch the language to French:

LANG=fr_FR.utf8 wine wordpad

The menus and other items displayed were American English.

Looks like it does not work.

Correct, vitamin. This makes changing the language for a Mac a real
bother.

I guess it is time to file an RFE to get this updated?

Hmmm. The message seems to imply that using LC_MESSAGES would work.
However, it did not. I’ll read more on the thread in Wine-devel.

Only if it wasn’t set to begin with. Ken Thomases mad a big deal about
that when I first submitted my patch.

On that line, you’ll notice that the third parameter to setenv() is 0.
That parameter tells the OS not to overwrite the value of LANG if it’s
already set.

Wow! That’s a lot of activity I’ve caused. Hope you are onto something.

Perhaps I should clarify what I tried to do:

— My MacBookPro is set to German
— Take a Program written for Japanese Windows
— run the installer with wine: I get all sorts of gibberish
— by try and error, install program
— run program: in-program text rendering is japanese, program messages (like what I suppose means «Would you really like to quit? Yes/No») are ASCII gibberish

When I try to set the language variable preceding «wine program.exe» as described in this thread, I get:

(I’ve read somewhere that some programs won’t even install on non-Japanese systems, which can be fixed in XP by localizing it from System Preferences)

It seems that the method in the link I posted solves that problem, but it is written for Ubuntu, and I don’t know enough about Linux to emulate these things on OSX. File structure is different, as are many shell commands. [/code]

The system I tested it on was 32-bit Ubuntu Feisty 7.04.

The guide is provided at users’ own risk. I will try to provide support and answer questions in the thread, but if you somehow type something wrong and send your OS spiraling into /dev/null, don’t blame me.

UPDATE: The new WineLocale 0.41 attached to this thread also supports Arabic, Greek, Hebrew and Russian. It is no longer CJK only. However, because this thread is marked CJK in Wine, I won’t add the directions to it. Download the file and follow the extra steps in INSTALL to get these languages working.

OK, the web proved totally unhelpful for me to figure this out, so I imagine some of your out there in Ubuntu user-land are having the same problems.

Ordinarily, running a CJK application in Wine results in lots of garbled text. On a good day, you will get empty boxes. On a bad day, it looks like the ASCII table exploded.

No more. I put together a little shell script called WineLocale (after Microsoft’s AppLocale which solves the same problem on Windows). So far, it only supports Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. I don’t know enough about Hebrew, Arabic and Russian to add those. If you want to help out, by all means. Read

/.wineloc/patches/HOWTO after installing.

The below directions are all in WineLocale’s INSTALL file, but I’ve repeated them here because they have great generic use for anyone wondering about locales.

Just a note, purgelocales is not a solution because it refuses to show non-ASCII compatible mappings (for example, SJIS, which all pre-XP Japanese applications are).

Step 1: Getting the Locales

How do I change the locale of Wine to Japanese on Ubuntu 14.04?

I wish to run a game called «Morenatsu» on Ubuntu 14.04 via Wine. Morenatsu requires Applocale in Windows. Can I run Morenatsu in Applocale in Wine?

You can always run the game from the terminal instead of installing any other app and specify the language in the command:

In my case I wanted to play Saya no Uta (Japanese game with Japanese fonts) but it always showed squares and other non-Japanese symbols. I used to solve this kind of problem with AppLocale in Windows, but since I couldn’t find an AppLocale replacement for Ubuntu then I launched the game through the terminal like this

I remember that there was a tool called WineLocale that was made to mimic the functionality of AppLocale. But I have never really used it and the project site doesn’t seem to offer any downloads.

Локализация Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS

Локаль (locale или локализация) в Linux определяет, какой язык и какой набор символов (кодировку), пользователь видит в терминале. Посмотрим, как проверить текущие настройки языка и кодировки, как получить список всех доступных локалей, как сменить язык и кодировку для текущей сессии или установить их постоянно.

Для тех, кому лень читать всю статью до конца — чаще всего для локализации консоли достаточно повторно сконфигурировать пакет locales :

Сначала будут созданы нужные локали (их выбрать на первом экране), потом установлена локаль по умолчанию (ее выбрать на втором экране).

Текущие настройки языка

Посмотрим информацию о текущем языковом окружении:

Теперь посмотрим список всех установленных языков и кодировок:

Есть только системная локаль C.UTF-8 , которая присутствует всегда. А нам надо добавить еще две локали — en_US.UTF-8 и ru_RU.UTF-8 .

Добавить новую локаль

Смотрим список всех поддерживаемых (доступных для установки) локалей:

Устанавливаем нужные локали — en_US.UTF-8 и ru_RU.UTF-8 :

Второй способ установить локали — расскомментровать нужные строки в файле /etc/locale.gen

И просто выполнить команду locale-gen без указания локалей:

Быстрая локализация

До сих пор мы все делали ручками, но если лень — можно просто повторно сконфигурировать пакет locales . Сначала будут созданы нужные локали (их нужно выбрать на первом экране), потом установлена локаль по умолчанию (ее нужно выбрать на втором экране).

Удалить лишние локали

После установки (генерации) локали, она помещается в архив /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive . Файл архива — это файл, отображаемый в память, который содержит все локали системы; он используется всеми локализованными программами. Посмотреть список локалей в архиве можно с помощью команды:

Обратите внимание на название локали — ru_UA.utf8 , а не ru_UA.UTF-8 . Если неправильно указать локаль — она не будет удалена из архива:

Even on plain WINEPREFIX I am unable to get Polish-specific chars to work.
On unix (Arch x64) everytching works fine.

Wine is setting wrong codepage in registry ( in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Fonts\Codepages apears «1252,437» while it should be «1252,437»)

doesn’t do the job. Both on wine wine-1.1.43 and wine-1.2_rc2-1

Help me pleas

There is a way to force this, but since I’m on a Mac it does not work.
I actually have to change the codepage at the top of the screen for this
to work.

Yeah, sorry that last reply of mine didn’t make sense (as you’ve already tried that).

If I start with pl_PL.UTF-8 on a clean .wine I get 1250,852 in the registry. (1252,437 normally for me).

So sorry, no idea what is wrong on your box.

Sorry, it should be, for pl_PL.utf8: 1250,852. But in registry i have 1252,437 ( en_Us.C)

So there a way to force wine to use codepage and ignore LC_* LANG etc. ? Where can i find it?

Might it all because wine looks for UTF-8 and ignores utf8?
I don’t know if it has something in common but I found that glibc converts UTF-8 to utf8, and programs should use its functions to get locale and charsets not system vars.

Looks like this is in your registry. Can you check what locale is set
