How to create a macOS 12 Monterey installer on an external drive

Update: The guide has been updated to reflect name changes in the Monterey beta application. Please note, there is a bug in the beta 7 installer application which prevents it from making an installer correctly. Use beta 8 or later instead.

This tutorial goes through the process of creating an install drive from the newly-released macOS Monterey beta application. Having an external drive allows you to install the OS to multiple computers without re-downloading it, perform clean installs instead of initiating them from within an existing OS, and boot to the installer’s built-in recovery for troubleshooting tools.

To get started you’ll need the Install macOS Monterey beta application and an external storage drive of 16GB or larger. A USB stick is usually best for this, but you could also use an SD card (if your Mac has an SD card slot), a partition on a larger external hard drive, or another kind of external storage drive. Note: macOS Monterey is currently in beta. This guide currently describes the installer creation process for the beta installer, and will be updated for the normal Mac App Store release in the future, when it becomes available. As usual, all beta testing is at your own risk. Do not install beta operating systems to work-critical machines, especially without making full backups first.

How to create a macOS Monterey beta installer

1) Download a copy of the Install macOS Monterey beta application. Users with a paid Apple Developer account can download the Beta Access Utility from the downloads section of their Apple Developer account page. Once installed, open System Preferences, Software Update to view and download the beta. Other users can join the Public Beta for free, and will receive beta releases on a slightly delayed schedule. Public Beta users will be provided with a slightly different version of the Beta Access Utility. Once installed, open System Preferences, Software Update to view and download the beta.

2) When your download has completed, your Mac will launch the macOS 12 installer app. We do not want to install it now, so quit it, open your /Applications folder and locate the installer in there. Don’t rename it or move it out of /Applications.

3) Format your >=16GB drive to GUID Partition Map and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Disk Utility. This guide explains how, if you are not familiar with the method. Note: All data on the external drive will be erased.

4) Name the newly formatted drive USB, for ease.

5) Next, launch the Terminal application and paste in this command:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey\ beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia —volume /Volumes/USB —nointeraction

  • Remove “–nointeraction” from the command to be asked for confirmation before erasing the external drive.
  • The “–downloadassets” flag was introduced with macOS Mojave. It supposedly downloads on-demand assets which may be required during installation. This is presumably helpful for offline installations, though I’ve never noticed any difference in online or offline installations when using it. I wouldn’t bother with it, but add it if you like.
  • Older versions of macOS used an “–applicationpath” flag in this command, but this is now deprecated and will cause an error if used. Use the command we have provided above, instead of referring to guides which were written for previous versions of macOS.

6) Press Enter to issue the command, and enter your password when prompted.

Terminal will provide readout of the external drive being erased, and of the installer files being copied onto it. When Terminal declares that the drive has been successfully created, look for it on your desktop under Install macOS Monterey beta.

How to use the macOS Monterey beta installer

1) Shut down the computer you wish to install the beta on, and insert the USB drive.

3) The Startup Manager will show a list of bootable drives. Select Install macOS Monterey beta to boot from the installer.

4) You can now continue to install as you like. The installer also allows you to reformat connected drives, and access tools such as Terminal, Startup Disk, and Firmware Password Utility. Have fun testing Apple’s newest version of macOS! Remember: back up your data before upgrading to a new OS, particularly a beta one. Your drive can be used to troubleshoot your Mac if it becomes corrupted and can’t boot from its own Recovery partition. Being able to reinstall your operating system or open a Terminal session from the external drive is also extremely useful in a pinch. I mainly use these drives to install macOS to multiple computers without having to re-download the installer onto each one, saving time and data. How to Stop Getting MacOS Beta Software Updates via App Store

Want to leave the MacOS beta program and stop getting beta software updates on a Mac? This is a fairly common occurrence for many Mac users who either initially joined a beta and then later downgraded, Mac users who had beta software but now want to be on the regular stable software update channel, or even for those who were curious about installing macOS Mojave public beta but decided against it.

If you have run the MacOS beta access utility then a macOS beta profile is installed on the Mac, meaning the Mac will continue to get beta software updates pushed to it until that has been changed.

This guide will show you how to change your Mac settings so that the computer stops getting MacOS beta system software updates.

Note: this is for older Macs running earlier versions of Mac OS system software delivered through App Store. If you are using MacOS Catalina 10.15 or later, go here to opt out of macOS beta system software updates from System Preferences instead.

Note that stopping the MacOS beta software updates from appearing on the Mac is not the same as downgrading. Stopping beta software updates from appearing on the Mac does not remove any software, nor does it remove the beta software, or downgrade to a different operating system. If you’d like to downgrade from macOS Mojave beta you can learn how to do that here.

How to Leave the MacOS Beta & Stop Getting Beta Software Updates in Mac App Store

Decided you want to leave the MacOS beta and stop getting MacOS beta software updates? Here is what you need to do to change the software update settings:

  1. Go to the  Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”
  2. Select “App Store” from the preference options
  3. Look for the section of App Store preferences that says “Your computer is set to receive beta software updates” and then click on the “Change” button

At the pop-up screen, click on “Do Not Show Beta Software Updates”

After you have made this change, future beta updates to MacOS system software will no longer appear on the Mac, and instead only final builds of MacOS system software will appear as software updates.

Note this setting option will not be visible by default on a Mac unless the beta profile was installed to begin with, either through the public beta or developer beta testing programs for Mac OS.

As mentioned before but it’s important to reiterate; stopping beta software from showing up on the Mac does not remove the beta software. It does not revert the software version or anything else, for that you would need to manually downgrade from macOS Mojave beta to revert to a prior MacOS release preserved from a backup.

How to Change Back to Receive Beta MacOS Software Updates Again

You can reverse course if you’d like and then opt to receive beta updates again if you decide to do so.

If you have already chose to stop receiving beta software updates, you will need to run through the MacOS Beta Software Access Utility again, either downloaded from the Apple Developer Center or the Apple Public Beta enrollment site.

Running the MacOS Beta Access Utility will reinstall the macOS beta profile and allow beta updates to arrive again, either through the Mac App Store, or the Software Update system preference panel, depending on the version of MacOS.

Beta Software

Beta software, including previews and seeds, refers to a prerelease version of software that is not public and is still under development. As a developer, you can use beta software to start integrating the latest Apple technologies into your apps so that your apps are up to date once the software becomes available to the public.

Download

Xcode

Beta versions of Xcode include the latest toolset and SDKs for creating apps that run on upcoming releases of an operating system. Xcode betas are available to all developers on the download page. Apple Developer Program membership is not required.

Operating systems

The latest operating system releases for Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, and Apple TV are available on the download page. To download, you’ll need to sign in with your Apple ID associated with your Apple Developer Program membership.

Safari

Anyone can download the latest release of Safari Technology Preview to see upcoming web technologies in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Back up

iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Before you install beta software, back up your device in iTunes, then archive the backup. You won’t be able to use an iCloud backup or one you didn’t archive if you need to go back to the current version of an operating system. To get a shipping release of a device, you can simply install the final version of the software you’re testing when it appears in Software Update. If you need to reinstall a previously released version, you can restore your device from your previously saved iTunes backup.

Always back up your Mac computer before installing beta software. To get a public release of macOS on your Mac, you can simply install the final version of the software you’re testing when it appears in the Mac App Store. If you need to go back to a previously released version, you must first erase the beta software, then reinstall the latest public version of macOS, and finally restore from your Time Machine backup.

Install

Beta operating system software should be installed only on devices and systems used for development and testing. Attempting to install beta software in an unauthorized manner violates Apple policy and could render your device unusable. Make sure to install on devices and systems that you’re prepared to erase if necessary.

Develop and test

Documentation

Documentation provided by Apple may contain preliminary information about a beta version of an API or technology in development. This information is subject to change, and your software implemented according to this documentation should be tested with final operating system software. For the most up-to-date information, be sure to read the release notes for the version of software that you’re using.

Apple Developer Forums

You can also find information or post about issues you encounter with your app’s code on the Apple Developer Forums.

TestFlight

You can use TestFlight in App Store Connect to invite users to test your app running on a beta release of iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS. TestFlight makes it simple to invite testers using just their email address and lets beta testers easily provide valuable feedback within the TestFlight app.

For information and best practices on testing with beta software, see Testing your app on beta OS releases.

Providing feedback

Feedback Assistant

If you encounter any problems with beta software or if you’d like to request enhancements to frameworks or API, please submit a report through Feedback Assistant. Make sure to include the build number in the bug title and description so your issue can be processed quickly.

Apple Beta Software Program

The iOS, iPadOS, and macOS public betas available through the Apple Beta Software Program come with the built-in Feedback Assistant app. If you’re running the tvOS public beta, you can submit feedback through the Feedback Assistant app on an enrolled iOS or iPadOS device. When you experience an issue or something doesn’t work as expected, send your feedback directly to Apple with Feedback Assistant.

Submitting apps

Apps that are created using beta versions of Xcode or that are built for beta versions of an operating system will not be accepted on the App Store. Apps that you submit should be developed using the most up-to-date version of Xcode from the Mac App Store and should be built for publicly available versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS — except when GM seeds are available. When a Release Candidate of Xcode becomes available, use it to develop your app for submission. When GM seeds of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, or tvOS become available, build your app for these versions.

Feedback Assistant

Submit bug reports and request enhancements to APIs and developer tools.
