Mac os bootcamp no bootable device

Question: Q: How to fix «No bootable device, insert boot disk and press enter» ?

I tried to use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 7 to my Mac mini (mid-2011, i5 2.3Ghz, with most updated OS X Yosemite), and the Boot Camp Assistant formatted my USB drive and copied the ISO image of Windows 7 into it successfully. However, when the Mac mini automatically rebooted, it showed the message «No bootable device, insert boot disk and press enter». I tried to switch off the mac mini and hold down the alt/option button when I turned on it again, but no any menu appeared (only the same error message was displayed).

I also did some research on internet and found some experts indicated that the USB drive is using MBR (for old BIOS) rather than GPT, and UEFI only recognizes GPT, so it isn’t bootable. Is that exactly the problem? The USB drive was formatted by Boot Camp Assistant actually, why would this happen?

Now I don’t know how to fix this problem. I cannot boot into OS X now. Anyone can help?

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), mid-2011, i5 2.3Ghz

Thank you. I have successfully installed Windows 7.

I tried the following steps:

1. bought a new SanDisk Cruzer USB flash drive

2. formatted USB flash drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID Partition Table by using Disk Utility

3. ran Boot Camp Assistant to remove previous BOOTCAMP partition

4. used another Windows PC to make ISO image from my DVD again

5. ran Boot Camp Assistant again to start making USB boot drive, partitioning and installation

(Boot Camp Assistant formatted my USB flash drive again as FAT32 with MBR . 🙂)

6. ran Windows Installer from my USB flash drive successfully when my Mac Mini automatically rebooted

7. used Startup Manager (by pressing Alt/Option on start up) to choose booting from BOOTCAMP partition when the Windows Installer finished an initial installation and auto-restarted my Mac

(I found that I cannot show Startup Manager before because of my KVM. When I plugged my keyboard directly to my Mac Mini without KVM, the Alt/Option button worked again when I pressed it on start up . . 🙂 )

8. finally installed Boot Camp and the attached drivers manually from my USB flash drive into my Windows 7.

I still had to use Startup Manager to boot into Windows every time until I installed Boot Camp driver.

Thanks very much for your help. I might not be confident to try again without your suggestions and comments.

Bootcamp USB drive: No bootable device

I’m trying to install Windows 10 in BootCamp on my 2012 Macbook Pro, running mac OS Sierra, but fail to boot from the USB drive on which the Windows install tools reside. The error message I get is No bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key .

What I did so far:

  • Tried to create a boot medium using Boot Camp assistant. This failed, because on the ISO-Image I have there is a file install.wim, which is too large for a FAT32-formatted drive.
  • Tried to manually create the boot medium, using the above ISO-image, formatting the drive using ExFAT. This resulted in the above error message. I did some research and it seems that ExFAT is not bootable?

The most promising attempt was the following:

  1. So, since I have another device running Windows 10 available, I ended up installing Microsoft’s MediaCreationTool and creating a FAT32-based bootable USB drive.
  2. Using this drive; I was once able to boot into the Windows 10 Installation. Since I was not able to quickly obtain a product key and thought I needed one for the installation, I canceled the installation at this point.
  3. After cancelling the installation, the Windows partition stopped showing up as a startup disk!
  4. I restarted the Boot Camp procedure, erasing- and re-creating the Bootcamp-partition.
  5. The USB drive stopped being recognised; I again get the above error message No bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key . In macOS the USB drive shows up without any problem.

I did a few more attempts (each time erasing and creating the bootcamp partition; trying to create another USB tool), but always with the same result.

Any help in getting this to run is appreciated. If possible, I’d like to avoid updating to mac OS Catalina.

The Boot Camp Assistant works under very strict conditions. Failure occurs when any one of the conditions is ignored. In your case, the condition was using Sierra. Apple expects you to install the latest version of macOS available for your model Mac.

The firmware needed to allow booting from ExFAT formatted media is installed when upgrading to High Sierra. Since you are using Sierra, your Mac probably has not had this firmware upgrade. The default Windows 10 ISO file, downloaded from Microsoft when running macOS, contains the file install.wim , which is to large to store in a FAT32 formatted volume. However, the Windows 10 ISO or USB flash drive, created using the media creation tool, substitutes a install.esd file for the install.wim file. Basically, .esd files use a better compression algorithm than .wim files. The result is the install.esd file can be stored on FAT32 formatted volumes. You could use a ExFAT (or maybe FAT32) formatted flash drive to transfer the Windows 10 ISO, created using the media create tool, from machine running Windows to your Mac running Sierra.

Note: I do not know, if the install.wim file contains the same data as the install.esd file. There may very well be extra files in the install.wim version that Macs need that does not exist in the install.esd version.

Your model Mac is designed to BIOS boot Windows 7 and UEFI boot Windows 10. When BIOS booting Windows, the installation drive needs to be hybrid partitioned. The Boot Camp Assistant automatically determines, if hybrid partitioning is needed for a Windows installation by inspecting the Windows USB flash drive. Of course, the assumption is the files on the flash drive were created by the Boot Camp Assistant. From the way you worded your question, apparently the only files on the flash drive were put there by the Microsoft media creation tool.

The GUI Windows installer will only install for BIOS booting when the installation drive is hybrid partitioned, otherwise Windows will be installed for UEFI booting. Your model Mac should install Windows 10 to UEFI boot, primarily because the Windows Support Software is designed for a UEFI booting Windows 10.

Note: The message No bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key is a indication the firmware is trying to BIOS boot the Windows installation media. The media should be UEFI booting.

  • Try using the ISO file which can be created using the media create tool.
  • Upgrade to a newer version of macOS.
  • Install Windows using the macOS and Windows CLI. This option requires many steps which were omitted from this answer.

Helpful answers

You may have USB3.0 ports on the Mac, but the Windows 7 installer has no USB3 drivers. You need to use a USB2 flash drive, otherwise it will not work.

The Apple Bootcamp drivers will support USB3 disks after Windows 7 is installed and Bootcamp drivers are fully installed.

Can you post the output of sudo fdisk /dev/disk0?

Bootcamp partition requires enough contiguous disk space to move partitions and create a Bootcamp partition. You may enough free disk space, but not enough contiguous disk space.

Please try Verify (and Repair) of the disk via Disk Utility and retry Bootcamp. If it does not work, create a backup of OSX, erase your internal disk and restore from Time Machine backup and test Bootcamp again.

of course, i send to you reply:

If you notice, you have MBR entry at the fourth position,

4: 0B 1023 254 63 — 1023 254 63 [1701572608 — 251951104] Win95 FAT-32

but no corresponding GPT at GPT4. There should be one for Windows to install. You were trying to create a 125GB Windows partition, but BCA failed, because you do not have enough contiguous disk space on your 1TB drive. It would have worked when you had enough contiguous disk space.

Can you try the Verify/Repair in Disk Utility and try BC again?

Nov 19, 2014 1:04 PM

repair did not need to be done, because i seen that everithing fine, i try to reinstall bootcamp. But only thing what i can not to do is after restart to continue in installation. Do you understand to my problem?

also i can’t see the usb boot disk after i restart and hold option key. there is only Macintosh HD and Recovery HD. nowhere are windows boot disk made by bootcamp.

You will need to run Bootcamp Assistant again and try to recreate the Windows partition. You do not have one where Windows can be installed.

On a working system, the GPT is

Nov 19, 2014 1:39 PM

This looks much better. Have you tried installing Windows? Do you get any error messages? Are you sing a USB2 drive or a USB3 drive?

Nov 19, 2014 1:50 PM

Thank you very much for your time. i try to recreated whole process one more time. right now i create 100gb partition for windows by bootcamp assistant. restart and still the same, the installation process end with the message that no bootable device.

Is normal that i am not be able to see the boot usb disk in after restart (option) view? only Macintosh HD and Recovery HD? nowhere windows usb boot disk

Do i whole process right?

i create partition for windows in bootcamp and then restart and nothing doing? i try to restart and hit «c» key but nothing changed. still the same message.

i have iMac with 4x USB 3.0 and flash disc (usb 3.0)

this is not normal. this must be bug nothing else.
