Change the name of your macOS user account and home folder
You can rename your macOS user account and home folder, which were named when the account was created.
The name of your macOS user account and the name of your home folder must both be the same. Changing these names does not change or reset the password of your user account.
Because doing this incorrectly could damage your account and prevent you from logging in, you should back up your important data before proceeding.
First rename the home folder
- Log out of the account you’re renaming, then log in to a different administrator account. (If you don’t have another administrator account, you can create one in Users & Groups preferences.)
- Open the Users folder on the startup disk. It contains the home folder for each user. To get there, you can choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu bar, then enter /Users .
- Rename the user’s home folder without using any spaces in the new name. You’ll be prompted to enter the administrator name and password that you used to log in. If you’re using file sharing to share the home folder, you won’t be able to rename it until you stop sharing the folder.
Then rename the account
While still logged out of the account you’re renaming, follow these additional steps:
- Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
- Click
, then enter the administrator name and password that you used to log in.
- From the list of users on the left, Control-click the user you’re renaming, then choose Advanced Options.
- Change the “Account name” field to match the new name of the home folder. It should have no spaces.
- The account name also appears in the “Home directory” field, after /Users/ . Change that account name to match the new name of the home folder.
- If you want to change the full name associated with your account, update the ”Full name” field as well. It can be any name, and you can use either the full name or the account name to log in to your Mac or make changes that require your name and password.
- Click OK, then restart your Mac.
- Log in to the renamed account, then verify that your old files and folders are visible and the account is working as expected.

Question: Q: How to change Users name in Terminal > Users.
Hi, I am trying to change my Users name from firstnamelastname to mac on my OSX10.7.5.
I went to Terminal > Users and tried to rename, however upon reboot, the Terminal > Users always brings back the folder firstnamelastname.
How can this be changed?
I did go to Mac > Apple > System Preferences. > System > Users & Groups > Current User. This shows the firstnamelastname has been changed to Mac.
However I need the Terminal files in /Users also changed from firstnamelastname to Mac.
Mac 10.6.8-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Thanks for the reply.
I went to Mac > Apple > System Preferences. > System > Users & Groups > Login Options > Click the lock to make changes. > Password: > Unlock > Show fast user switching menu as > changed Full Name to Short Name > Click the lock to prevent further changes. > Apple > Restart.
The Mac still had firstnamelastname in Terminal > /Users rather than the name Mac.
I then went to Mac > Apple > System Preferences. > System > Users & Groups > Login Options > Click the lock to make changes. > Password: > Unlock > Show fast user switching menu as > changed Short Name to Full Name > Click the lock to prevent further changes. > Apple > Restart.
The Mac still had firstnamelastname in Terminal > /Users, rather than the name Mac?
I think the /Users folder with the folder firstnamelastname is some kind of permanent folder when I first set up the Mac, however I would still like to change the folder name, so maybe I need to set up the Mac like new or something. how to do that if there isn’t a way of changing the folder name?

Change your computer’s name or local hostname on Mac
Your computer’s name and local hostname are used to identify your computer on your local network.
Change your computer’s name
Your computer’s name is displayed at the top of the Sharing preferences pane.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu
> System Preferences, then click Sharing.
If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
Type a new name in the Computer Name field.
Change your computer’s local hostname
The local hostname, or local network name, is displayed beneath the computer’s name at the top of the Sharing preferences pane. It identifies your Mac to Bonjour-compatible services.
The local hostname is your computer’s name with .local added, and any spaces are replaced with hyphens. For example, if your computer’s name is My Computer, your local hostname is My-Computer.local. Local hostnames aren’t case sensitive, so my-computer.local is the same as My-Computer.local.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu
> System Preferences, then click Sharing.
If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
Click Edit, then enter a new local hostname.
If your Mac has the exact name of another Mac on your local network, a number is added to the local network name.

How to Change Your Mac User Name
Make a mistake in your user account name? Fix it now
What to Know
- From Finder, select Go >Go to Folder, enter /Users, then click the folder and press Enter to type a new name.
- Go to System Preferences >Users & Groups, Control+click the user account, select Advanced Options, and update the Account name.
- Restart your Mac to confirm regular file and folder access.
This article explains how to change the user name on a Mac. Instructions apply to OS X Yosemite (10.10.5) and later.
To ensure you don’t lose file access, back up important data on your Mac with a Time Machine backup or your preferred backup method.
Rename Your Home Folder
The name of your user account and your home folder must be the same for your account to work properly, so the first step is to change the home folder name.
You can’t rename an account you’re logged in to. Log in to a different account with admin permissions or create a spare administrator account. After setting up the second administrator account, complete the following steps.
From the Apple menu, select Log Out UserName (where UserName is the name of the account you want to change).
From the login screen, sign in to a different or new administrator account.
From the Finder menu, select Go > Go to Folder, type /Users, and then choose Go to navigate to your home folder.
The Users folder contains your current home folder, which has the same name as your account name. Write down the name of your current home folder to reference later.
Select the home folder to rename and press Enter to edit it.
If you shared your home folder, you must stop sharing the folder before you can rename it.
Type the new name (without spaces) you want to use for your home folder, press Enter, and use the administrator password you used to log in when prompted.
Write down the name of the new home folder to reference when renaming your account.
Rename Your Account
After you edit the home folder name, stay signed out of the account you’re renaming, and complete the following steps.
From the Apple menu, select System Preferences > Users & Groups.
In Users & Groups, select the lock icon and type the password for your spare administrator account.
In the list of users, Control+click the user account name you want to change and select Advanced Options.
In the Account name field, type the name of the new home folder you created and select OK.
You can change the full name for your account at this time, as well, but the account name and user folder name must match.
Close all open windows and dialog boxes and restart your Mac.
Sign in to the account you renamed and verify that you can see and access all your files and folders.
If you can’t sign in to the renamed account or can sign in but can’t access your home folder, the account name and home folder name probably don’t match. Sign out of the renamed account, sign in to the spare administrator account, then repeat this procedure. You may need to restart your Mac again.
Your Mac User Account
Each macOS user account contains information related to your name and primary directory:
- Full name: This is your full name (for example, Casey Cat). It can also be the name you use to sign in to your Mac.
- Account name: The account name is a shortened version of your full name (for example, caseycat). macOS suggests an account name based on the full name you enter, but you can use any name you want.
- Home directory: The home folder name and the account name are the same. By default, the home folder is in the Users directory of your startup disk, but you can relocate the home folder to anywhere you wish.
macOS has come a long way from the days when typos in account names were something you had to live with unless you were willing to look up Mac terminal commands to correct the mistake. Account management is now easy, and you’ll feel like a pro.

How to Change Full Name of a User Account on Mac
When you setup a Mac or create a new Mac user account, you’ll be asked for a full name during the setup process, and that full name gets associated with the user account. But what if you want to change the full name associated with a user account in Mac OS? Perhaps you had a name change, or want to correct a typo in the full account name, and you want the Mac user account full name to reflect the adjustment.
This tutorial will show you how to change the full name associated with any user account in Mac OS. For example, if a user account name is set to “John Doe” but you want to change it to “Sir John Doe III”, these are the steps you’d want to take. You can change the full name of any user account on a Mac as long as you have admin access of the computer.
Remember, this aims to change the full name associated with a Mac user account only. It is not attempting to change an account name, home directory, short name, or any other user account details.
Be forewarned that changing an account name can lead to problems with logins, keychain data, saved network logins, since the associated full name will no longer be the same, and thus attempting to login or use the old full name will no longer work. This is not a process to take lightly. It is essential that you thoroughly backup the Mac before editing user account details, otherwise the user account and any related data or files could be damaged or lost irretrievably.
How to Change the Full Name Associated with a User Account in Mac OS
Important: back up the Mac before beginning the process of editing user account name details. Editing user account details could lead to problems with the user account being modified. Do not proceed without a complete backup made with Time Machine or your backup method of choice.
- Backup the Mac before beginning, do not skip a backup otherwise you may ruin your user account
- Pull down the Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
Choose “Users & Groups” from the system preference options
Click the lock icon in the lower right corner to authenticate and unlock the preference panel
At the Advanced Options screen, locate “Full Name” and replace the name in the Full Name field with the new name you’d like to use on the user account
When satisfied with the change to the full name field, click “OK” to set the change of the user account full name *
In the screenshot examples here, we changed an account user full name from “OSXDaily” to “OSXDaily.com Example Name”, because the name is long it becomes truncated in the Users & Groups preference panel.
* Do not make any other changes or edit any other fields in the advanced user account options. One wrong change could make the account completely useless and lead to major problems.
The advanced user account options allow for many other changes to be made, though all should be limited to advanced users only with compelling reasons to make those changes, and a thorough understanding of the risks involved (there’s a reason Apple puts a giant red warning on the top of this preference panel setting screen, it is remarkably simple to render a user account useless if you are not 100% certain in what you are doing). We’ve covered many of these advanced user account topics before, including changing user account short names in Mac OS, changing the user home directory in Mac OS, or even moving a home directory to another location.
It’s worth mentioning that changing a user account full name should only be used for making minor changes to the literal full name of a user account (“Jane R Doe” to “Jane Doe”, etc) and this should absolutely not be used to rebrand an existing user account for someone else. If you want to have an account for an entirely different person, simply make a new user account on the Mac instead.
The approach detailed here applies to modern versions of MacOS and Mac OS X. Much older versions of Mac OS X allowed users to edit the full name simply by clicking on the users full name within the generic Users preference panel view, but now it has been relocated to the advanced section.
And by the way, this does not change the name of the actual computer itself, which is the name that appears on a network. You can change the Mac computer name with these instructions if need be.
