Manual USB camera settings in Linux

There are many UVC compatible webcams most of them support full auto mode but only a few of these cameras provide extended manual white balance, gain and exposure control. Kurokesu C1 family (C1, C1 PRO, C1 MICRO), Logitech C920 and Brio are the ones that can be trusted.

There are few tools to work with USB cameras in Linux. Probably V4L2-CTL is the most advanced and recommended command line tool for advanced users.

Fresh Linux might be missing utility, install it with simple command:

Note two interfaces for Kurokesu C1 camera – this is dual stream output. One video device is for regular YUYV/MJPEG compressed output another is for h.264. You can open both of them at the same time with different programs (for example h.264 for live streaming, MJPG for onboard recording or computer vision processing)

In some cases it is necessary to switch parameters in certain order for parameter to be set. For example change manual white balance control before setting fixed value:

Kurokesu C1 extension unit and firmware customization

Besides standard UVC control it is possible to customize Kurokesu C1 family camera firmware to meet specific customer needs, for example:

• Set default UVC control values
• Edit de-noise parameters
• Edit USB frame size
• Edit MJPEG compression rate
• Edit h.264 bitrate
• Set low light behavior (lower down to 2 frames per second automatically or maintain stable frame rate)

Camera Extension Unit is designed for Linux and allows to alter even more controls not covered by UVC protocol (for example: spot/center/frame measuring mode).

Webcam with manual focus and shallow DOF on Linux

I use Linux, so much software doesn’t work. I’m reliant on standard camera and control software that comes with Linux.

I use a webcam for teams and zoom calls but the automatic background blur function continually messes up my hair and when I hold up something to the camera for other people to read, it knocks it out of focus.

It is clear that I need an easy to use hardware solution (preferably fully optical) that doesn’t rely on software.

I need a webcam that has manual focus and shallow depth of field so that only what is a few feet in front of the camera is in focus and everything else is blurred. or at least a camera that has this ability but then has a switch (perhaps to move a manual lens into an array) and manual focus controls on board.

Please read my requirements again. no software.

Logitech software doesn’t work on Linux. We’re a forgotten arm of operating system that Logitech doesn’t care about. And software mucks up the image anyway.

Among gamers (like myself) Linux is starting to take the lead over Windows, especially since Windows 11 virtual environment is slowing games down by up to 27% in some cases.

I survive with my Logitec equipment by taking it to someone elses machine and programming it there, then hooking it up to my Linux systems, eg. my Hyperion Fury settings are kept on board the mouse.

It also means I can’t use the RGB keyboards because Linux is not supported.

But this is changing. Linux is coming up in gaming and Logitech will loose out if it continues to not develop Linux software.

I really, really hope that some day Logitech will give me the software I need to control my equipment. So much of your hardware I just can’t buy right now, and I have to make do as best I can.
