Многие пользователи ПК во время работы с какой-либо программой могут столкнуться с «вылетом» указанной программы, и появившимся сообщением «Out of memory». Возникшая проблема может иметь множество причин, начиная от банального недостатка памяти на пользовательском ПК, и заканчивая некорректной работой с памятью какой-либо программы.

Причины появления дисфункции

Сообщение «Out of memory» (в переводе дословно «вне памяти», или «недостаточно памяти») обычно возникает при недостатке памяти на пользовательском компьютере. В частности же, в появлении данной ошибки «виновен» следующий набор факторов:

• Недостаток памяти RAM на вашем ПК (рабочей памяти, планки которой установлены на материнской плате вашего компьютера). Если на вашем компьютере установлен всего 1 гигабайт памяти, вы будете встречаться с описываемой ошибкой довольно часто. Нормальным же ныне считается наличие на компьютере 4 гигабайт памяти и выше;
• Недостаток места на жёстком диске.

Когда вашему компьютеру не хватает физической R.A.M. памяти, он заимствует часть места на жёстком диске, и создаёт так называемую «виртуальную память». Система временно хранит в такой виртуальной памяти ту часть данных, которая не помещается в памяти обычной. Такие данные обычно хранятся в файле «pagefile.sys», размер которого может увеличиваться или уменьшаться в зависимости от специфики работы вашей ОС. Если на диске будет недостаточно места, файл «pagefile.sys» не сможет расти, и пользователь получит рассматриваемую ошибку.

• При одновременном запуске на ПК большого количества программ, каждая из которых бронирует часть памяти ПК под свои задачи;
• При запуск большого количества вкладок браузера. Веб-навигаторы уровня «Firefox» или «Google Chrome» способны занимать от 500 мегабайт до 1 гигабайта памяти под свой функционал, при этом число открытых вкладок и соответствующей обслуживающей памяти может быть ограничено системой. Специалисты Майрософт называют такую проблему «the desktop heap limitation» — «ограничение кучи рабочего стола»);
• Некорректная работа с памятью ряда программ (наиболее часто это игровые программы);
• Не оптимальный размер файла подкачки, с которым работает система.

Как исправить ошибку «Out of memory»

Для решения указанной проблемы рекомендую сделать следующее:

1. Перезагрузите ваш ПК, и запустите требуемую программу вновь. Возможно, что проблема имеет случайный характер, и более повторяться не будет;
2. Перед запуском нужной программы закройте другие ненужные программы (браузер, музыкальный или видео плеер, текстовый или графический редактор, мессенджер и так далее);
3. Если проблема возникает во время серфинга в сети, закройте всё множество вкладок вашего браузера (при наличии), оставив лишь одну или две.

Альтернативным вариантом решения проблемы является установка соответствующего фикса от Майкрософт. Или использование расширений или дополнений для браузера уровня «The Great Suspender» для «Google Chrome», хорошо работающего с ненужными вкладками браузера.

• Добавьте оперативной памяти на ваш ПК. Если у вас на компьютере установлено 1-2 гигабайта памяти, будет оптимальным довести её объём до 4 гигабайт (а для 64-битных Виндовс 7, 8 и 10 версии рекомендую 8 и более гигабайт);
• Убедитесь, что на вашем жёстком диске (или SSD) достаточно свободного места. При необходимости, освободите диск от ненужных файлов;
• Используйте инструмент командной строки BCDEdit для изменения параметров загрузки системы. Если у вас на ПК установлена Виндовс 7 и более, запустите командную строку от имени администратора на Виндовс 7 и Виндовс 10, и в ней наберите:

bcdedit/set IncreaseUserVa 3072

И нажмите на ввод, и перезагрузите ваш ПК. Функционал данной команды позволяет выделить пользовательским приложениям 3 гигабайта оперативной памяти для работы. В некоторых системах этого может быть слишком много, потому если после ввода данной команды система начала чаще сбоить, то введите в командной строке от имени администратора:

bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 2560 — что позволит задействовать 2,5 гигабайта вместо ранее забронированных 3.

Если ситуацию этим исправить не удалось, верните настройки на состояние по умолчанию:

bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa

Увеличьте объём файла подкачки. Нажмите кнопку «Пуск», в строке поиска введите sysdm.cpl и нажмите ввод. В открывшемся окне настроек системы выберите «Дополнительно» — «Быстродействие» — «Параметры» — «Дополнительно» — «Виртуальная память» — «Изменить». Снимите галочку с опции автоматического размера, поставьте галочку на «Указать размер», и поставьте исходный размер в 8192, и максимальный в 8192. Затем выберите «Задать»;

Установите нужный размер файла подкачки

Если ошибка возникает при использовании игровой программы, перейдите в её графические настройки, и выберите их минимальные значения;

Произведите правильную настройку «Java». Для решения проблем с игровой программой «Майнкрафт» перейдите в Панель управления Виндовс, найдите там «Java» и запустите данную среду исполнения. Нажмите на кнопку «View», затем дважды кликните на «Runtime Parametres». Введите туда –Xms256m – Xmx3072m (или больше). Xms – это минимальное выделение ОЗУ, Xmx – максимальное. Значение Xmx рекомендуют устанавливать на процентов 70-80% от общего объёма ОЗУ. Примените изменения, и перезагрузите ваш ПК.

Ошибка «Out of memory» может иметь множество причин, связанных как с физическим недостатком памяти на ПК, так и другими детерминантами, изложенными мной выше. This is the basic step to fix low memory error. By default, Windows would make an attempt to increase the size of your paging file whenever it falls short on memory. However, you can also manually increase it to a maximum size that is decided by the RAM that you have installed. Please note that increasing the paging file memory size only solves the problem temporarily, and if relying upon it for long can cause your programs to run slowly. This is because the computer is programmed to process information from your RAM faster than it does from the paging file. Therefore, resort to increasing the paging file only as a temporary fix for low memory error.

2. Get a RAM upgrade

This is another option available to users to fix low memory errors. Every system has a maximum capacity for RAM ports. For the ones using 2GB RAM, they can check for another port to install the RAM manually, and so on, as this solves the problem of low memory successfully. The difference is visible the moment you install the RAM. Install, reboot, and get going.

3. Check for Memory Leak

It is possible that one of your programs is not releasing the memory that has been using after its completion. This can cause the device to run slowly. You can check for the program that is using the most memory by performing the following steps:

• Open the Task Manager with a right-click on the taskbar, and click on «Start Task Manager».
• Choose the «Processes» tab.
• If you are looking to sort programs by their memory usage, choose «Memory (Private Working Set)».

Event Viewer can come in handy if one is looking to check for program errors and other relevant troubleshooting information.

• Open Event Viewer by clicking over the «Start» button, follow it up by clicking «Control Panel», «System and Security», and then «Administrative Tools», and then double click on «Event Viewer». You could be prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, and you can type it here.

Why Does the Low Memory Error Occur?

It is important to understand the reason behind the occurrence of low memory error. Given the complex functions performed by our PC, the reasons can be varying.

Firstly, you must understand that your computer has 2 different types of memory. These include the Random Access Memory (RAM), and virtual memory. Every program that you use on your PC uses the RAM. However, when there isn’t enough RAM for the program you are trying to run, Windows, for a brief while, moves the information that would be otherwise stored on your RAM to your hard disk and stores it in the form of a paging file.

The information that is temporarily stored in a paging file is also referred to as virtual memory. So, using the virtual memory, that is to move information in and out from the paging file, liberates enough space from your RAM in order to assist the programs to run simultaneously.

So, when does the low memory occur?

Low memory occurs when the device you are working runs out of RAM and also is low on virtual memory. This can happen in a situation where you burden your device with programs that cannot be supported by its RAM. Imagine running a graphic program that requires a RAM of 3 GB on a system that only has a 2GB RAM. Another instance when low memory error can occur is when the programs do not free the memory they have been using after their completion. We call this process memory overuse or memory leak.

Low memory error is definitely not the end of the world. However, you can ward it off by following the basic steps. The process is more or less the same for all the variants of Windows. Low memory error should be tackled at the earliest as you don’t want your functioning computer to suffer. This issue could be caused due to some incorrect settings. Sometimes, you might face such issues if there is a memory leak in one of the programs. If you use Task Manager (Process Tab) you can see which program is using all the CPU cycles, and all the Memory? A badly written program may take ever increasing memory resources the longer it is running on the machine. . I would suggest you to try these steps and check:

First, I would suggest you to run the ‘System maintenance’ troubleshooter which can automatically scan and perform the required maintenance tasks, and also fix any incorrect settings that could be causing issues. Refer to these steps to run this troubleshooter:

a) Press Windows key +F to bring up the search Charms bar.

b) Select settings in the drop down menu below search and type Troubleshooting.

c) Click on Troubleshooting and select the view all option on the left pane.

d) Click on System maintenance troubleshooter and follow the prompts.

Method 2:

If the issue persists I would suggest you to increase this virtual memory and check if it helps.

Windows8 automatically manages virtual memory and paging file size by default. The virtual memory set by default is approximately 70% of the recommendation.

You need to increase this virtual memory. Make it equivalent to your RAM size for the initial size and twice of the initial size in maximum size and make sure you have the same amount of free space in your hard drive in each drive.

a. Press windows + R key from the keyboard.

b. Select the option Control Panel and All control panel items then System.

c. Click on Advanced system settings.

d. Under performance , click on settings.

e. Go to Advanced tab, Under Virtual memory , click on Change.

f. UN-check » Automatically manage paging file size for all drives » check box.

g. Select your windows drive (where OS is installed).

h. Click on Custom size radio button.

i. Set Initial size equivalent to your RAM size in MB.

j. Set Maximum size to twice of your RAM size in MB.

k. Click on Set.

l. Click on OK thrice.

m. Restart your system.

Method 3 :

I would suggest you to boot the computer in Safe mode and check if the issue persists.

Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs don’t run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed.

If the issue does not persist in safe mode, then perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

How to troubleshoot problems using clean boot in Windows:

Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot “to reset computer as usual.

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to check the Event viewer logs for error logs around recent date and time when you got this error to find out the root cause of this issue. Refer to these steps:

a) Go to the Start Screen, type in Event Viewer. This will bring up the Event Viewer tile, Click to open the event viewer.

b) In the left pane, expand out Windows Logs. Click on Application log and highlight the first event in the log and use your arrow keys to scroll down.

c) Most of your event will be Information. You may see Yellow Warnings or Red Errors. If you see any red error, you can double click on it to bring it up and copy the contents in your reply.
